St Martin, Overstrand, Norfolk

 

Like several churches in this part of the world, St Martin was in a very bad state by the 19th century, with only part of its nave still in use for worship, and the decision was made to rebuild it. It seems to have been a north Norfolk fashion to rebuild on a new site, and so when Christ Church was erected in the churchyard beside St Martin in 1867, St Martin was left as a picturesque ruin. However, in 1883, Clement Scott eulogised this area in an article written for the Daily Telegraph, and the legend of Poppyland, a dreamlike English idyll, was born.

 

The north Norfolk coast became a popular holiday destination, thanks to Scott's writing and the opening up of the area by the railways. Perhaps a characterless Victorian church did not fit in with Scott's vision of what Poppyland was, and what people might find there. The medieval parish church at neighbouring Sidestrand had been rebuilt on a new site in an entirely medieval round-towered style, and so it was that Christ Church was demolished, and the ruin of St Martin restored to something approaching its former glory. The architects were Cecil Upcher and AJ Lacey, and the church was opened on the eve of the First World War.

 

The reconstruction coincided with the pre-War triumphalism of the Church of England, which was at that time at its highest point in the national consciousness, but the project demanded a rigorously vernacular style, and so too many excesses were avoided. The guardian angel in his niche on the south side is not a taste of things to come, because you step into a relatively plain and simple interior which is full of light from the clear glass windows. The only colour comes from a vibrant east window depicting Christ in Majesty with St Cuthbert and St Martin accompanied by otters, dogs and ducks above scenes of Durham and Tours cathedrals. The aisle and chancel are by Upcher & Lacey, the north doorway surviving to create an unusual opening between aisle and nave. Mortlock says the current south porch was originally on the north side. Arthur Mee says that the old font was found in a garden.

 

Although Overstrand is in many ways still a remote backwater, the memorials and headstones here record links to some of the 19th century's most significant philanthropic families, including members of the Buxton and Gurney families as well as Lady Battersea, who was one of the Rothschilds.

 

Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton was the millionaire owner of Truman's brewery. He married Elizabeth Fry's sister, and as MP for Weymouth and the Isle of Portland he spoke strongly in parliament for the abolition of all slavery, even after the ending of the slave trade. It is said that his advocacy of the extension of liberty in Africa through the influence of legitimate trade under the protection of Christianity inspired the Scottish doctor, David Livingstone, to go to Africa as a missionary.

 

Tragedy haunted Buxton and his wife Hannah: four of their children died during an outbreak of whooping cough in the early spring of 1820. Buxton himself never came to terms with his failure to eradicate slavery from Africa; he died in 1845, and was buried here. His memorial is inside the church, but he was also to be found on a recent British five pound note, where he was the spectacled figure standing to the left of his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Fry.

St Mary, Hadleigh, Suffolk

 

Hadleigh is a pleasant, self-important little town. It is one of those places remote enough to be a microcosm of bigger towns - the factories, shops and housing estates all to scale. Its centrality in this part of Suffolk gave it the headquarters of Babergh District Council in 1974, despite the fact that the greater part of the population of the district lives in the Sudbury conurbation and the southern suburbs of Ipswich. Having said that, Hadleigh has expanded greatly in recent years, with characterless new estates now lining the bypass, and in any case Babergh District Council has since merged with Mid-Suffolk District Council and the councillors have all toddled off to Stowmarket. But the heart of the town is still probably the loveliest of any in East Anglia.

 

If Hadleigh is small, however, St Mary is not. This is one of the grand Suffolk churches, the only big one with a medieval spire which is also the only proper wood and lead spire in the county. There are echoes of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, only without the twist. It was built in the 14th century, and the exterior bell, a 1280 clock bell doubling as a sanctus bell, is Suffolk's oldest. The aisles, clerestory and chancel head eastwards of it, equalling Lavenham in their sense of the substantial. It is one of the longest churches in Suffolk.

 

To the south west of the church stands the famous Hadleigh Deanery, more properly the gorgeous red brick Tudor gateway to the now demolished medieval Deanery. It was at this Deanery gateway in July 1833 that the meeting was held which gave birth to the Oxford Movement, and went on to change the face of Anglican churches forever. It is no exaggeration to say that the modern Church of England was born in this building. The Rector here, in one of those anachronisms so beloved of the CofE, is styled 'Dean of Bocking'. Bocking is a village in Essex, and the living is in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, so Hadleigh Rectors are installed in Canterbury Cathedral.

 

The south side of the graveyard is taken up by the former guild hall, and on the fourth side there is a scattering of excellent 18th and 19th century municipal and commercial buildings. With the possible exception of the Bury churches, it is the best setting of any urban church in Suffolk. Hadleigh was one of the great cloth towns, a centre for merchants rather than factories (most of the work was farmed out to self-employed weavers in nearby villages, quite literally a cottage industry). The wealth of those days rebuilt the church, particularly the fine 15th century clerestory and aisles.This is a big church, since it needed to contain the chantry altars of at least five medieval guilds. And it has always been an urban church, as you can tell from the way buildings on the north side cut into it. The east window was clearly always intended to be seen up the gap to the busy High Street.

 

The magnificent south doorway retains its original 15th century doors. It is interesting to compare it with Cotton, barely 50 years older, but from a quite different generation of architecture. Gone are the delicate fleurons, the articulate details that speak of an internal sense of mystery. Here, we enter the realms of self-confident rationalism for the first time. You step into a space that is light and airy, so vast that at once it swallows sound, a feeling accentuated by the sheer width of the chancel arch. Trees close by on the north side gently wave shadows into the nave. It feels that the church is organically part of the town and has been so down the long centuries, although perhaps it is hard at first to see this building as anything other than the rather polite CofE parish church it has become.

 

If you'd been here some ten years or so ago, you might have though that this was a very strange church, for there was the surreal sight of a snooker table and a pool table in the north aisle. They were part of what was called the Hadleigh Porch Project, an attempt to provide something to do for teenagers in the town who had been causing a nuisance in the churchyard and porch. The parish galvanised itself and attracted funding, and the building became used by young people for secular activities, one idea being that the sense of ownership conveyed would give them a sense of responsibility. Coming here in Lent of 2013, I was struck by the Stations of the Cross lining the arcades, each created by a local youth group or organisation. They were radically different from anything I'd seen before, and I'm sure that Maggi Hambling's Christ, looking on from the north aisle, would have approved.

 

Coming back in 2019, the snooker and pool tables have now gone, and so have the run of the mill Victorian benches that filled the nave. Regular users of this site will know that I am an enthusiast of replacing 19th Century pews with modern chairs in medieval churches, but here you can't help feeling that it hasn't really been done very well. The chairs themselves are not the problem so much as the floor, which has been left with expanses of floor boards between the lines of poor encaustic tiles. Perhaps there are plans to replace all of this with a polished wood and pamment floor (Oundle in Northamptonshire is a good example on a similar scale). I hope so.

 

The sheer size of the nave and its aisles stops the stained glass overwhelming it, which is a relief because there is a lot of it and it is by no means all good. To start with the best, there is a 1988 window by John O'Connor for Chapel Studios beside Maggi Hambling's painting, a memorial to John Belton, a former rector. But the glass in the south aisle is mostly by Ward & Hughes, and some of it very poor indeed, from the height of that period when Thomas Curtis was trashing the brand.

 

Of course, there is much here that is older and more traditional. In the south chancel chapel is what has become known as the St Edmund bench end, attached to a modern bench. It appears to shows a wolf, with the Saint's head in its jaws. But a closer look shows that the beast has cloven hooves, and what are either wings and a collar or possibly eucharistic vestments. It is more likely related to those bench ends more common in east Norfolk depicting a mythical beast holding the head of St John the Baptist. There are squints through to the high altar from this chapel, so this was probably the site of a guild altar.

 

There are recent memories of the High Church past of St Mary. In the high sanctuary are not one but two plaques to former Dean Hugh Rose, one commemorating his conference that led to the Oxford Movement, and the other the centenary of that movement, laid by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1935. One of the plaques quotes Pusey's eulogy to Rose, that when hearts were failing, he bade us stir up the gift that was in us, and betake ourselves to our true mother. Another religious figure associated with Hadleigh is the puritan preacher Rowland Taylor, who was burned at the stake on nearby Aldham Common in the brief but unhappy reign of Mary I. One of the Ward & Hughes windows in the south aisle remembers him.

 

Up in the chancel, grinning figures peer down from the roof, and in the east window of the north chancel aisle is a small collection of old glass, including heraldic shields, a Tudor royal arms and haunting fragments of 15th Century English glass, all that survives of what must once have been one of the largest expanses in England, a sobering thought.

Since 2010, Chinese aluminium has conquered a quasi captive market. Following the repeated political exodus since 1980, 1991, 2003, and 2005-2008, the residential sectors of the hyper center, including the still existing Ottoman neighbourhoods (for instance facing the Khan Pasha) are now filled with vacant or squatted houses; they are now turning into second-rate and characterless shops, as garish as the commercial or industrial zones situated outside larger cities in Europe. In this respect, Baghdad is now undergoing a qualitative degradation and a functional transformation of its centre. Nevertheless the female dummies in the two window shops of the pictures below, seen sporting modern feminine fashion, show that in the commercial sectors at least one is still far from the chaste abaya discreetly evoked in the official posters.

I took this picture of the 1930's Art-Deco style Wimbledon Chase Garage situated in the Kingston Road S.W.20 in the early 1980's. It was soon to be demolished and replaced by a hideous characterless building like so many today.

I bought my first gallon of petrol here for my Triumph Tiger Cub motorbike when I was 16 in 1964. I remember counting out the small change. Four shillings and tenpence halfpenny a GALLON. That is approximately 5p per litre, and you were served by an attendant who was usually as miserable as sin...It also had a welcoming softly lit glass globe on top of each pump. [Mobil and National Benzole]

Child labour was still in force when in the 1950's I was sent to to this very garage to buy paraffin with a five gallon drum...It was so heavy [old ladies used to take pity on me and they still do] that I used to rest the full drum on front garden walls in a sort of relay till I got home. I can smell those paraffin heaters now! Yes, still happy days.

This beautiful church of St Nicholas, patron saint of seamen is found next to the busy port of Piraeus and is in stark contrast to the surrounding, characterless office blocks.

Up in the chancel, grinning figures peer down from the roof, and in the east window of the north chancel aisle is a small collection of old glass, including heraldic shields, a Tudor royal arms and haunting fragments of 15th Century English glass, all that survives of what must once have been one of the largest expanses in England, a sobering thought.

St Mary at Stoke, Ipswich, Suffolk

 

Urban rivers carve allegiances. The Gipping becomes tidal as it enters the Borough of Ipswich, splits around an island, and remerges as the Orwell. 1500 years ago, along this fertile estuary, Anglo-Saxon trading and manufacturing settlements merged to form England's longest continually-occupied town, Gippeswyk, the modern Ipswich. For a while, it was the largest manufacturing and trading town in northern Europe, and even towards the end of the twentieth century Ipswich was first and foremost an industrial port.

 

The Orwell meets the Stour eight miles downriver, and disgorges into the great German Ocean at the border between the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of East Anglia and Essex. Not far north of Ipswich was the East Anglian capital at Rendlesham and the great royal burial ground at Sutton Hoo overlooking the Deben. By the time Ipswich had emerged as a proper Borough at the end of the 12th century, its heart was in the quayside parishes of St Peter, St Clement and St Mary at Quay on the north side of the river. Across the river, the gentle hills were quietly settled by farmers and villagers. Stoke Hills overlooked the town centre across the water, but the main road to London was some way to the west, crossing the river at Handford, and so Stoke developed a strong and perhaps slightly smug independence, an identity all of its own. Even today, older Ipswichers can be heard to refer to the part of the town south of the river as 'Over Stoke'.

 

Stoke was large enough to form two parishes, St Augustine and St Mary. The parish church of St Mary occupies a site on a dramatic bluff overlooking the river, across which it faces St Peter, a couple of hundred metres away. St Mary at Stoke is the only one of the twelve surviving medieval churches in Ipswich town centre to stand south of the River Orwell. The church of St Augustine, which served the quayside area south of the river, is now lost to us. It was still in use in the 1480s, but all traces of it have completely disappeared. It was probably about 100 yards away in Vernon Street. After the Reformation, St Augustine's parish was merged into that of St Peter, and St Mary at Stoke retained its relatively rural feel, so close to the heart of the town. As recently as 1801, the population of the parish was just 385.

 

And then, as John Barbrook in his excellent guidebook tells us, the railways came. The impact of their coming upon a town like Ipswich, which was already a burgeoning industrial port, should not be underestimated. However, the Stoke Hills, as gentle as they are by Northern standards, proved an impenetrable barrier to the line from Liverpool Street. Consequently. Ipswich's first railway station was built in the south of the parish of St Mary at Stoke, and a mid-Victorian railway town grew up around it. In the 1860s, a tunnel was blasted through the hills so that the line could be extended to Norwich, and a new railway station was built, again in St Mary at Stoke parish, linked to the centre of Ipswich by a major new road, Princes Street. By 1871, the population of the parish had grown to more than 3,000, a ten-fold increase in less than a lifetime, unmatched by almost any other parish in East Anglia.

 

This development needs to be borne in mind when exploring St Mary at Stoke parish church. From the south, you see a large, blockish Victorian building with flushwork on the porch and transept, a little characterless otherwise. The focus is all to the south, the graveyard dropping away quickly on the other three sides, as if reminding us of the long tradition here of independence from Ipswich over the water.

 

However, walking around to east or west you discover that behind it there is another church, medieval this time, and still rural in feel. The tower is at the west end of the older church, and the two are joined as if non-identical Siamese twins.

 

This is a welcoming church, as are most in Ipswich town centre, open to pilgrims and strangers every day. You step inside to the impression of two churches joined together, the near one Victorian and wide, the far one narrower and older. In fact, this impression is almost exactly right. The original medieval church is now the north aisle ahead of you, which is why the tower is off-centre. The 1872 nave you step into is the work of the great Anglo-catholic architect William Butterfield. This church came 15 years after his masterpiece All Saints, Margaret Street. And yet, St Mary at Stoke has nothing like the excitement of that or his other fine London churches. The chequerboard flintwork on the porch and transept are perhaps echoes of St Mary le Tower in the middle of town.

 

There were two major rebuildings here. The first, in 1864, rather unforgivably destroyed a magnificent Tudor porch in red brick. This rebuilding, by Richard Phipson, the Diocesan architect, gave us the huge, austere transept on the northern side. The intention seems to have been to increase the capacity of the building while tarting it up a bit. Twelve years later, Butterfield's work here was rather more ambitious. He created a large urban church to the south of the original, the joining arcade making an aisle of the old nave.

 

Standing inside the main entrance, everything appears 19th century, from the font nearby to the grand reredos with the east window above. But this illusion of an entirely Victorian building is dispelled if you walk through the arcade and look up. Here, the north aisle, which was the original church, retains its medieval hammerbeam roof. Because of this, the aisle retains a different atmosphere to the nave, its patterned glass in the aisle east window a counterpoint to Clayton & Bell's typically plodding east window to the south of it. The Heaton, Butler & Bayne glass along the south wall is better.

 

Halfway along the rather stark north wall is a Great Eastern Railway insignia from a train, a reminder of the industry which almost single-handedly turned this parish into an urban one. In the 20th century, this church had two chapels of ease in the parish, St Etheldreda near the railway bridge on Wherstead Road, and St Edmund beside the school on Ranelagh Road. These have now completely disappeared, but a haunting remnant survives in the form of St Etheldreda's banner on display in the north aisle.

 

The population of the parish fell sharply in the years after the Second World War because of slum clearance along Vernon Street and Wherstead Road. There was further large scale clearance of terraced houses and industry in the 1990s. However, the continued redevelopment around the docklands has begun to redress the balance, and in any case, and rather pleasingly, St Mary at Stoke turns its back in its traditional manner to the town centre across the river to be the flagship church of the South-West Ipswich Team Ministry, serving, along with the modern estate churches, more than thirty thousand people in the areas of Stoke Park, Thorington Hall, Chantry and Pinewood.

St Mary, Hadleigh, Suffolk

 

Hadleigh is a pleasant, self-important little town. It is one of those places remote enough to be a microcosm of bigger towns - the factories, shops and housing estates all to scale. Its centrality in this part of Suffolk gave it the headquarters of Babergh District Council in 1974, despite the fact that the greater part of the population of the district lives in the Sudbury conurbation and the southern suburbs of Ipswich. Having said that, Hadleigh has expanded greatly in recent years, with characterless new estates now lining the bypass, and in any case Babergh District Council has since merged with Mid-Suffolk District Council and the councillors have all toddled off to Stowmarket. But the heart of the town is still probably the loveliest of any in East Anglia.

 

If Hadleigh is small, however, St Mary is not. This is one of the grand Suffolk churches, the only big one with a medieval spire which is also the only proper wood and lead spire in the county. There are echoes of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, only without the twist. It was built in the 14th century, and the exterior bell, a 1280 clock bell doubling as a sanctus bell, is Suffolk's oldest. The aisles, clerestory and chancel head eastwards of it, equalling Lavenham in their sense of the substantial. It is one of the longest churches in Suffolk.

 

To the south west of the church stands the famous Hadleigh Deanery, more properly the gorgeous red brick Tudor gateway to the now demolished medieval Deanery. It was at this Deanery gateway in July 1833 that the meeting was held which gave birth to the Oxford Movement, and went on to change the face of Anglican churches forever. It is no exaggeration to say that the modern Church of England was born in this building. The Rector here, in one of those anachronisms so beloved of the CofE, is styled 'Dean of Bocking'. Bocking is a village in Essex, and the living is in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, so Hadleigh Rectors are installed in Canterbury Cathedral.

 

The south side of the graveyard is taken up by the former guild hall, and on the fourth side there is a scattering of excellent 18th and 19th century municipal and commercial buildings. With the possible exception of the Bury churches, it is the best setting of any urban church in Suffolk. Hadleigh was one of the great cloth towns, a centre for merchants rather than factories (most of the work was farmed out to self-employed weavers in nearby villages, quite literally a cottage industry). The wealth of those days rebuilt the church, particularly the fine 15th century clerestory and aisles.This is a big church, since it needed to contain the chantry altars of at least five medieval guilds. And it has always been an urban church, as you can tell from the way buildings on the north side cut into it. The east window was clearly always intended to be seen up the gap to the busy High Street.

 

The magnificent south doorway retains its original 15th century doors. It is interesting to compare it with Cotton, barely 50 years older, but from a quite different generation of architecture. Gone are the delicate fleurons, the articulate details that speak of an internal sense of mystery. Here, we enter the realms of self-confident rationalism for the first time. You step into a space that is light and airy, so vast that at once it swallows sound, a feeling accentuated by the sheer width of the chancel arch. Trees close by on the north side gently wave shadows into the nave. It feels that the church is organically part of the town and has been so down the long centuries, although perhaps it is hard at first to see this building as anything other than the rather polite CofE parish church it has become.

 

If you'd been here some ten years or so ago, you might have though that this was a very strange church, for there was the surreal sight of a snooker table and a pool table in the north aisle. They were part of what was called the Hadleigh Porch Project, an attempt to provide something to do for teenagers in the town who had been causing a nuisance in the churchyard and porch. The parish galvanised itself and attracted funding, and the building became used by young people for secular activities, one idea being that the sense of ownership conveyed would give them a sense of responsibility. Coming here in Lent of 2013, I was struck by the Stations of the Cross lining the arcades, each created by a local youth group or organisation. They were radically different from anything I'd seen before, and I'm sure that Maggi Hambling's Christ, looking on from the north aisle, would have approved.

 

Coming back in 2019, the snooker and pool tables have now gone, and so have the run of the mill Victorian benches that filled the nave. Regular users of this site will know that I am an enthusiast of replacing 19th Century pews with modern chairs in medieval churches, but here you can't help feeling that it hasn't really been done very well. The chairs themselves are not the problem so much as the floor, which has been left with expanses of floor boards between the lines of poor encaustic tiles. Perhaps there are plans to replace all of this with a polished wood and pamment floor (Oundle in Northamptonshire is a good example on a similar scale). I hope so.

 

The sheer size of the nave and its aisles stops the stained glass overwhelming it, which is a relief because there is a lot of it and it is by no means all good. To start with the best, there is a 1988 window by John O'Connor for Chapel Studios beside Maggi Hambling's painting, a memorial to John Belton, a former rector. But the glass in the south aisle is mostly by Ward & Hughes, and some of it very poor indeed, from the height of that period when Thomas Curtis was trashing the brand.

 

Of course, there is much here that is older and more traditional. In the south chancel chapel is what has become known as the St Edmund bench end, attached to a modern bench. It appears to shows a wolf, with the Saint's head in its jaws. But a closer look shows that the beast has cloven hooves, and what are either wings and a collar or possibly eucharistic vestments. It is more likely related to those bench ends more common in east Norfolk depicting a mythical beast holding the head of St John the Baptist. There are squints through to the high altar from this chapel, so this was probably the site of a guild altar.

No. 1 - 6 Exploring: Göteborg (Gothenburg) City.

Arguably the highlight of any visit to Göteborg (Gothenburg) is a stroll around the charming district of Haga

- this is one of the former working-class districts of the city, condemned to demolition in the 1980's, but is now a lively, bustling and attractive neighbourhood. Once the seedy haunt of sailors, prostitutes, street-urchins, dockers and the assorted hard-knocks, the grid of tightly packed cobble streets has been gentrified Notting Hill-style, attracting well-heeled 20- and 30-somethings, as well as the odd artist, artisan and writer. If there ever was any working-class grit in Haga, the only place you'll find it now is lodged between the cobblestones, though the place has preserved its original layout. Some streets are lined with tall 19th-century tenement blocks while further towards the Skansparken, traditional pastel-coloured timber structures can be found. Some parts of Haga away from the shopping streets have been cleaned up so much they have become a touch bland and characterless.

Yes, the box and semaphores remain, and the clay trains still arrive, to run round for accessing the Fowey line.

However, the station is unmanned, a plastic box is the only way to get information from a faceless operator. Freight movements are few and far between, and when they do arrive, are in the charge of the characterless class. You can't get a train to Fowey - it's freight only. No more loco hauled passenger services, apart from one sleeper each way in the dark small hours. Sidings lay dormant and unused. Oh and if you want to use the loo........ forget it - get my drift?

India has never been high on my list of places to visit before I die but the recent opportunity for a visit was too much to refuse, although we had to first visit Dubai and that was somewhere much lower in my places to visit list and I wasn’t disappointed. Perfect in most ways it is a characterless City and oh so boring but to brighten things up there were a few double deckers running even if they were fully air conditioned low floor modern Neoplan deckers

St Mary at Stoke, Ipswich, Suffolk

 

Urban rivers carve allegiances. The Gipping becomes tidal as it enters the Borough of Ipswich, splits around an island, and remerges as the Orwell. 1500 years ago, along this fertile estuary, Anglo-Saxon trading and manufacturing settlements merged to form England's longest continually-occupied town, Gippeswyk, the modern Ipswich. For a while, it was the largest manufacturing and trading town in northern Europe, and even towards the end of the twentieth century Ipswich was first and foremost an industrial port.

 

The Orwell meets the Stour eight miles downriver, and disgorges into the great German Ocean at the border between the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of East Anglia and Essex. Not far north of Ipswich was the East Anglian capital at Rendlesham and the great royal burial ground at Sutton Hoo overlooking the Deben. By the time Ipswich had emerged as a proper Borough at the end of the 12th century, its heart was in the quayside parishes of St Peter, St Clement and St Mary at Quay on the north side of the river. Across the river, the gentle hills were quietly settled by farmers and villagers. Stoke Hills overlooked the town centre across the water, but the main road to London was some way to the west, crossing the river at Handford, and so Stoke developed a strong and perhaps slightly smug independence, an identity all of its own. Even today, older Ipswichers can be heard to refer to the part of the town south of the river as 'Over Stoke'.

 

Stoke was large enough to form two parishes, St Augustine and St Mary. The parish church of St Mary occupies a site on a dramatic bluff overlooking the river, across which it faces St Peter, a couple of hundred metres away. St Mary at Stoke is the only one of the twelve surviving medieval churches in Ipswich town centre to stand south of the River Orwell. The church of St Augustine, which served the quayside area south of the river, is now lost to us. It was still in use in the 1480s, but all traces of it have completely disappeared. It was probably about 100 yards away in Vernon Street. After the Reformation, St Augustine's parish was merged into that of St Peter, and St Mary at Stoke retained its relatively rural feel, so close to the heart of the town. As recently as 1801, the population of the parish was just 385.

 

And then, as John Barbrook in his excellent guidebook tells us, the railways came. The impact of their coming upon a town like Ipswich, which was already a burgeoning industrial port, should not be underestimated. However, the Stoke Hills, as gentle as they are by Northern standards, proved an impenetrable barrier to the line from Liverpool Street. Consequently. Ipswich's first railway station was built in the south of the parish of St Mary at Stoke, and a mid-Victorian railway town grew up around it. In the 1860s, a tunnel was blasted through the hills so that the line could be extended to Norwich, and a new railway station was built, again in St Mary at Stoke parish, linked to the centre of Ipswich by a major new road, Princes Street. By 1871, the population of the parish had grown to more than 3,000, a ten-fold increase in less than a lifetime, unmatched by almost any other parish in East Anglia.

 

This development needs to be borne in mind when exploring St Mary at Stoke parish church. From the south, you see a large, blockish Victorian building with flushwork on the porch and transept, a little characterless otherwise. The focus is all to the south, the graveyard dropping away quickly on the other three sides, as if reminding us of the long tradition here of independence from Ipswich over the water.

 

However, walking around to east or west you discover that behind it there is another church, medieval this time, and still rural in feel. The tower is at the west end of the older church, and the two are joined as if non-identical Siamese twins.

 

This is a welcoming church, as are most in Ipswich town centre, open to pilgrims and strangers every day. You step inside to the impression of two churches joined together, the near one Victorian and wide, the far one narrower and older. In fact, this impression is almost exactly right. The original medieval church is now the north aisle ahead of you, which is why the tower is off-centre. The 1872 nave you step into is the work of the great Anglo-catholic architect William Butterfield. This church came 15 years after his masterpiece All Saints, Margaret Street. And yet, St Mary at Stoke has nothing like the excitement of that or his other fine London churches. The chequerboard flintwork on the porch and transept are perhaps echoes of St Mary le Tower in the middle of town.

 

There were two major rebuildings here. The first, in 1864, rather unforgivably destroyed a magnificent Tudor porch in red brick. This rebuilding, by Richard Phipson, the Diocesan architect, gave us the huge, austere transept on the northern side. The intention seems to have been to increase the capacity of the building while tarting it up a bit. Twelve years later, Butterfield's work here was rather more ambitious. He created a large urban church to the south of the original, the joining arcade making an aisle of the old nave.

 

Standing inside the main entrance, everything appears 19th century, from the font nearby to the grand reredos with the east window above. But this illusion of an entirely Victorian building is dispelled if you walk through the arcade and look up. Here, the north aisle, which was the original church, retains its medieval hammerbeam roof. Because of this, the aisle retains a different atmosphere to the nave, its patterned glass in the aisle east window a counterpoint to Clayton & Bell's typically plodding east window to the south of it. The Heaton, Butler & Bayne glass along the south wall is better.

 

Halfway along the rather stark north wall is a Great Eastern Railway insignia from a train, a reminder of the industry which almost single-handedly turned this parish into an urban one. In the 20th century, this church had two chapels of ease in the parish, St Etheldreda near the railway bridge on Wherstead Road, and St Edmund beside the school on Ranelagh Road. These have now completely disappeared, but a haunting remnant survives in the form of St Etheldreda's banner on display in the north aisle.

 

The population of the parish fell sharply in the years after the Second World War because of slum clearance along Vernon Street and Wherstead Road. There was further large scale clearance of terraced houses and industry in the 1990s. However, the continued redevelopment around the docklands has begun to redress the balance, and in any case, and rather pleasingly, St Mary at Stoke turns its back in its traditional manner to the town centre across the river to be the flagship church of the South-West Ipswich Team Ministry, serving, along with the modern estate churches, more than thirty thousand people in the areas of Stoke Park, Thorington Hall, Chantry and Pinewood.

Its centrality in this part of Suffolk gave it the headquarters of Babergh District Council in 1974, despite the fact that the greater part of the population of the district lives in the Sudbury conurbation and the southern suburbs of Ipswich. Having said that, Hadleigh has expanded greatly in recent years, with characterless new estates now lining the bypass, and in any case Babergh District Council has since merged with Mid-Suffolk District Council and the councillors have all toddled off to Stowmarket. But the heart of the town is still probably the loveliest of any in East Anglia.

 

If Hadleigh is small, however, St Mary is not. This is one of the grand Suffolk churches, the only big one with a medieval spire which is also the only proper wood and lead spire in the county. There are echoes of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, only without the twist. It was built in the 14th century, and the exterior bell, a 1280 clock bell doubling as a sanctus bell, is Suffolk's oldest. The aisles, clerestory and chancel head eastwards of it, equalling Lavenham in their sense of the substantial. It is one of the longest churches in Suffolk.

 

To the south west of the church stands the famous Hadleigh Deanery, more properly the gorgeous red brick Tudor gateway to the now demolished medieval Deanery. It was at this Deanery gateway in July 1833 that the meeting was held which gave birth to the Oxford Movement, and went on to change the face of Anglican churches forever. It is no exaggeration to say that the modern Church of England was born in this building. The Rector here, in one of those anachronisms so beloved of the CofE, is styled 'Dean of Bocking'. Bocking is a village in Essex, and the living is in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, so Hadleigh Rectors are installed in Canterbury Cathedral.

 

The south side of the graveyard is taken up by the former guild hall, and on the fourth side there is a scattering of excellent 18th and 19th century municipal and commercial buildings. With the possible exception of the Bury churches, it is the best setting of any urban church in Suffolk. Hadleigh was one of the great cloth towns, a centre for merchants rather than factories (most of the work was farmed out to self-employed weavers in nearby villages, quite literally a cottage industry). The wealth of those days rebuilt the church, particularly the fine 15th century clerestory and aisles.This is a big church, since it needed to contain the chantry altars of at least five medieval guilds. And it has always been an urban church, as you can tell from the way buildings on the north side cut into it. The east window was clearly always intended to be seen up the gap to the busy High Street.

 

The magnificent south doorway retains its original 15th century doors. It is interesting to compare it with Cotton, barely 50 years older, but from a quite different generation of architecture. Gone are the delicate fleurons, the articulate details that speak of an internal sense of mystery. Here, we enter the realms of self-confident rationalism for the first time. You step into a space that is light and airy, so vast that at once it swallows sound, a feeling accentuated by the sheer width of the chancel arch. Trees close by on the north side gently wave shadows into the nave. It feels that the church is organically part of the town and has been so down the long centuries, although perhaps it is hard at first to see this building as anything other than the rather polite CofE parish church it has become.

 

If you'd been here some ten years or so ago, you might have though that this was a very strange church, for there was the surreal sight of a snooker table and a pool table in the north aisle. They were part of what was called the Hadleigh Porch Project, an attempt to provide something to do for teenagers in the town who had been causing a nuisance in the churchyard and porch. The parish galvanised itself and attracted funding, and the building became used by young people for secular activities, one idea being that the sense of ownership conveyed would give them a sense of responsibility. Coming here in Lent of 2013, I was struck by the Stations of the Cross lining the arcades, each created by a local youth group or organisation. They were radically different from anything I'd seen before, and I'm sure that Maggi Hambling's Christ, looking on from the north aisle, would have approved.

 

Coming back in 2019, the snooker and pool tables have now gone, and so have the run of the mill Victorian benches that filled the nave. Regular users of this site will know that I am an enthusiast of replacing 19th Century pews with modern chairs in medieval churches, but here you can't help feeling that it hasn't really been done very well. The chairs themselves are not the problem so much as the floor, which has been left with expanses of floor boards between the lines of poor encaustic tiles. Perhaps there are plans to replace all of this with a polished wood and pamment floor (Oundle in Northamptonshire is a good example on a similar scale). I hope so.

 

The sheer size of the nave and its aisles stops the stained glass overwhelming it, which is a relief because there is a lot of it and it is by no means all good. To start with the best, there is a 1988 window by John O'Connor for Chapel Studios beside Maggi Hambling's painting, a memorial to John Belton, a former rector. But the glass in the south aisle is mostly by Ward & Hughes, and some of it very poor indeed, from the height of that period when Thomas Curtis was trashing the brand.

 

Of course, there is much here that is older and more traditional. In the south chancel chapel is what has become known as the St Edmund bench end, attached to a modern bench. It appears to shows a wolf, with the Saint's head in its jaws. But a closer look shows that the beast has cloven hooves, and what are either wings and a collar or possibly eucharistic vestments. It is more likely related to those bench ends more common in east Norfolk depicting a mythical beast holding the head of St John the Baptist. There are squints through to the high altar from this chapel, so this was probably the site of a guild altar.

 

There are recent memories of the High Church past of St Mary. In the high sanctuary are not one but two plaques to former Dean Hugh Rose, one commemorating his conference that led to the Oxford Movement, and the other the centenary of that movement, laid by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1935. One of the plaques quotes Pusey's eulogy to Rose, that when hearts were failing, he bade us stir up the gift that was in us, and betake ourselves to our true mother. A Desperate Plea to Aunt Matilde

 

Clara and Elise stood stiffly in the grand sitting room of Aunt Matilde’s townhouse, their hands clasped in front of them, their posture unwavering despite the unbearable heat pressing against their layered clothing. The morning sun streamed in through the tall windows, casting golden light across the polished wooden floors, but instead of feeling warm and inviting, the air in the room was thick with tension.

 

Matilde sat before them in her perfectly tailored suit, her high-collared blouse as immaculate as ever. A cup of tea rested on the table beside her, untouched. She studied the two young women with a sharp, knowing gaze, already sensing the plea they were about to make.

 

Clara took a steadying breath. “Aunt Matilde,” she began, careful to keep her voice respectful, “Elise and I wanted to ask if we could make just a small adjustment to our attire today. It’s—” she hesitated, feeling the weight of Matilde’s cool stare, “—it’s very warm outside, and we thought perhaps—”

 

Elise, emboldened by Clara’s start, stepped in. “Perhaps we could just unbutton the top button of our blouses? Just for today? It would help us breathe more easily.”

 

Matilde set her teacup down with an audible clink and raised a single, disapproving eyebrow. “Unbutton your collars?” she repeated, her voice calm but laced with unmistakable disapproval.

 

Clara nodded quickly. “Yes, Aunt Matilde. Just the top button.” She swallowed, feeling the constriction of the fabric around her throat. “It’s a stifling summer day, and we’ll be walking quite a bit.”

 

Matilde exhaled slowly, as if the very notion exhausted her. “Clara, Elise,” she said, her tone measured, “there is a reason your collars are buttoned. A lady does not adjust her clothing merely for comfort. Elegance requires discipline, and discipline means enduring slight discomforts without complaint.”

 

Elise’s gloved hands clenched at her sides. “But Aunt Matilde, it’s not a slight discomfort—it’s suffocating! We can barely move our necks properly, and the heat—”

 

Matilde’s expression darkened. “You will not whine, Elise.”

 

Elise fell silent, pressing her painted lips together.

 

Clara tried again, shifting to another request. “Perhaps, then, we could at least take off our gloves? Just while we’re outside? Our hands get so warm, and it’s not as if we need them for anything formal today.”

 

Matilde sighed, shaking her head slightly. “Your gloves remain on.”

 

“But—” Elise tried again, but Matilde cut her off with a firm look.

 

“A proper lady does not go about with bare hands in public like some careless girl,” Matilde stated. “Your gloves complete your ensemble. You will wear them.”

 

Clara felt a sting of frustration but bit her tongue. She had expected resistance, but she was determined to try again. “What about our stockings?” she asked carefully. “It’s a dreadful day for heavy layers, Aunt Matilde, and no one will see—”

 

“Absolutely not,” Matilde interjected, her tone leaving no room for argument. “Stockings are non-negotiable. A lady’s legs must never be bare, regardless of the weather.”

 

Elise groaned softly, unable to hold back her exasperation. “But they’re unbearable! We’re already wearing long skirts. No one will see our bare legs!”

 

Matilde’s eyes narrowed. “And that, my dear, is exactly why no one should suspect that you are improperly dressed underneath. Your attire is a reflection of your standards, even in ways that are not immediately visible.”

 

Clara’s patience was wearing thin, but she forced herself to remain composed. “Aunt Matilde… we understand your rules, truly. We respect them. But just for today, given the circumstances—”

 

Matilde folded her arms across her chest. “Given the circumstances?” she echoed. “The circumstances being a warm summer’s day? Do you think women of refinement abandon their dignity just because the temperature rises?”

 

Elise muttered under her breath, “We wouldn’t be abandoning dignity. We’d just be a little less miserable.”

 

Matilde’s expression tightened. “Excuse me, young lady?”

 

Elise paled. “Nothing, Aunt Matilde.”

 

Matilde let the silence stretch before sighing. “I expected better from both of you. This conversation is unbecoming.” She took another sip of her tea before continuing, “If you wish to be taken seriously as proper young women, you must show resilience, not weakness. You will wear your gloves, your stockings, your buttoned blouses, and you will do so without further protest.”

 

Clara’s fingers twitched in frustration, but she knew pushing any further would only make things worse. She hesitated, then, almost fearing the answer, dared to ask one final question.

 

“Aunt Matilde… may we… would it be possible to wear trousers, instead of skirts?”

 

Matilde’s teacup stopped halfway to her lips. The very suggestion hung in the air like a forbidden curse. She placed the cup down slowly and fixed both girls with an icy glare.

 

“Trousers?” she repeated, as though testing the word on her tongue.

 

Elise straightened her posture but remained defiant. “Yes, Aunt Matilde. We don’t even own any, but we could buy a pair. Just for once. Just to see what it’s like.”

 

Matilde’s nostrils flared. “Absolutely not. The very idea is absurd.”

 

“But why?” Clara pressed. “Men wear them every day. They can walk freely, sit comfortably, and move without restriction. It’s unfair that we—”

 

Matilde cut her off with a sharp glance. “Men and women are not the same, Clara. And you will not dress like a man. I will not have my nieces traipsing about in such vulgar attire.”

 

Elise let out an incredulous laugh. “Vulgar? Trousers are vulgar?”

 

Matilde’s voice was razor-sharp. “On women, yes.”

 

Clara’s heart sank. They had lost.

 

Matilde picked up her tea again, signaling that the discussion was over. “You are both intelligent young women. I expect you to understand that propriety is not about convenience. It is about grace, discipline, and respectability.”

 

Clara and Elise exchanged a silent look. There was no winning this argument. No loosening of their collars, no relief from their gloves, no escape from the stockings that clung to their legs like a second skin.

 

Defeated, they murmured their acceptance, curtsied stiffly, and turned to leave the room. As they walked away, Matilde’s voice followed them, firm and unwavering.

 

“Now, go freshen up and reapply your lipstick. You both look fatigued, and that is not an acceptable appearance for a lady.”

 

The door closed behind them. Elise exhaled sharply, pressing her forehead against the wall. “I give up.”

 

Clara sighed, adjusting her suffocating collar. “So do I.”

 

And with that, they resigned themselves to yet another day of perfect, polished, and utterly uncomfortable elegance.

 

A Day of Elegance and Endurance

 

The sun was already high in the sky when Clara and Elise stepped out onto the bustling streets of New York. The city hummed with life—cars honked, pedestrians weaved through the sidewalks, and a warm breeze drifted between the towering buildings. But while the world around them moved freely, Clara and Elise felt anything but free.

 

Clara adjusted the cuffs of her crisp white blouse, the fabric pulled taut against her shoulders, refusing to give even as she tried to loosen it. The high collar, fastened all the way up, pressed against her throat, and though she tried to ignore it, the sensation of being constricted was ever-present. Elise, beside her, tugged at the fingers of her leather gloves, but even the small gesture was futile. The gloves were to stay on, just as their stockings, skirts, and perfectly buttoned blouses were non-negotiable.

 

"Where shall we go first?" Clara asked, forcing cheer into her voice.

 

Elise exhaled slowly, already feeling the sweat forming beneath her clothing. "Does it even matter? We could be strolling through paradise, and I'd still feel like I'm being suffocated by my own outfit."

 

Clara chuckled, though there was little amusement in it. "At least we look elegant," she offered.

 

Elise rolled her eyes. "Yes, we look like the epitome of refinement. But I’d trade all this elegance for just a moment of comfort."

A Walk Through the Park—A Struggle in Elegance

 

They decided to start their day in Central Park, hoping that the shade of the trees might bring some respite. But walking proved to be an ordeal. Their fitted skirts restricted their steps, forcing them into small, deliberate strides. Their high heels clicked against the pavement, adding an air of sophistication but punishing their feet with every step.

 

Elise let out a sigh of frustration. "I swear, if I trip on this ridiculous skirt one more time, I’ll scream."

 

Clara cast a sideways glance at her. "Careful, Aunt Matilde might sense your improper thoughts from across the city."

 

Elise scoffed, flexing her gloved fingers. "Oh yes, and she’d probably send a telegram ordering us to sit properly and compose ourselves immediately."

 

They found a bench beneath a large oak tree, hoping to rest, but even sitting was uncomfortable. Their skirts remained tight around their legs, and the stockings ensured that no cool air reached their skin. Clara shifted slightly, trying to find a more relaxed position, but her high collar made her posture rigid no matter what.

 

She sighed. "Even resting is exhausting in this outfit."

 

Elise reached up to unbutton the top of her blouse instinctively, but her gloved fingers struggled against the small, rigid buttons. Clara immediately grabbed her wrist. "Don’t. If Aunt Matilde somehow finds out, we’ll never hear the end of it."

 

Elise groaned in frustration but relented. "You know what I hate most?" she asked. "The fact that we could so easily find relief. If we could just loosen something—our collars, our gloves, anything—we'd be fine. But no, we must suffer for elegance."

 

Clara sighed, adjusting the stiff fabric of her blouse. "Aunt Matilde would say suffering builds character."

 

"Well, I’d rather be characterless and comfortable," Elise muttered.

Lunch in a Café—A Battle Against the Heat

 

By the time they reached a charming little café for lunch, the midday sun was merciless. The heat pressed against them, yet their clothing allowed for no relief. Their blouses, though pristine and starched, clung to their skin beneath the layers. Their stockings made their legs feel like they were trapped in an oven.

 

The moment they entered the café, the rush of cool, air-conditioned air was both a blessing and a cruel reminder of how unbearably hot they were. Elise sat down gingerly, careful not to wrinkle her skirt, while Clara tried once again to shift in her seat to find even the smallest amount of comfort.

 

The waiter arrived, smiling politely. "What can I get for you ladies?"

 

Clara forced a pleasant smile. "Just iced tea for me, please."

 

Elise, however, had other concerns. "Excuse me, sir, would it be terribly improper if we removed our gloves while we eat?" She held up her hands, fingers barely moving within the tight leather.

 

The waiter blinked, clearly caught off guard by such a formal question. "I… I don’t see why not?"

 

Elise’s eyes lit up in hope, but just as she was about to pull off her gloves, Clara placed a warning hand over hers. "Elise," she whispered, voice firm.

 

Elise groaned. "Clara, we’re inside, we’re sitting down, and he said it’s fine—"

 

"But Aunt Matilde wouldn't," Clara reminded her.

 

Elise exhaled sharply, her head tilting back in frustration. "You know what? I don’t even care anymore. Let the world judge me!"

 

Just as she slipped her fingers beneath the leather to pull off the gloves, the door to the café swung open.

 

A familiar, chilling voice cut through the air.

 

"Elise. Clara."

 

The girls froze. Slowly, they turned to see Aunt Matilde standing in the doorway, her posture as imposing as ever.

 

Elise’s hands dropped instantly, the gloves staying in place.

 

Clara, heart racing, quickly straightened her already-perfect posture.

 

Matilde strode toward them, her heels clicking in a way that sent shivers down their spines. She didn’t need to say anything. Her piercing gaze swept over them, noting every wrinkle, every sign of improper conduct.

 

"Not even a full day," she murmured disapprovingly, "and already you contemplate compromise?"

 

Elise clenched her jaw. "We were just trying to find some relief."

 

Matilde’s lips pressed together in disapproval. "Relief? And is dignity such a burden to you that you would abandon it so easily?"

 

Clara hurried to diffuse the tension. "Aunt Matilde, it’s just a warm day, and—"

 

"Enough," Matilde said coolly. "You will endure, as any proper lady should." She lifted her chin. "Now, sit up straight, adjust your gloves properly, and remember who you are."

 

Elise closed her eyes briefly, then opened them, defeated. "Yes, Aunt Matilde."

 

The rest of the meal passed in silence. The girls sipped their iced tea, their gloves remaining on, their collars pressing against their throats, their stockings ensuring their legs felt anything but free.

Evening—Resigned to Elegance

 

By the time the day ended, Clara and Elise collapsed onto the couch in their apartment. Their feet ached, their clothing felt like a prison, and yet… they had endured.

 

Elise let out a breath. "You know, I hate to admit it… but I suppose Aunt Matilde would be proud."

 

Clara smirked, unbuttoning her collar the second they were alone. "Proud or not, I’m sleeping in a nightgown so loose it might as well be a sheet."

 

Elise chuckled, slipping off her gloves at last. "Same. But you know… we did look stunning today."

 

Clara nodded. "We did. Even if we suffered for it."

 

And with that, they bid farewell to another day of restrained elegance, knowing that tomorrow would bring another battle between refinement and comfort.

The complex is a attractive mid-century take on the International Style. Kafkaesque rules keep it characterless.

From May 1956 until recently, this was the beating heart of regional telly in this part of the North West on the ITV network, but now all that has been transferred to the characterless and frankly unprepossessing Media City on the other side of the Irwell in Salford Quays - a venue shared by the BBC, who also broadcast from the iconic (and should never have been closed) Television Centre. Anyway. this was Quay Street Studios, home to a television station named by founder Leonard Bernstein after his favourite place - the Sierra Granada mountain range in the Andalusia region (pronounced 'Andaloothia') of Spain.

 

"What Manchester sees today London will see tomorrow" was his proud boast in the year when Britain and France invaded Suez, only for America to tell them to get out of there. Because it wasn't a war they started, they had to get jealous but I digress.

 

This was also where Richard Madeley (big, BIG fan of Tesco!) met Judy Finnegan who cheerfully told him on his first day at the station back in 1982 that she 'was his mummy' and, let's face it, the years haven't exactly been kind to her!

 

Of course, I should really have taken a few photos of this in the past when it was an active TV studios but what spurred me into action was Peter Kay's tribute to the station Goodbye Granadaland and that was a week before I took these shots. Why a week you may ask? Well, because I forgot to charge my camera battery the night before I first went (June 16), I had to make do with the camera on an old mobile phone. I only took a few photos with that because I was used to MY camera. Anyway, long story short, as soon as I got home that day, I put the battery on charge and it was ready the following week. This shot, taken at the back of the studios from Atherton Street, is of the top of the office block and you can just about make out where the big letters proclaiming 'GRANADA TV' would have been. Because they were so high up, I think that getting them off would have been a bit of a mission and not one for those with a fear of heights.

 

Oh yeah, you may be wondering how the title came about. Well, years ago when the telly started at half nine in the am, they were the words you would have heard uttered in the dulcet tones of Graham James or whoever was announcer that day.

 

Showing my age, aren't I? But hey, I don't give a fuck!

St Mary, Hadleigh, Suffolk

 

Hadleigh is a pleasant, self-important little town. It is one of those places remote enough to be a microcosm of bigger towns - the factories, shops and housing estates all to scale. Its centrality in this part of Suffolk gave it the headquarters of Babergh District Council in 1974, despite the fact that the greater part of the population of the district lives in the Sudbury conurbation and the southern suburbs of Ipswich. Having said that, Hadleigh has expanded greatly in recent years, with characterless new estates now lining the bypass, and in any case Babergh District Council has since merged with Mid-Suffolk District Council and the councillors have all toddled off to Stowmarket. But the heart of the town is still probably the loveliest of any in East Anglia.

 

If Hadleigh is small, however, St Mary is not. This is one of the grand Suffolk churches, the only big one with a medieval spire which is also the only proper wood and lead spire in the county. There are echoes of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, only without the twist. It was built in the 14th century, and the exterior bell, a 1280 clock bell doubling as a sanctus bell, is Suffolk's oldest. The aisles, clerestory and chancel head eastwards of it, equalling Lavenham in their sense of the substantial. It is one of the longest churches in Suffolk.

 

To the south west of the church stands the famous Hadleigh Deanery, more properly the gorgeous red brick Tudor gateway to the now demolished medieval Deanery. It was at this Deanery gateway in July 1833 that the meeting was held which gave birth to the Oxford Movement, and went on to change the face of Anglican churches forever. It is no exaggeration to say that the modern Church of England was born in this building. The Rector here, in one of those anachronisms so beloved of the CofE, is styled 'Dean of Bocking'. Bocking is a village in Essex, and the living is in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, so Hadleigh Rectors are installed in Canterbury Cathedral.

 

The south side of the graveyard is taken up by the former guild hall, and on the fourth side there is a scattering of excellent 18th and 19th century municipal and commercial buildings. With the possible exception of the Bury churches, it is the best setting of any urban church in Suffolk. Hadleigh was one of the great cloth towns, a centre for merchants rather than factories (most of the work was farmed out to self-employed weavers in nearby villages, quite literally a cottage industry). The wealth of those days rebuilt the church, particularly the fine 15th century clerestory and aisles.This is a big church, since it needed to contain the chantry altars of at least five medieval guilds. And it has always been an urban church, as you can tell from the way buildings on the north side cut into it. The east window was clearly always intended to be seen up the gap to the busy High Street.

 

The magnificent south doorway retains its original 15th century doors. It is interesting to compare it with Cotton, barely 50 years older, but from a quite different generation of architecture. Gone are the delicate fleurons, the articulate details that speak of an internal sense of mystery. Here, we enter the realms of self-confident rationalism for the first time. You step into a space that is light and airy, so vast that at once it swallows sound, a feeling accentuated by the sheer width of the chancel arch. Trees close by on the north side gently wave shadows into the nave. It feels that the church is organically part of the town and has been so down the long centuries, although perhaps it is hard at first to see this building as anything other than the rather polite CofE parish church it has become.

 

If you'd been here some ten years or so ago, you might have though that this was a very strange church, for there was the surreal sight of a snooker table and a pool table in the north aisle. They were part of what was called the Hadleigh Porch Project, an attempt to provide something to do for teenagers in the town who had been causing a nuisance in the churchyard and porch. The parish galvanised itself and attracted funding, and the building became used by young people for secular activities, one idea being that the sense of ownership conveyed would give them a sense of responsibility. Coming here in Lent of 2013, I was struck by the Stations of the Cross lining the arcades, each created by a local youth group or organisation. They were radically different from anything I'd seen before, and I'm sure that Maggi Hambling's Christ, looking on from the north aisle, would have approved.

 

Coming back in 2019, the snooker and pool tables have now gone, and so have the run of the mill Victorian benches that filled the nave. Regular users of this site will know that I am an enthusiast of replacing 19th Century pews with modern chairs in medieval churches, but here you can't help feeling that it hasn't really been done very well. The chairs themselves are not the problem so much as the floor, which has been left with expanses of floor boards between the lines of poor encaustic tiles. Perhaps there are plans to replace all of this with a polished wood and pamment floor (Oundle in Northamptonshire is a good example on a similar scale). I hope so.

 

The sheer size of the nave and its aisles stops the stained glass overwhelming it, which is a relief because there is a lot of it and it is by no means all good. To start with the best, there is a 1988 window by John O'Connor for Chapel Studios beside Maggi Hambling's painting, a memorial to John Belton, a former rector. But the glass in the south aisle is mostly by Ward & Hughes, and some of it very poor indeed, from the height of that period when Thomas Curtis was trashing the brand.

 

Of course, there is much here that is older and more traditional. In the south chancel chapel is what has become known as the St Edmund bench end, attached to a modern bench. It appears to shows a wolf, with the Saint's head in its jaws. But a closer look shows that the beast has cloven hooves, and what are either wings and a collar or possibly eucharistic vestments. It is more likely related to those bench ends more common in east Norfolk depicting a mythical beast holding the head of St John the Baptist. There are squints through to the high altar from this chapel, so this was probably the site of a guild altar.

 

There are recent memories of the High Church past of St Mary. In the high sanctuary are not one but two plaques to former Dean Hugh Rose, one commemorating his conference that led to the Oxford Movement, and the other the centenary of that movement, laid by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1935. One of the plaques quotes Pusey's eulogy to Rose, that when hearts were failing, he bade us stir up the gift that was in us, and betake ourselves to our true mother. Another religious figure associated with Hadleigh is the puritan preacher Rowland Taylor, who was burned at the stake on nearby Aldham Common in the brief but unhappy reign of Mary I. One of the Ward & Hughes windows in the south aisle remembers him.

 

Up in the chancel, grinning figures peer down from the roof, and in the east window of the north chancel aisle is a small collection of old glass, including heraldic shields, a Tudor royal arms and haunting fragments of 15th Century English glass, all that survives of what must once have been one of the largest expanses in England, a sobering thought.

This is the true Wythenshawe I know and love, the small green hill and the two iconic tower blocks that were Park Cort (left) and Violet Court (partialy facing this view), and in the background an unidentified Manchester Standard bus (think it's an Olympian) in the good old GM Buses livery.

This area where this shot was taken is now completly cordoned off, the two flats were abandoned in June 2004 and in early 2007 they were demolished, plans are currently in place to put some characterless retail stores within the next year or so! :(

The south side of the graveyard is taken up by the former guild hall, and on the fourth side there is a scattering of excellent 18th and 19th century municipal and commercial buildings. With the possible exception of the Bury churches, it is the best setting of any urban church in Suffolk. Hadleigh was one of the great cloth towns, a centre for merchants rather than factories (most of the work was farmed out to self-employed weavers in nearby villages, quite literally a cottage industry). The wealth of those days rebuilt the church, particularly the fine 15th century clerestory and aisles.This is a big church, since it needed to contain the chantry altars of at least five medieval guilds. And it has always been an urban church, as you can tell from the way buildings on the north side cut into it. Regular users of this site will know that I am an enthusiast of replacing 19th Century pews with modern chairs in medieval churches, but here you can't help feeling that it hasn't really been done very well. The chairs themselves are not the problem so much as the floor, which has been left with expanses of floor boards between the lines of poor encaustic tiles. Perhaps there are plans to replace all of this with a polished wood and pamment floor (Oundle in Northamptonshire is a good example on a similar scale). I hope so.

4 or more Class 26s could be had on this move. If the trains to and from the far north were double headed you may even have 6 if you were lucky. The move was.

06.35 Inverness to Wick/Thurso to Dingwall where you could be very quick and get down to the bakery for food supplies. The 06.55 Inverness to The Kyle of lochalsh could then be taken to Achnasheen where in passed the first incoming service from The Kyle. There was never an issue about missing the train as they crossed on the passing loop at Achnasheen station and this always took five minutes or more. Back to Dingwall or The Muir of Ord and returning back into Inverness on the first train in from the far north. My father used to love this move and even went so far as to name his home ''Achnasheen''. In 1986 when the 37s had taken over on this line my father satisfied a bashing ambition of his to stay over at the Achnasheen station hotel. In later years the hotel burnt down and now the line is plastic buses. The mountains and wilderness are still there but the trains are featureless and characterless like most of todays railway.

If Hadleigh is small, however, St Mary is not. This is one of the grand Suffolk churches, the only big one with a medieval spire which is also the only proper wood and lead spire in the county. There are echoes of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, only without the twist. It was built in the 14th century, and the exterior bell, a 1280 clock bell doubling as a sanctus bell, is Suffolk's oldest. The aisles, clerestory and chancel head eastwards of it, equalling Lavenham in their sense of the substantial. It is one of the longest churches in Suffolk.

 

To the south west of the church stands the famous Hadleigh Deanery, more properly the gorgeous red brick Tudor gateway to the now demolished medieval Deanery. It was at this Deanery gateway in July 1833 that the meeting was held which gave birth to the Oxford Movement, and went on to change the face of Anglican churches forever. It is no exaggeration to say that the modern Church of England was born in this building. The Rector here, in one of those anachronisms so beloved of the CofE, is styled 'Dean of Bocking'. Bocking is a village in Essex, and the living is in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, so Hadleigh Rectors are installed in Canterbury Cathedral.

 

The south side of the graveyard is taken up by the former guild hall, and on the fourth side there is a scattering of excellent 18th and 19th century municipal and commercial buildings. With the possible exception of the Bury churches, it is the best setting of any urban church in Suffolk. Hadleigh was one of the great cloth towns, a centre for merchants rather than factories (most of the work was farmed out to self-employed weavers in nearby villages, quite literally a cottage industry). The wealth of those days rebuilt the church, particularly the fine 15th century clerestory and aisles.This is a big church, since it needed to contain the chantry altars of at least five medieval guilds. And it has always been an urban church, as you can tell from the way buildings on the north side cut into it. The east window was clearly always intended to be seen up the gap to the busy High Street.

 

The magnificent south doorway retains its original 15th century doors. It is interesting to compare it with Cotton, barely 50 years older, but from a quite different generation of architecture. Gone are the delicate fleurons, the articulate details that speak of an internal sense of mystery. Here, we enter the realms of self-confident rationalism for the first time. You step into a space that is light and airy, so vast that at once it swallows sound, a feeling accentuated by the sheer width of the chancel arch. Trees close by on the north side gently wave shadows into the nave. It feels that the church is organically part of the town and has been so down the long centuries, although perhaps it is hard at first to see this building as anything other than the rather polite CofE parish church it has become.

 

If you'd been here some ten years or so ago, you might have though that this was a very strange church, for there was the surreal sight of a snooker table and a pool table in the north aisle. They were part of what was called the Hadleigh Porch Project, an attempt to provide something to do for teenagers in the town who had been causing a nuisance in the churchyard and porch. The parish galvanised itself and attracted funding, and the building became used by young people for secular activities, one idea being that the sense of ownership conveyed would give them a sense of responsibility. Coming here in Lent of 2013, I was struck by the Stations of the Cross lining the arcades, each created by a local youth group or organisation. They were radically different from anything I'd seen before, and I'm sure that Maggi Hambling's Christ, looking on from the north aisle, would have approved.

 

Coming back in 2019, the snooker and pool tables have now gone, and so have the run of the mill Victorian benches that filled the nave. Regular users of this site will know that I am an enthusiast of replacing 19th Century pews with modern chairs in medieval churches, but here you can't help feeling that it hasn't really been done very well. The chairs themselves are not the problem so much as the floor, which has been left with expanses of floor boards between the lines of poor encaustic tiles. Perhaps there are plans to replace all of this with a polished wood and pamment floor (Oundle in Northamptonshire is a good example on a similar scale). I hope so.

 

The sheer size of the nave and its aisles stops the stained glass overwhelming it, which is a relief because there is a lot of it and it is by no means all good. To start with the best, there is a 1988 window by John O'Connor for Chapel Studios beside Maggi Hambling's painting, a memorial to John Belton, a former rector. But the glass in the south aisle is mostly by Ward & Hughes, and some of it very poor indeed, from the height of that period when Thomas Curtis was trashing the brand.

 

Of course, there is much here that is older and more traditional. In the south chancel chapel is what has become known as the St Edmund bench end, attached to a modern bench. It appears to shows a wolf, with the Saint's head in its jaws. But a closer look shows that the beast has cloven hooves, and what are either wings and a collar or possibly eucharistic vestments. It is more likely related to those bench ends more common in east Norfolk depicting a mythical beast holding the head of St John the Baptist. There are squints through to the high altar from this chapel, so this was probably the site of a guild altar.

 

There are recent memories of the High Church past of St Mary. In the high sanctuary are not one but two plaques to former Dean Hugh Rose, one commemorating his conference that led to the Oxford Movement, and the other the centenary of that movement, laid by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1935. One of the plaques quotes Pusey's eulogy to Rose, that when hearts were failing, he bade us stir up the gift that was in us, and betake ourselves to our true mother. Another religious figure associated with Hadleigh is the puritan preacher Rowland Taylor, who was burned at the stake on nearby Aldham Common in the brief but unhappy reign of Mary I. One of the Ward & Hughes windows in the south aisle remembers him.

 

Up in the chancel, grinning figures peer down from the roof, and in the east window of the north chancel aisle is a small collection of old glass, including heraldic shields, a Tudor royal arms and haunting fragments of 15th Century English glass, all that survives of what must once have been one of the largest expanses in England, a sobering thought.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - May 16, 1930

 

92 years ago today, Indio California became the first city in the Coachella Valley to become incorporated.

 

On December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor was attacked and in the spring of 1942, downtown Indio, CA was invaded - not by our enemies, but from servicemen at nearby Camp Young.

 

The U.S. Army established the Desert Training Center (DTC), just 30 miles east of Indio, to prepare soldiers for the harsh desert conditions that they would be facing fighting the German Army in North Africa.

 

Major General Patton came to Camp Young as the first commanding general of the DTC. Patton, a native of Southern California, knew the area well from his youth and from having participated in army maneuvers in the Mojave Desert in the 1930s.

 

General Patton, who tried to lessen the impact of his troops’ presence on the city, was active in Indio’s civic affairs during his time at the DTC. On May 25, 1942 Patton gave a Memorial Day address to the citizens of Indio and he also used the Hotel Indio as a frequent meeting place.

 

When the troop members were on leave from their hot dirty tents at Camp Young, they headed to Indio for the air-conditioned comfort of the Hotel Indio.

 

The “new and modern” 80-room Hotel Indio was built in the mid-1920’s by the Von der Ahe family, who went on to establish the Von’s grocery store chain.

 

By 1925, Indio was thriving as the headquarters for the Southern Pacific Railroad and in 1933 the Colorado River Aqueduct project brought workers to Indio’s bars and hotels. The aqueduct project was very good for business at the Hotel Indio.

 

The Hotel Indio, “An Enchanting Desert Oasis”, which once stood pridefully at the SW corner of Miles Avenue and Smurr Street was destroyed by fire. The inferno took 17 CalFire companies and over 50 firefighters to extinguish the blaze which could be seen throughout the Coachella Valley.

 

Today this property is a characterless grassy park, with no acknowledgment to its historic past except for the palm trees that once towered majestically in the Hotel Indio’s courtyard entrance.

Coming here in Lent of 2013, I was struck by the Stations of the Cross lining the arcades, each created by a local youth group or organisation. They were radically different from anything I'd seen before, and I'm sure that Maggi Hambling's Christ, looking on from the north aisle, would have approved.

It needs to be said that the post Wende redevelopment of Wilsdruffer Strasse is a disgrace. Three unusual and interesting buildings (Cafe am Zwinger, Linde Haus and the former Warenhaus Knoop) have been demolished and replaced with the most banal office blocks. These could be knocked down tomorrow without a whisper of protest from anyone. The Warenhaus Knoop has been sacrificed for yet another entry to the voracious Altstadt Gallery in which, architecturally speaking, you could be in any city in the world.

The sun was shining brightly, and it was with utter joy that I whooped along until descending steeply into Sherborne.

They were radically different from anything I'd seen before, and I'm sure that Maggi Hambling's Christ, looking on from the north aisle, would have approved.

 

Coming back in 2019, the snooker and pool tables have now gone, and so have the run of the mill Victorian benches that filled the nave. Regular users of this site will know that I am an enthusiast of replacing 19th Century pews with modern chairs in medieval churches, but here you can't help feeling that it hasn't really been done very well. The chairs themselves are not the problem so much as the floor, which has been left with expanses of floor boards between the lines of poor encaustic tiles. Perhaps there are plans to replace all of this with a polished wood and pamment floor (Oundle in Northamptonshire is a good example on a similar scale). I hope so.

 

The sheer size of the nave and its aisles stops the stained glass overwhelming it, which is a relief because there is a lot of it and it is by no means all good. To start with the best, there is a 1988 window by John O'Connor for Chapel Studios beside Maggi Hambling's painting, a memorial to John Belton, a former rector. But the glass in the south aisle is mostly by Ward & Hughes, and some of it very poor indeed, from the height of that period when Thomas Curtis was trashing the brand.

 

Of course, there is much here that is older and more traditional. In the south chancel chapel is what has become known as the St Edmund bench end, attached to a modern bench. It appears to shows a wolf, with the Saint's head in its jaws. But a closer look shows that the beast has cloven hooves, and what are either wings and a collar or possibly eucharistic vestments. It is more likely related to those bench ends more common in east Norfolk depicting a mythical beast holding the head of St John the Baptist. There are squints through to the high altar from this chapel, so this was probably the site of a guild altar.

 

There are recent memories of the High Church past of St Mary. In the high sanctuary are not one but two plaques to former Dean Hugh Rose, one commemorating his conference that led to the Oxford Movement, and the other the centenary of that movement, laid by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1935. One of the plaques quotes Pusey's eulogy to Rose, that when hearts were failing, he bade us stir up the gift that was in us, and betake ourselves to our true mother. Another religious figure associated with Hadleigh is the puritan preacher Rowland Taylor, who was burned at the stake on nearby Aldham Common in the brief but unhappy reign of Mary I. One of the Ward & Hughes windows in the south aisle remembers him.

 

Up in the chancel, grinning figures peer down from the roof, and in the east window of the north chancel aisle is a small collection of old glass, including heraldic shields, a Tudor royal arms and haunting fragments of 15th Century English glass, all that survives of what must once have been one of the largest expanses in England, a sobering thought.
