Dr. Jeffrey Siegel, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin displays equations relating to the ideal gas law in office.

Dr. Siegel recently received the Early Career Award from the International Society of Exposure Analysis to research the efficacy of particle removal in ion air purification devices.

His research interests include design of energy-efficient buildings, indoor air quality, and indoor particle dynamics. He is currently interested in resuspension of particles from building surfaces, protecting buildings.

Historic Hays Street Bridge in San Antonio, Texas. The bridge carries Hays Street over the Union Pacific Railroad (originally the Galveston, Harrisburg & San Antonio Railway (GH&SA)), N. Cherry Street, and Chestnut Street. It has two wrought iron main spans - a Whipple through truss span and a Pratt through truss span. The Whipple span was fabricated by the Phoenix Bridge Company and has their patented Phoenix columns. The spans were relocated from an 1881 GH&SA railroad bridge over the Nueces River to their current location in the early 1900s.

The bridge was repaired in 1910 and widened from 16 ft to 25 ft. It was closed to traffic in 1982 and was unused for decades. The bridge was rehabilitated and all approach spans and piers replaced in 2010 and reopened as a pedestrian and bicycle bridge.

The Hays Street Bridge was designated as a Texas Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the Texas Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 2001. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012 (NRHP No. 12000787).

Yi Bao, Manager of the Advanced Civil Engineering - Materials Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan's College of Engineering, begins construction on the world's first concrete "Lego" inspired footbridge inside the Structures Lab on North Campus in Ann Arbor, MI. on May 22, 2019.

This prototype bridge is made up of 31 interlocking blocks secured with nuts and bolts for quick assembly. The blocks themselves are made of Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC), or "bendable concrete", which is more ductile and more durable than traditional concrete.

The footbridge is designed for total reuse. The blocks can be easily disassembled and reassembled into a new configuration, rather than being discarded. Just like Lego bricks, they can be used again and again to create new structures as needs change.

The famous civil engineering, general contractor, and author got his start at Dartmouth College enrolled in the Class of 1946. Due to the outbreak of World War II, he began his studies in the summer of 1942. The following year he enlisted in the Navy V-12 program at Dartmouth, continued his studies while on active duty, and received the BS degree, summa cum laude in November 1944. He took graduate courses at Dartmouth’s Thayer School of Engineering until February 1945 when he was sent to the Civil Engineer Corps officers training school.

I was assigned a group shot of the Civil Engineering Dept. here at Missouri S&T by my editor at the yearbook. Instead of the typical, boring, ambient-lit group photo, I decided to spice it up a little bit. There are a couple things I wish I'd done differently, but a group this large gets fairly impatient fairly quickly, so all-in-all i'm happy with the results.

Lowry Hall, the civil engineering building at Clemson University, on a bright February afternoon.

"Constructed in 1957-58 as the Structural Science Building, the modernist Lee/Lowry complex now is considered two buildings connected by a covered breezeway. With his design, the late architect and educator Harlan McClure dropped on South Carolina soil the first really good example of modern architecture in the International Style."
