My aunts old 1997 Chevrolet cavalier coupe RS, it died in 2018 and she gave it to the Rawhide Boys Ranch. I have no idea who took these photos, but everything matches up with her cavalier, same color, rust, hubcaps, same mileage, and the last reported service in 2018 matches with when she donated it. Although I believe these photos were taken shortly before she got it. I'm guessing that they were taken by the person who sold it to the dealership that my aunt bought it from.

This is the 2nd generation of the Cavalier, which survived for just over two decades (1981-2005) before ending production after three generations. In that time span, the Cavalier was sold as a Pontiac (Sunfire) and a Toyota (Cavalier).

Though the nameplate has been gone for over a decade, General Motors recently decided to resurrect it for sale in the Chinese market. Who knows if the nameplate's success there could lead to its spread elsewhere and, maybe, a possible return to the North American market where it was born.

Basically a re-badged Chevy Cavalier with a slightly edgier design. In 2005, the Sunfire was replaced by the G5 after about 11 years on the market. They're not a terribly common sight these days.

Never really known for reliability of build quality, the Cavalier has become increasingly uncommon on the streets these days. The model was discontinued in 2005 globally (pictured is one of the last ones made during model years 2003-2005), but resurrected for the Chinese market in 2017 where a new fourth generation is sold alongside the Chevy Cruz. Chevrolet has announced that it will bring the Cavalier to Mexico next year, marking the Cavalier's return to North America after a 3 year hiatus.

I highly doubt we will see the Cavalier back in the USA again given the presence of the Cruz, but Americans closer to the southern border may soon start seeing some new Cavaliers on the road again from time to time.

You can call this "Throwback Saturday," 'cause that's what's going on here. So, here's a little backstory behind this piece of automotive excellence... Back in 2002 or so, I was cruising around in a 1993 Chevy Cavalier. It was really a great, reliable car, and I didn't mind it because "you can't beat free." (Thanks for the car, Dad.) I was on the way home from band practice one Ohio night. I glanced over, momentarily saw a deer running nearly parallel to my car, then it promptly bolted right in front of me. At 50 MPH, it bounced right off like a Rubbermaid trash can would and ran off. In the process, this deer - which was apparently built like a tank - crushed one of my headlights, crumpled my hood, and left fur on the license plate. Thank God I wasn't killed, as that's not completely unheard of in that part of the world. Somehow, the highbeams still worked, so I turned those on (headlights for safety!) and blinded some people on the drive home. I really didn't care, as my adrenaline was pumping to such a degree I couldn't sleep that night. The next morning, I headed to the junkyard and picked up a replacement headlight bucket. Being a broke college kid, I couldn't afford the hood I also needed.

As fate would have it, my best friend's Cavalier had just thrown a rod so, riding high on ambition, he beat the hell out of the car, with the hope of winning "worst car" in a "hoopty car show," sponsored by a local radio station. He invited me over, and we beat the car with a pipe wrench, some guys added duct tape racing stripes to the hood and painted flames on the hood, and some fat guy caved in the roof by doing a "diving leg drop" wrestling move.

After all this work (and fun), cars in a lot worse condition rolled into the car show (my buddy had his towed in) and, defeated, he had it towed 30 miles back to his apartment complex, where it languished with no potential in the humid Ohio air.

Thus, I asked if I could swap car hoods. With my friend actually being my best friend, he didn't care, so I made my way on over to the apartment complex one day and did what I needed to do.

After that, people, of course, didn't get it. They laughed at my hood. I laughed, too. It's just one of those scenarios where to have to make the best of the situation. You've just got to suck it up and play along with the joke, whether that's the intention or not. After all, I could have bought some paint and covered it all up, but I didn't.

A dozen years later, I'm in a much better place now, but that's the kind of thing that keeps me grounded, and part of it was an initiation. I asked my dad for help, and he said "You can do it... You can figure it out. This is the kind of thing that'll make you a man." I accepted the challenge, and it was for the best.
