Trenton Channel Power Plant. The stacks are red and white striped. However, the colour version was just to distracting. As a child, I toured this power plant including the old low pressure boiler house which was to the left. It had venturi shaped stacks.

The Postcard
A postally unused Valentine's Series postcard. The image is a glossy real photograph. The card, which has a divided back, was printed in Great Britain.
The top left corner indicates that the card has been taken from an album.

Valentine & Sons were a major postcard publisher of Dundee and London. The Valentine Company, a lithographic printing firm, was founded in 1825 in Dundee, Scotland by John Valentine.
His son James became an early pioneer of photography, and by the 1860’s his work was being reproduced by the Valentine Company as prints and stereo-views.
After James’ death in 1879, his two sons, George Dobson and William Dobson took over the Company, but in 1884 George moved to New Zealand where he became a landscape photographer.
In 1880 Valentine began producing Christmas cards, and by 1896 they began printing postcards. Up until 1882 they had only published views of Scotland, but they began expanding into other tourist markets.
Other offices opened in Jamaica, Madeira, Norway, Tangier, Canada, and New York. They produced a great range of view-cards that were mostly printed in Scotland in tinted halftone lithography or issued as real photo cards.
In addition they produced a vast array of other products that held photographic images. All interests outside of Great Britain were sold in 1923. By 1929 they had given up their photo portraiture work to concentrate solely on postcard production.
However they did not anticipate the public’s growing demand for colour cards, and by the 1950’s their business was suffering. In response they put most of their efforts into greetings cards.
They were purchased by John Waddington & Co. in 1963, which passed on to Hallmark Cards in 1980. Dundee operations closed in 1994.
Barnstaple
Barnstaple is a river-port town in North Devon at the lowest crossing point of the River Taw flowing into the Bristol Channel. From the 14th. century, it was licensed to export wool, and great wealth ensued.
Later it imported Irish wool, but its harbour silted up, and other industries developed, such as shipbuilding, foundries and sawmills.
A Victorian market building survives, with a high glass and timber roof on iron columns. The parish had a population of 24,033 at the 2011 census.
The Albert Clock, Barnstaple
The Albert Clock is a clock tower memorial in Barnstaple in Devon to Albert, Prince Consort, the husband of Queen Victoria. It has been listed Grade II since 1988.
Located in The Square in Barnstaple, the tower was built in 1862 at the suggestion of the then-Mayor of Barnstaple, John Norrington, following the death of Prince Albert in the previous year.
The tower was paid for by public subscription, with some of the money being raised for the provision of a drinking fountain. The original design was for a tower without a clock.
At its dedication ceremony in 1862, surrounded by local dignitaries, the clock's pendulum was set to swing at 11.00 p.m., the hour Prince Albert had died. At the same time the water started to flow from the fountain.
As Mayor Norrington, a teetotaller, stepped forward to take the first drink from the fountain, a man threw a cupful of what was found to be gin into the water. Norrington was outraged at this indignity to himself, to the Queen and to the memory of Prince Albert.
An investigation revealed that the mystery man was John Baker, the landlord of the Mermaid Inn and a local Tory councillor.
Designed by local architect Richard Davie Gould (1816 - 1900), the tower is constructed of limestone with dressings of Devon marble and sandstone together with other local stones and patterned tiles.
The tower has an octagonal shaft on a broader octagonal base surmounted with a square and corbelled clock chamber with a clock-dial in each face. The summit consists of a small belfry with a leaded spire and weather-vane. The bell is still inside.
The tower's base has a stair doorway on the South side, while on the North side is a water-trough. At the back of the recess is a panel of coloured tiles with a coat of arms in white marble above it. The drinking fountain, given by Sir William Fraser, MP, has been removed.
On the East and West sides are pointed arches of moulded red sandstone with above an arch of different coloured local stones. Within the arches are commemorative marble plaques to Prince Albert.
The Albert Clock Tower was restored in 2009 with funding from Barnstaple Town Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
14 tansistor AM/FM. I picked this one up at an estate sale. There were lots of tube sets, but they were all priced too high. Of the few transistor sets, this one caught my eye, and was only $5. I rarely see any transistor sets in decent condition.
The battery case had several dates from the '70s and '80s written on it from when the batteries were changed, and the last date was in 1994, and the batteries looked that old. With new batteries in, it works pretty well!
In the 19th Century, serious proposals were beginning to arise on both sides of the channel for a tunnel linking England and France together. The attempts on the English side were unsuccessful, mostly due to the tunnels flooding. This is one of two test bores, the other in 1881 at Shakespeare cliff. The tunnel was expected to be completed by 1886 however only 2 years on from the initial bore in 1880, very little progress had been made and the whole project was cast aside and abandoned in 1898. The British Government had decided a tunnel linking England to Europe left the country vulnerable to attack.

Infrared image taken at Dovedale - White Peak. Peak District. Series of 3 identical shots with 3 different types of IR processing. Version 2.
This is shot is version 1 with the colour channels swapped around, so Red channel has red set to 0 and blue set to 100 and the blue channel has red set to 100 and blue set to 0. A seperate layer was used to alter the vibrance and saturations levels (0 and 100 respectivley)
Finally, the day of the leadership ballot for the federal Labour Party has arrived and with it came the now familiar TV news broadcasters along Oxford Street. Today's pictures feature the Channel 7 crew.

i channeled an old italian lady this morning - perhaps my great-grandmother? - and had bread dough rising by 6:30 and meatballs made and sunday gravy simmering by 8:30. now i'm smoking cigarettes and watching soap operas. up next is recovering the couches with plastic.

The Channel Chieftain VI is an aluminium catamaran which is also used for transfers as well as being used for refuelling on offshore wind farms and guard duties.

Departure from the local tourist dock, crossing Usuahia`s wide bay, to reach the Beagle Channel through Paso Chico.
There we will sail around Isla de Los Pájaros (Bird island) and Isla de los Lobos (Sea Lions island), where we will observe Skuas, Black Browed Albatross, Steamer Ducks, Cauquenes, Kelp gulls, Grey gulls, Sea Lions one and two hairs.
Both islands belong to the Bridges Archipelago.
Upon arrival at Faro Les Eclaireur (The Iluminators lighthouse), we will be able to see Shags and Cormorant colonies and also share the history of the SS Monte Cervantes Cruise which sank in 1930.
We will continue sailing East enjoying the exquisite scenery of the channel and the surrounding mountains, we will catch sight on the coast of Argentina, Puerto Almanza and on the coast of Chile, Naval Base Puerto Williams. There we will get to Isla Martillo (Hammer Island) where we will have the opportunity to see a colony of Magallanicos Penguins and some specimens of Papua Penguins.
When we reach Estancia Harberton we will take a guided tour. We will arrive approximately at 12 pm. The excursion takes about 3 hours, enjoying the first Natural Reserve in Tierra del Fuego, the shearing shed, the carpentry, the boat house and the main house garden. You can enjoy Manacatush Tea and visit the Birds and Austral Acatushun Marine Mammals Museum. (Tickets for Museum visit are not included).
