"Sunset Is Coming, but the Sunrise We'll See."
An old southern gospel hymn made famous by the Chuck Wagon Gang
I was loaded for bear at the World Championship Chuck Wagon Races in Clinton Arkansas a few years ago. I’m positioning myself for a shot at the riders in the Snowy River Race as they come up and out of the creek.
The 31st Annual World Championship Chuck Wagon Races are in Clinton Arkansas this weekend. Hope to get some more shots like this and to avoid flying horse s**t.

Nothing like a day at the World Championship Chuck Wagon Races in Clinton Arkansas, It's hot, dusty and smells like horse s*** but it really gets the blood pumping as the wagons and horses roll by.
Happy Slider Sunday
Another photo from the National Chuck Wagon Races in Clinton Arkansas. The vintage look gives me a feeling of simpler tImes with less stress and worries.
Alberta was so parched, we finally got a milllion dollar rain! Yeehaw! A little too late, won't save our hay crops, but I'm mighty thankful. Can you hear the thunder? I sure can! These chuck wagon horses got swagger, just like Dean Brody who sings this song...
Grant-Khors National Historic Site
When fur trapper and trading post manager Johnnie Grant transitioned to ranching and started pasturing cattle in the DeerLodge Valley of Montana in 1857, trail drives were essential to cattle ranching. The cattle had to be brought in, usually from Texas, moved from pasture to pasture with the seasons and taken to market, often back to a railhead. When Grant sold his ranch in 1866 to German born Conrad Khors, The ranch’s operations spread over about 10 million acres of open range not only in Western Montana but in eastern Montana, Wyoming Idaho, Colorado and Canada. Transient cowboys and trail drives were a major component of that operation.
Essential to a trail drive and to cowboys minding cattle on the open range was the chuckwagon and the cook who was the key to a contented trail crew. The cook was typically an older man and a former cowboy. Paid $50 a month, he drove the chuckwagon carrying the crew's food, equipment, and blankets to the next campsite. He pitched camp, prepared three meals, tended his wagon and mules, and provided medical assistance to injured crew. He was assisted by the horse wrangler, who was in charge of the horse herd, or remuda. Frequently the youngest, he earned about $25 a month.
.
"We're up in the morning ere breaking of day,
The chuck wagon's busy, the flapjack's in play.
The herd is a stir over hillside and vale,
With the night riders crowding them onto the trail."

The Chuck Wagon has been a West Colfax icon since 1959, when it arrived from New Jersey. Technically, Ken and I are playing loose with time and space again. We have set this piece in 1958, the only year Colorado plates featured a skier. We claim, "Artistic License".
Here, on a hill overlooking Colfax Avenue, the iconic metal diner form has been augmented by a giant cowboy cook. He has been directing folks to the place for almost 60 years now and he hasn't aged a bit. There is another location for Davies Chuck Wagon, in a more traditional style of restaurant architecture, a few miles from here. It also has a large cowboy out front but none of the neon lettering this fellow enjoys.
Naturally, we had lunch there before they closed for the day and left the place perfect for a shoot. I had a really nice rueben sandwich on marbled rye bread. Ken had the patty melt. It was Ken's first visit and only my third. The place was there when my family moved to Denver in 1965 but it took me 48 years before I sat down at the counter.
As the Motels that still line West Colfax have turned into flop houses and the neon signs have been torn down or left broken, the Chuck Wagon is still serving, still thriving.

Had a chance to get back to my "Cowboy" roots at the Annual World Championship Chuck Wagon Races in Clinton Arkansas a few weeks ago. Great action and beautiful horses.
Two horse power for our chuck wagon tour of Texas Longhorn tour at Leahton Park, Charters Towers, north Queensland.
One of the Chuck Wagons in the cook off along the Llano river. we ate good at this one., Chicken fried steak, potatoes, beans, roll, and peach cobbler. I viewed this photo in original size ( 8688 X 5792 ). The cowboy with the black hat who was cooking and where i was focusing the camera was very sharp you can see every spec of dust on his hat. I just love the 5DSR & EF- 24-105mm lens combination.
Chuck Wagon Sliced Bacon. Not many companies have a name like Stark Provision Company anymore. And not many products have this beautifully dated design. Keep an eye on that 'Bacon' font -- you'll see variations of it again.
This view shows the chuck wagon, feed lot, stallion barn and other sheds on the Grant Khors Ranch in Deer Lodge Montana. These out buildings are part of the Grant-Khors National Historic Site which is part of the National Park System..
This old Chuck Wagon was used during the pioneers moving west. This depicts the struggle the pioneers faced in the arid high plains desert of Utah.

This converted Citroen van could have been one of the exhibits, instead it was busy serving hungry customers all day…
Prepping images for my new website redesign and grouped these together. I think they look nice.

There were many unique scenes and characters at the National Chuck Wagon Championship Races in Clinton Arkansas this Labor Day Weekend. There were over 20,000 visitors from the Southwest. There were even some visitors from New Zealand.
It was over 90 degrees and dust was flying everywhere. I had to do some major sliding to get the dust out of the photo.

This young cowgirl was leading the Snowy River Race at the 31st Annual national Championship Chuck Wagon Races in Clinton Arkansas yesterday when her horse took a spill right in front of me. The horse and rider survived without injury.

1956 diner car and sign moved to this location about fifteen years ago from the Midwest, restored and turned into a popular local eatery. Princetown, New York.
The Chuck Wagon Diner stood on the corner of Neil and Springfield in downtown Champaign, Illinois from the 1950s until 1976 when it closed and its contents were auctioned off. The sign went into storage while the diner was moved to Villa Grove, Illinois. The diner moved again to downtown Urbana, Illinois in 1983 when it became the Elite Diner. The Elite closed in 2002 for a courthouse parking lot and somehow it moved to Detroit and then finally to Duanesburg, New York in 2009 where it was reunited with its sign and became the Chuck Wagon again. It's now (2015) under new ownership and the food was great (it's not in the busiest of traffic spots though).
