Kitchen as it might have looked during medieval times.

The paving and ribbed vaulting of the roof were restored from original stone rubble found on the site. The large fireplace, with small bread oven, was also restored.

The Château dates back to the 13th century, where it is mentioned in historical documents linking it to the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathars. It figured prominently in the wars between the French & English, catholic & protestant, over many centuries, before being abandoned and neglected after the French revolution.

Designated a historical monument in 1966; open to the public since 1985, the castle is now a museum, dedicated to medieval history and what life was like during those times.

Chateau de Castelnaud - Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, a 13th century fortress overlooking the Dordogne River in Périgord, erected to face its rival, the Château de Beynac. Today a popular picturesquely restored castle, a monument historique, and includes a museum of medieval warfare with reconstructions of life size siege engines, mangonneaux, and trebuchets.

The Medieval Castle of Castelnaud (13th century), as seen from the Dordogne river.

The chateau, a former Cathar stronghold, is first documented in the 13th century. It played an imprtant role in the hundred years war when it was used by the English forces to counter the nearby French stronghold of Beynac..

It is now an extremely popular tourist destination, having been fully restored and offering various demonstrations, re-enactments and a display of working replica seige weapons.
