The builder Pietro Francesco Carlone was commissioned by the Jesuits of Passau to build a new church.

The Jesuit College in Passau was completed in 1612. After the Thirty Years' War, the building of the church began. But in 1662 a city fire destroyed the Jesuit college and the building of the church came to a standstill. The structure of the college has priority. The Jesuits also quarrel with the Passau prince-bishop Wenzeslaus Graf von Thun. In 1664 the dispute was settled and the building of the church could continue. Construction was completed in 1676 and the consecration took place in 1677. The magnificent stucco is by Giovanni Battista Carlone. The interior decoration continues until 1720, so the six side altars date from 1678, the high altar, a work by Jakob Pawanger, is erected in 1712. The pulpit was made between 1715 and 1720. Ludwig Eisenbarth Orgelbau built the organ in 1973.

St Andrew's Church is a church within a church. It is a partly redundant grade 1 listed Anglican church in the hamlet of Covehithe in the county of Suffolk.

The oldest surrounding fabric of medieval church dates from the 14th century, although most of it is from the 15th century. A newer small church has been built at the west end of the 17th-century church against the tower. Amazing place

Dorfen in the Isental, a community in the Upper Bavarian district of Erding, was once home to the second largest Marian pilgrimage in Bavaria.

In the High Middle Ages, a chapel dedicated to Mary stood on the current site, which was replaced by a late Gothic church between 1400 and 1470.

Pilgrimages are definitely documented from 1632 onwards, but there may have been pilgrimages before that, but records of them were lost in the chaos of the Thirty Years' War.

The flow of pilgrims increased continuously after the miraculous power of the image of Mary was confirmed in 1707.

In order to cope with the large number of pilgrims, a larger number of priests were also required. Between 1717 and 1719, a priest's house was built in the west, which housed part of the Freising seminary between 1775 and 1803. In 1785, for example, 58,000 pilgrims received communion.

In 1782, the nave collapsed and was rebuilt by Mathias Rösler in the early classicist style, incorporating the late Gothic choir and tower substructure.

After secularization in 1803, the flow of pilgrims dwindled sharply, and in 1813 Dorfen became an independent parish.

The ceiling frescoes were painted by Johann Huber in 1786. The high altar is a replica of the late Baroque altar designed by Egid Quirin Asam in 1728 and erected in 1740/49. This Asam altar was replaced by a neo-Romanesque altar in 1868. From 1963 to 1971, the Asam altar was reconstructed as part of the church renovation.

The church of St Mary's in East Bergholt, Suffolk will forever be associated with the painter John Constable. This is the very heart of Constable Country, and the artist grew up here in the village, a short stroll from the church. Constable painted the church on numerous occasions, and his paintings provide a fascinating glimpse at this historic building in centuries past.

The smallest church still in use in the county of Lincolnshire. It has 17th century altar rails in a barley sugar twist style and a medieval tub font.

These are the front doors of the Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and its church in Lisbon, Portugal which is a former Catholic convent located in the civil parish of Santa Maria Maior.

The medieval convent was ruined during the sequence of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and the destroyed Gothic Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on the southern facade of the convent is the main trace of the great earthquake still visible in the old city.

At the time of the earthquake, it was the largest church in Lisbon, but today the roofless nave open to the sky is all that remains of the arches and rubble that caved in on the congregation as they were attending mass.

Let There Be Light.

This picture taken on my travels of Turkey in 1995 of the central #dome of St. Sophia in #Trabzon. The church was converted to a mosque in 1461 by the sultan Mehmet. In accordance with Islamic law mages are not permitted in places of worship so the fresco's faces were erased and the walls whitewashed. From a google search I understand the church is a place of Islamic worship From July 2013 and the frescos have been protected and covered.

To call Los Cerrillos a town is a bit of a stretch as it is a small grid of 4 streets by 3 streets, but it is home to this Catholic church from 1922 (replacing the original built in 1884).

Los Cerrillos, NM

The present St Mary's Church is located in the centre of the small village of Clophill, between Bedford and Luton in the South Midlands of England. The new church, built in 1848, replaced the old church by order of the Church Commissioners in 1850. The old church building, formally The Church of St Mary The Virgin (shortened to The Church of St Mary) and known colloquially as Old St Mary's or The Old Parish Church, is at the edge of the village, and is estimated to be around 650 years old.
