The Chesterfield Canal, close to Clarborough, Nottinghamshire, UK. The canal opened in 1777 and runs from Chesterfield, Derbyshire to the River Trent in West Stockwith, Nottinghamshire.
This part of the canal is shallow with clear water and inclined banks and appears very river-like until you come across obvious canal infrastructure like this old bridge.

Before leaving for Japan there was just time to take in a football match. It was still two weeks away from the Premier League starting so watching my own team was out of the question but luckily nearby to where we were staying was the opportunity to go to this match.
The last time I went to see Chesterfield at home my own team Brighton were in town and it turned into a fairly ill-tempered match as the two teams were vying for the title. Their respective fortunes have changed significantly since. Chesterfield have been out of the league, while Brighton are now one of the big boys. It's incredible. The one thing the two teams have in common though is that they have both moved to new stadiums. In the case of Chesterfield they now play at The SMH Group Stadium, having left Saltergate in 2010.
Here they were playing Barrow, a team from Cumbria who have fought back from being out of the league between 1972 and 2020. The home side won 1-0. It was a scrappy game to be fair - not that easy on the eye
Chesterfield, Idaho is a nice combination of beautiful restored buildings and abandoned houses on the outskirts of town. The nearest house is known as the James McClellan house and the other is the Edward Reese house. The mountains across the valley are the Portneuf Range in Caribou-Targhee National Forest. The snow is finally melting from the valley floor but it is too early for the fields to turn green. This area was settled in the 1880's but mostly abandoned because of extremely harsh winters.
