Hosted by the UW Libraries Research Commons and The Graduate School, Scholars’ Studio is designed to connect new scholars to members of the UW research community who share common passions and research goals. Each Scholars’ Studio will feature a theme that aims to attract graduate students and faculty across disciplines. Each event will feature a series of fast-aced lightning talks that will give students the opportunity to share research informally and get feedback. In Autumn Quarter 2012, our theme is “Citizen”. An army of citizen scientists has helped the professionals understand how a tiny ‘alien’ moth is attacking the UK’s conker (horse-chestnut) trees, and showed that naturally-occurring pest controlling wasps are not able to restrict the moth’s impact.

this is research being carried out by CSI Gowanus (Creek Scene Investigation) on the characteristics and history of a buried stream called Vechte's Brook. Vechte's Brook flows into the Gowanus Canal via the 4th Street Basin under the Third Avenue Bridge. It's landfilling from the 1870s onwards led to the flooding problems experienced by 4th Avenue residents. Much of the water that connected with this stream has now been diverted into the City's combined sewer system, causing sewage overflows into the Canal.

When the moon came out, the crabs were attracted to our feet (thinking they were also crabs). It got very dense very quickly.
