Crazy Tuesday: Seasonal sweets

Every year I bake cookies at Christmas time and these whipped shortbread cookies are always a hit. I share them with my friends and family and bring them to gatherings and my work pot luck lunch. They are always one of the first to go and never have any leftovers.

Thanks so much for your visit! HCT!

Christmas cookies

Thema der Woche bei Macro Mondays ist: #Tradition

I have been busy getting my Christmas baking done. Just a couple more types of treats to make and then I am done.

A cookie is a good start but I think maybe we need a couple glasses of boozy eggnog for the loud cheering? Hehe.

Two more nights and we are there! Merry Christmas!

Right? At least that is what I tell myself. Haha! Sort of like day drinking; a bloody mary is alright to have in the morning because its tomato juice......right? Hehe

We made our second batch of cookies, Peanut Butter kisses, Peanut Butter balls, and fudge. We packed them nicely in cute Christmas tins. We will give them to our family and friends to enjoy. A happy tradition we love doing together. :)

Macro Mondays: Perfect together

I have been doing a little Christmas baking (and eating!) these days. My reward for all of the shoveling this past week. :)

Thank you for your visit. HMM!

One of my favorites!!

Steve has been craving "fancy cookies" and he found a bakery in Denver that hit the mark, Gateaux Bakery. He gets his cookies and I get my photo, Win/Win. : )

A Little New Year Fairy Tale

Once upon a quiet holiday evening,

in a warm kitchen filled with soft lights and the scent of homemade cookies,

a little polar bear got lost.

He didn’t know much about directions,

but he knew exactly where the cookies were.

He loved all of grandma’s treats —

the creamy ones, the layered ones,

colorful cookies shaped like flowers and stars,

and especially the small biscuits he dipped into warm milk.

He ate slowly…

then a little faster…

and then just one more.

Until he gained a kilo, maybe two — or even three.

Just like many of us after Christmas and New Year.

Now his tummy aches a little,

and he cannot fall into his winter sleep.

Maybe he ate too many cookies.

Maybe the winter outside hasn’t truly arrived yet.

Or maybe — he simply feels too comfortable where he is.

Surrounded by warmth.

By gentle light.

By memories that feel like home.

And so the little bear stays awake,

while we quietly wish him — and ourselves —

A happy, healthy and gentle New Year.

Sweet, but not too sweet.

Warm, in the most human way.

u obliku cvijeća, srca i zvijezda,

a najviše one male keksiće koje je umakao u toplo mlijeko.

Jeo je polako… pa malo brže…

i onda još jedan…

i još jedan…

dok nije dobio kilu, dvije, a možda i tri.

a mi mu tiho poželimo:

Sretnu, zdravu i veselu Novu godinu.

Da bude slatka – ali ne previše.

I topla – baš onako domaća.

Today I baked some sugar cookies for Christmas and ohhh myyy they are sooo good.

Thanks for visiting...I hope you had a great Sunday!

We had an unexpected power outage today which lasted from about 10:30 am till 6:00 pm. I had other plans for today but had to change them around to accommodate what things I could do without having any power. Thankfully we have a generator which ran the necessary things for heat, water and the microwave which helped me by melting the chocolate to get these ginger molasses cookies decorated. I had baked them yesterday and was going to decorate them today anyways. I bake these every year for Christmas. They are soft and chewy and are a family favourite.

I was also able to get all of my Christmas wrapping done today which is another thing I was able to check off my to-do list and so I feel much better about getting that task out of the way.

Thanks for your visit! I hope everyone had a great day!

Diese Keksdose sollte für Luis und Bärbel reichen !

This cookie jar should be enough for Luis and Bärbel !

Today I baked the last of my Christmas cookies for this year. This is the first time I made Peanut Butter Blossoms, a peanut butter cookie that has a chocolate Hershey Kiss pressed into the center of it right after it comes out of the oven. They are good and will likely make an appearance in the years to come.

Thanks for visiting...I hope everyone had a great day.

4 of 25 Days of Christmas

It’s National Cookie Day. The day was founded in 1987 by Matt Nader of the San Francisco San Francisco area in California. Nader and his then wife, Lori, started the Blue Chip Company, based on Lori’s cookie recipes. Begun in March 1983 in a store front on San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf, the Blue Chip Company was especially known for white chocolate macadamia nut cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and the black and white cookie.

***About 90% of United States households consume on average of 300–350 cookies per person per year. What’s the most popular Christmas cookie? That varies from state to state, but most polls agree that the classic sugar cookies, peanut butter blossoms, and chocolate chip cookies are top favorites.

***The patron saint of bakers and cookie makers is the 16th century saint, Honroe. It’s unclear if he was once a baker, but when he was named Bishop of Amiens, France, a baker’s wooden paddle for removing bread from a hot oven was said to have been transformed into a fruit tree.

***The Benedictine mystic, Saint Hildegard of Bingen, is noted for her “cookies of joy”. Described as a proponent of healthy eating, she devised a cookie recipe which, she claimed “will reduce the bad humors, enrich the blood, and fortify the nerves.”

I finally got around to decorating the gingerbread cookies I baked the other day.

Thanks for your visit! I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Yesterday and again this evening...I've been told to keep out of the kitchen as the annual cookie festival has begun.

"Double mint, chocolate," by the way.

So many moons ago I worked with a wonderful woman named Dani. Her family was grown and she was in her golden years getting ready to retire. One Monday morning she told me she had spent the weekend cleaning out items that were just sitting and not being loved any more. She only had one child, a son, and had used the dishes throughout his childhood. He was married now and sadly his wife said she would never use them and didn't want them. Dani knew how much I loved Christmas and that my family was still young, so she asked me if I would like to have her Christmas dishes. Of course I was thrilled to receive them.

Here we are in 2021.........twenty nine years later. Dani is long gone, and a few dishes have been broken, but we still use her dishes at Christmas. They served her well and they have served us well.

I decided to take them down tonight so I could use them in a few pictures.

Some from the neighbours and some store bought

Part of the holiday displays at Foxwoods Casino in Ledyard, CT. We used to go to there for special occasions to eat at one of our favorite restaurants, Tuscany.

These Christmas cookies from a co-worker are 'nearly' too adorable to eat!

Only funny if you're a ten-year-old. Or me.

All my old timey faves....

Our Mom didn't do much baking and making of cookies ...but, she did do one of the fiddliest at Christmas. The thumbprint cookies with jam in the centre.

Dipping in egg white, rolling in crushed nuts, baking for a few minutes and re-making the indent, etc, etc... if you've ever made them, you know!!...but, honestly..they are the best tasting cookies. I, too, make them only once a year .....

Butter tarts, shortbread with a cherry on top for the festive, albeit old fashioned, look, and the triple chocolate cranberry cookies... mmmm... all so tasty it's difficult to give them away.

They are all destined for gift bags for the neighbours.. with the exception of the 'tasters' of course.... you know...the ones I have to taste to make sure they are what I expect of my own cookie making skills.. and, maybe the second one just to be sure, and then, a third.... whoa!! and, somewhere in between baking ... keeping up with my exercise routine... so I don't get a big surprise when I jump on the scales in January.

10 of 25 Days of Christmas.

We had the nieces over to bake cookies. They had a blast doing the cookie cut outs and then they were done. They ate their fill of cookies and then crashed on a big blanket by the fire. The Christmas tree was lit in the background and the cat cuddled in a ball with them. Make it a December to remember. :)

My husband and I had a successful afternoon of cookie baking. I say successful because last year this recipe (Chocolate Press Cookies) was a disaster—they steadfastly refused to be formed through our new cookie press. This year, I adjusted the recipe with ingredient amounts similar to another recipe (the one I made on Tuesday with my friend) and we were able to easily make, decorate and bake all these cookies.
