All around is just plastic and plastic. A huge pile of plastic bottles and garbage in thousands of colors—white, green, blue, red. This picture highlights a harsh reality of our modern life. Where does the amount of plastic we use and throw away every day end up? When we try to find the answer to this question, we find that some people are working, risking their lives, amidst such mountains of waste.

“B1NR” by DICTO is an innovative, open-source “binary” sculpture system created by the Osaka-based sculptor, using just two standardized components—PET bottle security rings as multi-notch nodes and nylon zip ties as tensioned connectors—to build complex geometric structures from everyday waste.

“Binary:1-Nil-Repeat” (B1NR) draws its name directly from binary code, where bottle rings form sleek zeros (0)—circular voids of pure geometry—and ties serve as ones (1)—straight, commercially available recycled zip ties that bind them. This visual duality simplifies assembly into repeating polyhedral modules from recycled PET bottles, embodying Buckminster Fuller's ephemeralization: achieving "more and more with less and less until eventually you can do everything with nothing." These zero-one-nil forms create lightweight, tool-free sculptures that scale from handheld orbs to public installations.[1][2]

This has all the appearance of an authentic Irish Cottage on the beautiful Silver Strand at Dugort on Achill Island. While most of house around here are either new or renovated this look untouched. What is striking is the use of an old microwave placed in the wall as a postbox. While there is a lot of modern talk of The Circular Economy here is an example of how older people recycle without even thinking.

West Woods is an absolutely unique forest not far from Avebury. The recent publications show clearly that it was indeed the original place where the large stones for Stonhenge were taken from. Most likely the ancient creators used the river Avon to transport the large stones from the forest to the Stonehenge.

Processing cassava for starch. The hardy root crop cassava is among important staples for food security and income in Southeast Asia, but neglected in terms of investment for scientific research. In January, the World Congress on Root and Tuber Crops in China, Nanning, will place these crops -sweet potato, cassava, yam, taro- center-stage, gathering researchers from Asia, Africa and South America to discuss opportunities and challenges ahead for these vital crops.
