Day 4 - Paris - from Notre Dame Cathedral

A stunning stained-glass memorial at Southwell Minster honours local people who have lost their lives in conflicts since the First World War. Designed by artist Nicholas Mynheer, the window was unveiled at a special service on 10th July, commemorating the sacrifices made by members of the Southwell community.

Commissioned by the Dean of Southwell in 2014, the project was made possible through funding from the Royal British Legion, army regiment associations, and private benefactors. The window features moving depictions of soldiers in the trenches alongside those left behind, working tirelessly and caring for their families.

This beautiful and poignant artwork serves as a powerful reminder of the cost of war and the enduring resilience of those it touches.

Liverpool 201222 #4 Liverpool’s Roman Catholic Cathedral.

My final set of shots from Liverpool’s Roman Catholic cathedral are of its beautiful circular worship area and central altar. The design is a response to the Liturgical Constitution of the Second Vatican Council which had called for a closer and more active connection between the congregation and the celebrations at the altar.

One image that I took especially for today was that of the ‘Little Town of Bethlehem’ nativity scene in one of the chapels built into the cathedral’s buttresses.

It was built in 1855 at the Delp burial ground. This church building reminds me of a Monopoly house. The building is no longer in use.

In the 20th century Chicago architecture giant Louis Sullivan only worked sporadically. The Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral located at 2521 North Leavitt in Chicago’s north side Ukranian Village neighborhood is one of those later commissions. Built in 1903 it is currently in need of extensive repairs.if you are interested in helping here is a site for more info. FriendsOfHolyTrinity.com

Village Krasnoye, Staritsa Raion, Tver Oblast, Russia

Manor owner Mark Fyodorovich Poltoratsky built this neo-gothic church. The church is essentially a copy of the 1780 Chesme Church near Saint Petersburg. The Krasnoye church was closed, gutted, and repurposed in the 1930s. Restoration started in 1979. Returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1999 (uncertain).

The ruins of the Poltoratsky manor house and the overgrown manor house park are nearby.

The temple in Idaho Falls was announced on March 3, 1937. The building was designed by the church board of temple architects: Edward O. Anderson, Georgious Y. Cannon, Ramm Hansen, John Fetzer, Hyrum Pope, Lorenzo Snow Young. The exterior of the temple was completed in September 1941 and the interior was expected to be completed the following year. However, with World War II shortages, it delayed the completion of the temple for four more years. In spite of delays, church president George Albert Smith dedicated the Idaho Falls Temple just one month after the war ended, on September 23, 1945. The temple was built on a 7-acre plot, has four ordinance rooms and nine sealing rooms, and has a total floor area of 92,177 square feet.

In March 2015, the temple closed for renovations that were expected to last 18 months. The renovations took nearly two years and following their completion, a public open house was held from April 22 through May 20, 2017. The temple was rededicated by Henry B. Eyring on June 4, 2017. -- Courtesy LDS and Wikipedia
