I suppose an America's Cup chase boat may need 1,200 horsepower to keep up with the AC72 catamarans, when they get up on their "foils".

I read lots of reports stating that these sailboats are the fastest in the world, being able to sail at 46 - 50 mph in a wind of lesser strength. They sure do look fast and exciting from the shore.

They have some catching up to do. In November of 2012, the sailboat Quantum Leap sped at 75 mph over a 500 meter course.
