Historic 1939 San Jacinto Monument on the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site in Harris County, Texas. Fought on April 21, 1836, the Battle of San Jacinto was the final battle of the Texas Revolution. The San Jacinto Monument memorializes those who fought during the Texas Revolution. The monument is an Art Moderne style octagonal reinforced concrete column, faced with Texas limestone. It stands 567.31 feet tall and is the tallest monument column in the world. The exterior of the base is decorated with eight engraved panels depicting the history of Texas and a 34-foot star sits atop the monument and the interior contains a museum and theater.
The State of Texas undertook a number of projects to celebrate the 1936 Texas Centennial including the construction of exposition complexes, historic restorations, park improvements, museums, community centers, statues, monuments and historical markers around the State. The San Jacinto Monument is the largest of the 45 monuments erected between 1936 and 1939. In addition to funds from the State of Texas, the San Jacinto Monument received funding from the New Deal Works Progress Administration (WPA).
The San Jacinto Battlefield was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 (NRHP No. 66000815).
