At the Nageswaraswamy temple, Kumbakonam, Tamilnadu
These are some of the best representations of the art in the Early Chola temples (from 907-985). This temple is believed to have been constructed by Aditya Chola I and completed by Parantaka Chola I.
It amazes me how underrated the art in these temples are, compared to those in the much more famous Brihadeeswara temple (a century older than this one) at Thanjavur, a UNESCO world heritage site.

The ascent to the watershed Tro La pass, with an altitude of 4864 m, northeast of Derge (the Derge county capital), is precipitous and switchback, gradually rising above the tree line into a world of jagged snow mountains. There are magnificent views of the Dri chu འབྲི་ཆུ་ (Yangtze) gorge to the southwest. On the far side of Tro La, the landscape is totally different, the enclosed forested valleys giving way to rugged open grassland. The crossroads town of Manigango is located in the grassland, 110 km from Derge, and 41 km from Tro La pass.

Airavatesvara Temple built by Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century CE is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur, the Gangaikondacholisvaram Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram that are referred to as the Great Living Chola Temples.
This temple is a storehouse of art and architecture and has some exquisite stone carvings. Although this temple is much smaller than the Brihadeesvara Temple or the Gangaikondacholapuram Temple, it is more exquisite in detail.
The Airavatesvara temple was much larger than it is now. It had sapta veedhis (seven streets) and seven courts, similar to the Srirangam temple, according to the inscriptions. All are gone, except the one court with the main temple that survives.
Legend has it that the white elephant Airavata of God Indra lost its colour due to a curse by sage Durvasa . Airavata regained its colour after worshipping Lord Shiva in this temple and hence the deity was known as Airavatesvara.

Sun still dawns on the Cholas and their history which needs to be retold.
Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram was built by Rajendra Chola I, who ruled from 1012 to 1044 CE. He was considered to be the most significant ruler in early eleventh-century South Asia for his role in patronising the arts, encouraging trade, and expanding the Chola Empire to its greatest extent.
Gangaikonda Cholapuram literally means the town of the Chola who took over the Gangetic plains. Rajendra Chola decided to build a grand new capital city for his empire by anointing it with water from the Ganga, which was two thousand kilometres away from Thanjavur, the Cholas' then capital city.
In one of the most successful military expeditions in Indian history, the Cholas left Thanjavur, conquering every kingdom en route to modern-day Bangladesh, and returned triumphantly with the holy water from Ganga. The Cholas became an economic superpower by defeating kings along the route, who became Chola subordinates and trading partners.
Chola-Gangam, or Ponneri Lake as it is now known, is one of India's largest man-made lakes. It was built by Rajendra Chola, marking the victory of the mighty Cholas.
