The City Theater Meran was designed by the Munich architect Martin Dülfer and opened in 1900.
History
In order to make Merano more attractive as a health resort, since 1884 a theater-building committee was founded to build a representative theater. After the clarification of financing and location issues a competition was advertised, which won the Munich architect Martin Dülfer. The execution was done by Pietro Delugan. The construction costs amounted to 240,000 guilders.
The opening took place on 1 December 1900. Among the guests was also Hermann Sudermann. Until 1915 more than 200 performances took place per season. Due to the war, the theater was closed that year.
After the end of the First World War, the tourists stayed out, only in the 1920s, the theater reopened. In 1937, the Municipal Theater was renamed Teatro Puccini as part of the Italianization of fascism. In the same year Riccardo Zandonai conducted his opera Francesca da Rimini.
In the 1960s, the theater was used as a cinema. After a fire, the city council decided to renovate the theater. The original external appearance was to be preserved, in the interior were in particular the stage technology and the seating to renew. The meanwhile destroyed putti groups on the façade made by Georg Schreyögg have been replaced by replicas.
The reopening took place in 1978 and in 1980 the theater was listed as a historical monument.
Since 1993, the management lies with the Merano Stadttheater- and Kurhausverein. From the historical fund a costume rental is offered.
Das vom Münchener Architekten Martin Dülfer im Jugendstil entworfene Stadttheater Meran wurde 1900 eröffnet.
Geschichte
