Chocolate Covered Cherries....these were my Momma's favourite candy at Christmas. Since she's been gone, I buy a box, eat one for her, and then throw the rest of them out after the holiday. They ooze pure sugar syrup creme....way too sweet.

Candy Cane
The fascinating story behind the candy cane ...
The birth, ministry, and death of
Jesus Christ are signified through
the elements of the candy cane ~
JESUS CHRIST is ....
our Good Shepherd (staff shape) ~ 1 Pt. 5:4
our Rock (hard candy) ~ 1 Cor. 10:4
our Sinless Savior (white) ~ 2 Cor. 5:21
our Sacrifical Lamb (red) ~ Eph. 1:7
The STRIPES symbolize pain inflicted upon
Jesus before his death on the cross and a bold
stripe to represent the blood he shed for
mankind. The three stripes can also represent
the power and presence of the Trinity
(the Father, Son and Holy Spirit).
The smell and taste of PEPPERMINT relate
to the herb hyssop. Psalm 51:7 states,
"Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean,
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow."
The candy cane is meant to be shared --
broken into pieces for all to share. That
reminds us of Jesus' words, "This is my body
which is broken for you" (1 Cor. 11:24).
What a sweet way to share the Gospel !

Legend has it that in 1670, the choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany handed out sugar sticks among his young singers to keep them quiet during the long Living Creche ceremony. In honor of the occasion, he had the candies bent into shepherds' crooks.
In 1847, a German-Swedish immigrant named August Imgard of Wooster, Ohio, decorated a small blue spruce with paper ornaments and candy canes. It wasn't until the turn of the century that the red and white stripes and peppermint flavors became the norm.
In Indiana, a candy maker wanted to make a candy that could be a reminder of Jesus Christ, so he made the Christmas candy cane. He started off with a stick of pure white hard candy. The white color symbolized the virgin birth and the sinless nature of Jesus, and the hard candy symbolized the solid rock which was the foundation of the church, and firmness of the promises of God.
The candy maker made the candy in the form of a J, which represented the name of Jesus and, when flipped upside down, the staff of the Good Shepherds who were the first to find out about His birth. He then stained it with three stripes which showed the scourging Jesus received, and symbolized the blood shed by Christ on the cross. When you break the cane, it reminds us that Jesus' body was broken for us.

I wanted to do this shot before Christmas, but since I was feeling puny it didn't happen.. Needless to say the candy is now all stuck together and only good for the trash. The bokeh is the lights on our tree. I was on my lowest F stop so only the red & white striped candy in the center is in focus.

Oh, we have been plagued by the stomach bug here so I am so far behind with Christmas preparations. I had so many visions of photos I wanted to take, but nothing has gotten done. Oh well, here is one photo of some ribbon candy...too pretty to eat in my opinion.

Back to the glow of the lights... and a little something sweet for the season. At no other time of the year are there near as many baked goods... chocolate... sweet things... salty things... special 'Christmas only' dishes and treats. And I guess that makes it all the more special.
For this shot... I can't tell you how many Kisses were just 'not right'... for one reason or another. So I promptly... uhhh... disposed of them... =) ... until I found exactly what I was looking for.
