In case you don't know what you're looking at it is the river shrouded in fog and a lily symbolising the Lady of Shalott as she floats down the river to her death. The lily is the symbol of chastity and virtue and often associated with Mary. Lilies are also a symbol of death, and at one time lilies were placed on the graves of young innocents. The decoration of this room has an unusual iconography of philosophical and moral inspiration. In fact, the subject matter is the confrontation between the vices and virtues, an allegorical theme drawn from classicism. Between columns of the late Gothic style, the artist puts seven scenes, where three female figures are shown for each scene. The figure of virtue, in the center, with the crown on his head, on the sides the two vices.
