Churfürsten is a mountain range in the Canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. They form the natural boundary between the canton's Toggenburg and Sarganserland districts. They are the southernmost range of the Appenzell Alps, separated from the Glarus Alps by the Seez river and Walensee.

View over the Churfirsten and the Walensee in Kanton St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Chäserrugg (2'260 meters) is one of the summits belonging to the Churfirsten mountain range. The hut at the top was designed by Herzog and de Meuron. The Walenstadt valley can be seen to the right.

The Gamserrugg (right) is a stunning geological formation in the Toggenburg. Captured from the Chäserrugg we can also see the Alpstein mountain range in the background.

The simplest way to access this area is to go to Unterwasser which is located in the valley below. From there you need to take first a funicular that will take you to Iltios. The second leg is through a cable car that will take you to the summit at Chäserrugg.

Once you are at the top the view is breathaking on all sides. This photo is looking north.

The Seeztal valley seen from the top of the Churfirsten. In the valley we can see the cities of Walenstadt close to the lake and Flums farther away. To give a glimpse of the scale of the image, the valley lies about 1'850 m below the cross. A long journey down.

Lake Walen (Walensee) in eastern Switzerland links the two cantons of St. Gallen and Glarus and forms the western end of the holiday region known as “Heidiland”, after Johanna Spyri’s world-famous Heidi story. On the northern side, the Churfirsten mountain chain rises nearly vertically out of the water. On the other side of the lake is the popular winter sports and hiking region of the Flumserberg.

If you get up early in Switzerland, you can experience the alpenglow when the sun rises...The sun began to rise, the sky turned pink, and I took the first photo. I waited and took four pictures in total. This is the third one—unfortunately, the rocks didn't get any redder—but I'm quite satisfied.
