The Shrine of Bayazid Bostami is a shrine in Chattogram, Bangladesh. Bayazid Bostami was a famous Persian Sufi born in Bostam, Iran. Its shrine area as a complex consists of a tomb surrounded by a brick structure along with an old mosque and a large pond. There is no significant historical evidence about Bostami's visit and tomb in this area. The whole complex is located on a hillock of Nasirabad, considered to be a holy place and attracts a large number of visitors and pilgrims daily.
The tomb and the sarcophagus it houses were originally discovered in 1831, and at the time were enclosed by a wall with protective pillars, that have since been replaced by a more modern structure. At the foot of the tomb hill, there is an ancient three-domed mosque, which is believed to date from the time of the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb (1618–1707). The interior of the mosque is sparsely decorated, while the mihrab on the qibla wall (indicating the direction of Mecca) has an identical projection on its opposite side.
Although the shrine is believed to be Bostami's tomb according to local tradition, there is no significant historical evidence about Bostami's visit to this part of Bangladesh. It is thought that this tomb was attributed to him as a jawab or imitation. According to Hamidullah Khan (a historian of 19th-century Chittagong), Muslim faqirs and wanderers of the time used to come to Chittagong to take their seats on hill tops surrounded by jungles.
Some people believe that Bostami visited this part of the world during his lifetime. According to legend, during his return local followers asked him to stay in Chittagong. Overwhelmed by their love and devotion, Bostami pierced his fifth (little) finger, allowed a few drops of blood to fall to the ground, and permitted his followers to build a shrine there on his name.
Although there is no authentic historical record about Bostami's visit to Chittagong, some 18th-century Bengali poets remembered a Shah Sultan of Nasirabad in their poems.
In front of the tomb, there is a large pond that houses a large number of black soft-shelled turtles known as Bostami turtle or Bostami kachim (locally called mazari) which are a very rare and critically endangered species. Legends claim that these turtles are the descendants of evil spirits that incurred the wrath of the renowned saint, Bayazid Bostami, while he was visiting the area. It is believed that the evil spirits were then transformed into turtles as a punishment and are doomed to spend eternity in this pool. At present, the shrine's caretakers – the Mazar Committee – protect the turtle population but will not allow specimens to be taken anymore, regardless of whether they would be killed or reintroduced into the wild.
Scientifically, the black soft-shelled turtle or Bostami turtle (Aspideretes nigricans, sometimes placed in genus Nilssonia) is a species of freshwater turtle found in India (Assam and Tripura) and Bangladesh (Chittagong). They have been long-believed to be inbred variants of the Ganges soft-shelled turtle (A. gangeticus or N. gangeticus) or the peacock soft-shelled turtle (A. hurum or N. hurum). While it is a close relative of the latter, it is a distinct species. As of 2002, the IUCN classified the species as extinct in the wild.
2012 an initiative taken to build a multi-storey mosque at the location of the pond was stayed by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. Although several concrete pillars had been erected inside the shrine pond, about 10 feet off the bank despite the rule of high court. #bangladesh #bayazidbustamiturtle

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : As a recognized Businessman, what kind of difficulty you have faced during this COVID19 Pandemic?
MASHIUR : During the Pandemic situation, it was difficult to release the imported goods from Chittagong customs due to late presentation of shipping documents by shippers as most of the banks including international express companies and Airlines were stopped their services during COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, Chattogram Port, Private Container yards as well as local Inland Transportation companies all were suspended their services during this crisis. Hence many orders were cancelled due to such uncertain crisis. With so much of the economy and supply chain shutdown, it’s hard to know if can continue operating in this environment. Obviously, financial stress also involved during COVID-19 Pandemic crisis.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : About 4 months after the lockdown eased, is the business recession over to some extent?
MASHIUR : I think it is not easier to overcome the business recession in this year though our Government has progressively eased the lockdown.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : What is your future business plan within this COVID19 Pandemic? What do you think the previous market environment will return?
MASHIUR : I am rightly focused on the huge business continuity challenges posed by COVID-19. First and foremost I must ensure that employees are as safe as possible, securing financial sustainability, assessing the resilience of supply chains and reinforcing crucial systems to support unprecedented levels of remote working and online trading. I hope the previous market environment may turn in coming new year, Insha’Allah.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : Do you think regular Trade Fairs can help your industry to gain more momentum, this year?
MASHIUR : The current concerns about COVID-19 spreading are, the restrictions in everyday life, as well as the cancellations of planned trade fairs worldwide, are comprehensible. But Worlds society will try to defeat COVID-19. And there will also be a time after COVID-19 in the marketing and event business – as hard as it is to believe, considering the present given economic slump and the wave of canceled International Trade fairs, Conferences and Major events.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : What would you advice to the other businessman during this pandemic? How They Should revamp their Business after this pandemic?
MASHIUR : Companies and Entrepreneurs which have gone digital are adapting to the crisis better than their peers. Business leaders need to devise a lockdown exit strategy. We should continue to use technology to augment, not replace, people. Companies should embrace the cultural and behavioral shifts that COVID19 introduced.
Actively encourage flexible work arrangements such as teleworking or staggered shifts. Perform routine environmental cleaning. Routinely clean and disinfect all frequently touched surfaces, such as workstations, countertops, handrails, and doorknobs. Discourage sharing of tools and equipment,if feasible.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : How much your Industry is affected during this pandemic?
MASHIUR : This Pandemic turns massive challenges both in financial and operational.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS : Do you think Online Trade Fairs can help a bit and can be added with regular offline Trade Fairs?
MASHIUR : The latest Trade Fairs/Conferences to roll out virtual events, as numerous in-person gatherings have been canceled or postponed due to directives to avoid unnecessary travel. Each of these cancellations and postponements is right because health and human well-being always come first. After all, we are now very well equipped for digital: Many formats allow meetings and arrangements to be made Online. In the industry, the buzz word of the past few weeks is "Virtual Trade Fair" – in short, the relocation of showrooms, exhibitor appearances, and conferences employing live streams to the screens of all those who are interested in the exhibits and product developments. Technologies such as Augmented and Mixed Reality are bringing creative progress, but the question arises as to whether people as social beings with a strong sense of community want to and actually can be satisfied exclusively with digital experiences – without the so valuable touchpoint "Real-Life".
Once we have mastered the crisis, the majority of private and professional activities will return to Normal life. A true longing for the newly-won and old-familiar freedom will arise because only when we share experiences with other people do we come alive. Therefore, physical experiences will always be relevant. Even more: I think that after this crisis people will have an even greater need for offline experiences in the "real" world and the senses of all of us will become more sensitive. But some things will change.

He was a professor at University of Chittagong, served as a member of the advisory board at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and member of the syndicate at Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology until his death . He also served as the director of the Research Center for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (RCMPS) at the University of Chittagong, Chattogram, Bangladesh.
