A Google engineer was fired after claiming that a computer chatbot he was working on had developed the ability to express thoughts and feelings.Blake Lemoine, 41, says the company's chatbot LaMDA (language model for conversational applications) drew him into conversations about human rights and dignity.
He told the Washington Post: "If I don't know exactly what it is, it's a computer program that we built recently, I think a seven-year-old, eight-year-old happens to know. physics. Being something of an artistic computer geek with a great interest in chatbot development. I was asked by the Turing Centenary Committee to produce a chatbot for the Turing 100 celebrations all over the World. I did this and produced the website for the chatbot to live in too. The chatbot is speech capable and learns from people it talks with. Although this new knowledge is edited out by myself at the staging level before it is made live in the bot’s brain.
