About 6 years ago, I was asked by a friend at a graphic design company to help with a job they had for Bromley's Children's Centres. The Children's Centres had already been using a 'stock image' monster very similar to the green chap in the top left corner and they wanted some friends designed for him for use in their promotional literature. These were some of the sketches I worked up after an initial experimental period as I tried to develop each character in to a set of poses and holding a set of specified props. I enjoyed this and it was my first experience of designing for an unknown client. The challenge came in creating monsters who didn't look scary - the children they were designed for are pre-school age. The teeth and smiles seemed to make the main difference to this.
I created this character as practice for dogs and made a wonderful character concept, Jojo(Mark). I had to continue his story. Backgrounds are a huge focus for this right now. I've been focusing more on the character these past years and I need to broaden artistic abilities further. The calligraphy on the walls is a language from the game Skyrim and I found that they fit in well to the picture.
From a photo essay entitled "Character Commerce" about the many people who appear in dress each day on Hollywood Blvd. in Los Angeles to pose with tourists for tips, even though nobody has hired them to do so.
