The high altitude valley with magnificent peaks and Chandra river accompanying....taken near Batal, HImachal Pradesh, India

It was my birthday last week - no you don't need to know how old I am, let's just agree that I'm old enough to know better. I was gifted some glorious things from my beloved friends and one cheeky sister in SL. Zaara Kohime gifted me the set of her Surya and Chandra earrings, now at C88. These are a continuation of her Shairi collection.

They come with a chain that goes up to a bun and you can see that here on Zaara's stream however I have what Aussies call a big boofhead, and for that to fit me I would have had to resize them to the point where they'd look like hubcaps.

Chandra Mahal is essentially regarded as the best part, out of the whole tour to City Palace. It has seven stories and each story is known by a different name. The topmost story is known as Mukut Mahal. The wonderful architecture of this Palace with delicate paintings, mirror work on walls and floral decorations, makes it a "must-see" for every visitor. In the present day, this palace serves as the residence of ex-ruler.

...(meaning the Lake of the Moon) is situated in Spiti Valley, India. The name of the lake originates from its crescent shape. It is situated at an altitude of about 4,300 metres (14,100 ft) in the Himalayas.

Sephisa chandra subsp. androdamas Fruhstorfer, 1908

Etymology:

An afternoon with the beautiful Chandra.

Chandra Taal or Lake of the Moon is a lake in the Spiti part of Lahaul & Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh near the high altitude Kunzam Pass.It is situated at an altitude of 14100 feet above sea level. It gets its name from its crescent shape. It is situated on Samudra Tapu Plateau overlooking the Chandra River. There is no visible source of the lake but there is an outlet and the source is probably underground.

I could have probably got better shots of the lake if I had gone down to its shore. However we had reached the lake after a tiring journey of about 6 hours over very bad roads and we had to walk for about half a kilometer from where we had parked our vehicle to reach this spot.It might not sound much but try walking uphill at an altitude of 14000 feet and you will understand why i satisfied myself with these shots instead of going down to the lake.:-)

...at least, that's what it looks like from this perspective... :)

Using data from NASA’s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), international researchers have uncovered new information about the Tycho supernova remnant, an exploded star in the constellation Cassiopeia, the light from which was first seen on Earth in 1572. The results offer new clues about how shock waves created by these titanic stellar explosions accelerate particles to nearly the speed of light, and reveal, for the first time, the geometry of the magnetic fields close to the supernova’s blast wave, which forms a boundary around the ejected material, as seen in this composite image. IXPE data (dark purple and white) have been combined with data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory (red and blue) and overlaid with the stars in the field of view as captured by the Digitized Sky Survey.

As reported in a single Chinese record, the supernova of 185 AD was visible for at least 8 months and reached a brightness comparable to Mars. In 2007, optical, radio, and X-ray emission observed at a location consistent with the Chinese record make RCW 86 the prime candidate for the remnant of SN 185 AD. Combined images from the Chandra (upper left and lower right boxes) and XMM-Newton X-ray observatories show low, medium and high-energy X-rays in red, green, and blue respectively. By studying the distribution of X-rays with energy, and measuring the remnant's size, scientists now surmise that RCW 86 was created by the explosion of a massive star roughly 2,000 years ago.

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has observed the supernova remnant named 1E 0102.2-7219. Researchers are using Hubble’s imagery of the remnant object to wind back the clock on the expanding remains of this exploded star in the hope of understanding the supernova event that caused it 1700 years ago.

The featured star that exploded long ago belongs to the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way located roughly 200 000 light-years away. The doomed star left behind an expanding, gaseous corpse — a supernova remnant — known as 1E 0102.2-7219.

Because the gaseous knots in this supernova remnant are moving at different speeds and directions from the supernova explosion, those moving toward Earth are coloured blue in this composition and the ones moving away are shown in red. This new Hubble image shows these ribbons of gas speeding away from the explosion site at an average speed of 3.2 million kilometres per hour. At that speed, you could travel to the Moon and back in 15 minutes.

Researchers have studied the Hubble archive looking for visible-light images of the supernova remnant and they have analysed the data to calculate a more accurate estimate of the age and centre of the supernova blast.

According to their new estimates, light from this blast arrived at Earth 1700 years ago, during the decline of the Roman Empire. This supernova would only have been visible to inhabitants of Earth’s southern hemisphere. Unfortunately, there are no known records of this titanic event. Earlier studies proposed explosion dates of 2000 and 1000 years ago, but this new analysis is believed to be more robust.

To pinpoint when the explosion occurred, researchers studied the tadpole-shaped, oxygen-rich clumps of ejecta flung out by this supernova blast. Ionised oxygen is an excellent tracer because it glows brightest in visible light. By using Hubble’s powerful resolution to identify the 22 fastest moving ejecta clumps, or knots, the researchers determined that these targets were the least likely to have been slowed down by passage through interstellar material. They then traced the knots’ motion backward until the ejecta coalesced at one point, identifying the explosion site. Once that was known, they could calculate how long it took the speedy knots to travel from the explosion centre to their current location.

Hubble also measured the speed of a suspected neutron star — the crushed core of the doomed star — that was ejected from the blast. Based on the researchers’ estimates, it must be moving at more than 3 million kilometres per hour from the centre of the explosion to have arrived at its current position. The suspected neutron star was identified in observations with the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, in combination with data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory.

This 2007 multi-wavelength image of Abell 520 shows the aftermath of a complicated collision of galaxy clusters, some of the most massive objects in the Universe. In this image, the hot gas as detected by Chandra is colored red. Optical data from the Canada-France-Hawaii and Subaru telescopes shows the starlight from the individual galaxies (yellow and orange). The location of most of the matter in the cluster (blue) was also found using these telescopes, by tracing the subtle light-bending effects on distant galaxies. This material is dominated by dark matter.

Abell 520 has similarities to the so-called Bullet Cluster (also known as 1E0657-56). As with the Bullet Cluster, it appears that the galaxies flew past one another when the clusters collided, as expected. Another parallel is that there are large separations between the regions where the galaxies are most common (see inset for labeled peaks 2 and 4) and where most of the hot gas lies (peak 3).

There are significant differences, however, between Abell 520 and the Bullet Cluster. For example, a concentration of dark matter is found (peak 3) near the bulk of the hot gas, where very few galaxies are found. In addition, there is an area (peak 5) where there are several galaxies but very little dark matter. Both of these features are in contrast to popular theory that says dark matter and galaxies should stay together, even during a violent collision.

This is the deepest X-ray image ever obtained, made with over 7 million seconds of observing time with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. These data give astronomers the best look yet at the growth of black holes over billions of years beginning soon after the Big Bang, as described in our latest press release.

The image is from the Chandra Deep Field-South, or CDF-S. The full CDF-S field covers an approximately circular region on the sky with an area about two-thirds that of the full Moon. However, the outer regions of the image, where the sensitivity to X-ray emission is lower, are not shown here. The colors in this image represent different levels of X-ray energy detected by Chandra. Here the lowest-energy X-rays are red, the medium band is green, and the highest-energy X-rays observed by Chandra are blue.

Chandra Taal, or Chandra Tal is a lake situated in the Spiti part of the Lahul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh

At Nelvoy, near Uthiramerur

Two streams namely Chandra and Bhaga rise on the opposite sides of the Baralacha pass at an elevation of 4,891 metres and meet at Tandi at an elevation of 2,286 metres to form the river Chenab. The Chenab rises from the South-East and Bhaga from the North-West of the Baralacha pass. It enters Pangi valley of Chamba district near Bhujind and leaves the district at Sansari Nala to enter Podar valley of Kashmir. It flows in Himachal for 122 km. With its total length of 1,200 km., it has a catchment area of 61,000 sq. km., out of which 7,500 sq. km. lie in Himachal Pradesh. It is the largest river of Himachal Pradesh in terms of volume of waters. The Chenab valley is a structual trough formed by the great Himalayan and Pir Panjal ranges.
