The girl on the right is dancing for the first time and not very sure of her steps. She keeps looking at the little one in the middle, who is nearest to her in age. Her costume wasn't ready, so she's wearing an older version.

24th Annual Chariot festival of Sri Mayurapathy Paththirakaali temple is held today (6th of August 2011) in Colombo amidst heavy downpour. Five wooden carved chariots parade through the streets of Bambalapitty (Colombo 04), Havelock Town (Colombo 05) and Wellawatte (Colombo 06).
Devotees dressed elegantly and took part in religious rituals such as carrying clay pots of camphor, rolling themselves on the ground, smashing coconuts and hanging on hooks (Kaavadi ~ Men only). Few devotees who fulfill their vows, got into trance and danced on the streets. Devotional songs played throughout the dazzling parade. Traditional and non ~ traditional musical instruments added colour to the festival.
The head priest of Jhula Devi chanting shlokas. He was half singing and half chanting. We sat there for sometime listening to him while the evening faded. It was a good feeling.

The (southern) pale chanting goshawk (Melierax canorus) is a bird of prey in the family Accipitridae. This hawk breeds in southern Africa. It is a resident species of dry, open semi-desert with 75 cm or less annual rainfall. It is commonly seen perched on roadside telephone poles.
This species is 56–65 cm long. The adult has grey upperparts with a white rump. The central tail feathers are black tipped with white, and the outer feathers are barred grey and white. The head and upper breast are pale grey; the rest of the underparts are finely barred in dark grey and white. Its eyes are yellow, the bill is mostly orange, and it has long orange legs. It is paler than the grey-rumped dark chanting goshawk, Melierax metabates.
In flight, the adult has black primary flight feathers, very pale grey (white from a distance) secondaries, and grey forewings. The wingspan is about 105 cm.
Immatures have brown upperparts, with a white rump and black bars on the tail. From below, the flight feathers and tail are white with black barring, the throat is dark-streaked white, and the rest of the underparts are rufous.
The pale chanting goshawk eats a variety of vertebrate prey, mainly lizards, but also small mammals and birds, and large insects. It often walks on the ground.
This is generally a rather quiet bird, but during the breeding season the male makes a series of tuneful whistling calls kleeuu, kleeuu-ku-ku-ku from a tree-top perch.
Normally a female mates with a single male, but in "broken veld" vegetation, a female and two males may form a polyandrous trio.
The relatively small stick nest is built in an acacia at a height of 3 to 10 m. The female lays and incubates one or two pale bluish or greenish white, unmarked eggs. Only one chick is normally reared from a nest of two. The breeding cycle begins in midwinter and takes over 115 days. The young after leaving the nest may be found near it for some months and in the following year may even display in the same area. Some pairs and especially trios raise a second brood, starting about 24 days after the first brood fledges.

A swing around the room as the chanters have just finished singing Gregorian and are setting up to sing a little Georgian chant (Georgian or Croatian).

- usually, the handle is just a stick that is pulled down to get the coffee to come down, under pressure. that is why they describe the coffee as coming out it pulls, even now, with electrically driven 'pulls'.
- (sort of like we still say we 'hang up' the phone, when the hook went away long ago.)

Dozens rallied on the steps of the Clocktower Building yesterday pushing for student and staff representation on university councils.
Under the Education Amendment Act, which came into force last month, the size of university councils is decreased from 12 to 20 members to eight to 12 members and mandatory staff, student and union membership of councils is removed.
About 50 people joined New Zealand Union of Students' Associations president Rory McCourt and Tertiary Education Union national president Sandra Grey in protesting the changes and pushing for student and staff representation.
Dr Grey said the protest marked the launch of a national campaign to ensure staff and student representation on student councils was enshrined in a constitution.
Under the Act, tertiary education providers have to write new governing constitutions which detail council membership and representation.
Dr Grey said the union was pushing for one-third of all councils to be student and staff representatives.
''We are determined to keep working to get the Act changed but in the meantime we are working to get the best we can and the best we can is that a third of representatives are democratically elected students and staff, not appointed,'' she said.
Mr McCourt said students and staff were needed to ensure the universities were ''asking the big questions that universities exist to ask''.
''The importance of this cannot be overstated in the context of a ministerial power-grab.''
Labour Party tertiary education spokesman David Cunliffe yesterday introduced a member's Bill into the ballot supporting NZUSA and TEU.
The Education (Restoration of Democracy to University Councils) Amendment Bill seeks to restore student and staff participation in university councils.

« l’Antarctique est un livre et nous marchons dessus » Tanguy Viel
Chant d’hiver est une plongée musicale et scénique dans la nuit polaire antarctique, portée par un récit librement inspiré d’une mission scientifique du glaciologue Claude Lorius en 1984, au cours de laquelle le carottage de la glace et son analyse chimique révélèrent les premières preuves de l’influence de l’activité humaine sur les changements climatiques.
Dans ce récit, écrit par Tanguy Viel et mis en musique et en scène par Samuel Sighicelli, surgissent en filigrane des lieder empruntés au Voyage d’hiver de Schubert. La vision romantique du monde en tant que « grande âme » et l’appréhension scientifique actuelle de la Terre peuvent se rencontrer à un endroit, peut-être que cet endroit est tout au bout du monde, dans la nuit et le froid, là où le sol glacé livre ses secrets ancestraux.
Un homme – à la fois le glaciologue en mission et le voyageur de Schubert – se débat dans le froid : la musique créée ici est alternativement le paysage dans lequel il évolue et l’expression de ce qu’il vit physiquement et intérieurement.
La partition est portée par deux musiciennes (piano, voix et contrebasse) et un comédien, dans un dispositif sonore et visuel, où les interactions entre texte, lumière, son et vidéo dessinent une polyphonie sensorielle dans laquelle les emprunts à Schubert trouvent une place singulière, aux confins de la musique, comme nous parvenant de très loin dans la tempête.
