The Sun Hotel formerly known as The Little Inn made famous by Charles Dickens in his travels to Kent.
——
The Grade II listed Sun Hotel in Sun Street, just metres from the main gate of Canterbury Cathedral, is one of the city's most recognisable buildings and known internationally as Mr Micawber's 'Little Inn' in the novel David Copperfield. Despite the plaque outside saying 1503, it was originally built in 1480.

On we went,
floating towards the heart of this strange place--
with water all about us where never water was elsewhere--
clusters of houses, churches, heaps of stately buildings growing out of it--
and, everywhere, the same extraordinary silence.
Presently, we shot across a broad and open stream;
and passing, as I thought,
before a spacious paved quay,
where the bright lamps with which it was illuminated
showed long rows of arches and pillars,
of ponderous construction and great strength,
but as light
to the eye as garlands of hoarfrost or gossamer--
and where, for the first time, I saw people walking-
arrived at a flight of steps
leading from the water to a large mansion,
where, having passed through corridors and galleries innumerable,
I lay down to rest;
listening to the black boats
stealing up and down below the window
on the rippling water,
till I fell asleep.

FIREFLIES – OWL CITY
Hello everyone; do you all remember me?
I'm Kitty from da Hood's little cat, they call me l'il Billy
It's a sunny day today; I'm feeling lazy;
don't wanna climb a tree
The word out on the street is that it's a sunny Saturday
so I says to Mum, “Hey, don't forget 'bout Caturday!”
I really don't mind posing for a picture in a hat today
but I'd rather sniff the table;
catch the sunlight and be shadowy
I'm just chilling out; I'm a part of the garden statuary
I stand so still and let nature be a part of me
it comes in handy when I see the local constabulary
I'm like the Neighbourhood Watch reporting back on all I see
if you see a twitching curtain
and a glimpse of fur, you'll guess it's me
as I clamber up the back of the ancient antique big settee
and I play peek through the curtain,
pulling threads of cotton recklessly
but Mum never tells me off, because you see she is my Family
I run around behind her; she says I'm like a little dog
but what she doesn't realise is
I'm protecting her from the seaside fog
ok, I know it's sunny now, but it creeps up on you suddenly
and she has no sense of direction,
so she might get swept out far to sea
oh yes, I hear you laughing and you think that I'm so very silly
but I have an important job to do … gotta go …
Mum just called “Where you at Billy?!!

Life is little better than a dream, and little worth the loves and strivings that we crowd into it.
We see Home fairly written.
Shining from the word, as rays shine from a star, we see how, when our graves are old, other hopes than ours are young, other hearts than ours are moved; how other ways are smoothed; how other happiness blooms, ripens, and decays--no, not decays, for other homes and other bands of children, not yet in being nor for ages yet to be, arise, and bloom and ripen to the end of all!
Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach.”
― A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens.
I love Christmas. It's my favourite time of the year: a season of kindness and generosity, friendship, laughter and love. It is also the time for Christmas traditions, like reading some of the lovely literature written about Christmas time, including Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol".
The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 6th of December is “sprinkles”. In this case, to meet the theme, the sprinkles photographed are required to be the very small pieces of coloured sugar or chocolate used as a decoration on the top of cakes, ice cream, etc., and not inedible ones like table sprinkles used only for decoration. Luckily, as a baker, I have a shaker of sprinkles in my pantry, and I have dashed out a good measure of them across the title page of my first edition copy of Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" illustrated by Arthur Rackham published by William Heinemann in London in 1915. The background is some beautiful hand stencilled paper featuring proteas which I considered rather festive. I hope you like my choice for this week's theme, and that it makes you smile!
