What are your associations when you hear the term "class struggle"? It is probably an educated guess that a lot of history will pop up, including that of the socialist and trade union movements and even that of Marxism and Communism. Can I invite you to widen the perspective and, as I would see it, to look at what goes really on in a lot of western societies, particularly that of the UK? What is happening here can indeed be described as class struggle, but it is not that coming from below. It is class struggle from above. It is the people of wealth who are using the political and legal systems of the modern state in order to gratify themselves and exclude the large majority from the benefits of their own work. Profits are invested wherever the most lucrative gains can be made, and this means that capital is being exported, not re-invested at home. Tax avoidance is another characteristic of class struggle from above, I probably don't need to go into details. You must also have noticed that over the last three decades work has become cheap. A generation ago, one earner (usually the husband) was able to sustain the life of a family, today, you would need two earners to do the same. And the jobs they would be having would be insecure too. In the UK, as in France as well, there is opposition to this process of continuously eroding the people's access to life's opportunities. In Britain, people are on strike for a very good reason. The Korail Class 8200, based on the Siemens EuroSprinter ES 64 F platform and built by Hyundai Rotem between 2002 and 2008, is a Bo′Bo′ electric locomotive. It delivers 5 200 kW of power and runs at a maximum service speed of 150 km/h (theoretically capable of 220 km/h if re-geared).

Introduced to replace the older EL 8100 units, it hauls medium-distance passenger services—especially third-tier Mugunghwa-ho trains—on fully electrified routes such as Gyeongbu, Honam, Jungang, Taebaek and Yeongdong. Equipped with Head-End Power (HEP), each unit can feed up to 12 passenger cars without extra generators.

For regional and intercity duties, it uses four 1 300 kW traction motors, electronically controlled air and regenerative brakes, and on-board ATS/ATP safety systems. When a train formation exceeds five cars, a dedicated dynamo car is sometimes coupled to guarantee auxiliary power for lighting, HVAC and other systems. Across its production run of 83 units (8201–8283), the Class 8200 remains a workhorse on Korea’s electrified mainlines, underpinning the “slow-trainMugunghwa-ho service.

An absolutely mega slide...

A new addition to the (reducing in size) collection I received today: Class 24 no.5114 seen entering Invergordon on 10/08/72 with the 10:50 Inverness-Wick and Thurso, a shot taken around 3 weeks after I'd been born... And I'd say the slide has survived the years the better of the two of us !

The 24 had around 2 months left in traffic before withdrawal.

Just playing at photography evening class. this one is a crystal globe in front of a background I printed off the web. It's one of a series I took this week. I had great fun. I think I may try a different lens in future, to try and get the background in sharp focus as well as the lens ball. We shall see....
