As we passed through the tiny town called Virgin, Utah, we had to turn around and go back to a used book store (of course!) and found that it was a combo book store and the town post office in an old wooden building. The post mistress was the book store clerk and the postal service area was the pass through. As I shopped, she took care of customers in the post office.

NANAIMO — Children who to go to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) for surgery will have a much better idea of what to expect thanks to a new online photo tour created for young patients and their parents.
The narrated photo tour, available at www.vimeo.com/viha/surgery, provides a detailed look at the procedures for surgery — from arriving at hospital and checking in, to meeting the anesthesiologist and other members of the health care team, to a view of the operating room — described as looking like the inside of a spaceship.

When FDA approves a drug, we review the manufacturing processes to ensure that the drugs are of consistent quality and purity. That’s not the case with unapproved prescription ear drops. What’s especially worrisome is that some of these products are prescribed for young children and infants, the population most susceptible to ear infections. It’s very basic—drugs that are used in children should be tested in children. But these products haven’t been shown to be effective in anyone, and there’s no proof that they work. Island Health invests in tobacco prevention and control programs, some of which focus on reaching youth and teens.
Peer behaviour is one of the most the most powerful predictors of a teen’s choices and actions so peer role-models can be powerful motivators.
The best way to stop smoking is not to start and in order to drive home that message Island Health teamed up with four of Vancouver Island’s Junior Hockey teams. These young hockey players are leaders both on and off the ice and by choosing to live a smoke-free lifestyle they are sending a compelling message to their peer group about smoking.
The four teams participating included the Victoria Cougars, Comox Valley Glacier Kings, Campbell River Storm and Nanaimo Buccaneers. Smoke-free messaging is displayed at the games with resources available for living a tobacco-free life.
Players, coaches and team personnel all receive tobacco prevention training and as part of their partnership with Island Health, each team must make a number of presentations on tobacco-free sports to elementary and middle school students in their region.

Yesterday, we hosted the grand opening celebration of the Center for the Urban Child, which is located across campus from our main hospital building. The Center will officially opens in 6 days, but St. Christopher's staff, local dignitaries and medical professionals, and Tenet leaders joined us in celebrating the new building.
