Another secretive bittern that I was lucky enough to capture in flight.

Maslog, Negros Island, Philippines

Taken in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

A little grainy but it was very early on a frosty morning that I found this beauty preparing to nap in the coming sunlight. This is a duck not commonly found in our area, especially in the winter.

286) Cinnamon Bittern

Cinnamon Bittern, Chestnut bittern, Ixobrychus cinnamomeus, Puchong Bendang

This is a small species at 38 cm length, though it is one of the larger Ixobrychus bitterns. Possessing a short neck and longish bill, the male is uniformly cinnamon above and buff below. The female is similar but her back and crown are brown, and the juvenile is like the female but heavily streaked brown below. When surprised on its nest or concerned, it assumes the characteristic attitude of bitterns, termed the on-guard. The neck is stretched perpendicularly, bill pointing skyward, while the bird freezes and becomes very hard to see among the surrounding reeds. This bittern breeds in reed beds, nesting on platforms of reeds in shrubs. Four to six eggs are laid. The species can be difficult to see, given their skulking lifestyle and reed bed habitat, but tend to emerge at dusk, when they can be seen creeping almost cat-like in search of frogs. Cinnamon bitterns feed on insects, fish and amphibians.

Cinnamon Teal doing the old one-legged stand. Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Utah.

Cinnamon was next to me so Cocoa jumped onto the back of the couch and balanced on my shoulder for a bit. She eventually climbed on me down to my lap then squeezed into the one inch space between my leg & Cinnamon.

At the Fernhill Wetlands.

From our parks exploration base in Rapid City, South Dakota, it's a short ten-hour drive to Brigham City, Utah. Brigham City was our new base for exploring nearby Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, where Cinnamon Teals are plentiful. They're generally pretty skittish though, so photo ops are less plentiful. Persistence and patience allowed me to get this shot.

Candid eye contact street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. Just a guess but cinnamon would definitely go with the colour scheme here. A colour re-edit of a shot captured in January 2019. Enjoy!

Pups are 7 weeks already! Here is Cinnamon posing for me. Such a cutie pie, I think he might just keep those big blue eyes.

I shot this in "The Garden" at my hotel, Rio Pardido, where they grow herbs and vegetable for the excellent restaurant. This is my first ever cinnamon hummingbirds, one of several "firsts" that I expect during my short stay in Costa Rica. I'm getting other birds and animals, but hummingbirds are my main objective.

I've just cleared out my spice cupboard and got rid of some out of date jars, luckily these cinnamon sticks hadn't hit the bin yet!

Cinnamon Teals are a rarity in Central Florida. This one seems to winter every year in MINWR. I found it again in the same spot along the Wild Birds Unlimited Trail that begins at stop 4 on the BPWD. It likes to hang out there with the other ducks. The birds were so harshly back lit that I had trouble seeing colors to ID it. I’m pretty amazed at how well this photo turned out.

I found this interesting insect on one of our lupin plants in the garden the other. Turns out it's a cinnamon bug (or black and red squash bug) and it was quite happy to pose for photos
