The “Father of New France”, Champlain was at the heart of the French venture in North America form 1603 to 1635. Under the leadership of Pierre Dugua de Mons, he helped colonize Acadia and, in 1608, founded the settlement at Quebec that became the centre of the colony. He formed important alliances with Aboriginal peoples and expanded the French sphere of influence, travelling up the Ottawa River and as far west as the Great Lakes. Champlain explored and mapped large areas for the continent, and in his travel journal left an invaluable record of his era for future generations.

Lake Champlain (French: Lac Champlain) is a natural freshwater lake in North America, located mainly within the borders of the United States (states of Vermont and New York) but partially situated across the Canada-United States border in the Canadian province of Quebec.
The New York portion of the Champlain Valley includes the eastern portions of Clinton County and Essex County. Most of this area is part of the Adirondack Park. There are recreational opportunities in the park and along the relatively undeveloped coastline of Lake Champlain. The cities of Plattsburgh, New York and Burlington, Vermont are to the north of the lake, and the village of Ticonderoga, New York is located in the southern part of the region. The Quebec portion is located in the regional county municipalities of Le Haut-Richelieu and Brome-Missisquoi.

So happy Dean chose the group Champlain today, to honor Samuel de Champlain, "The Father of New France"! I just can't figure out why Dean thinks he's so bubbly though -- looks pretty serious to me.
*cackles*
And thanks to the lady walking her two dogs early this morning who wanted to know why I was photographing the Champlain Heights sign, then suggested two other likely signs I should check out!

Construction of the new Champlain Bridge represents one of North America’s biggest worksites. With its impressive scope broadly visible along the Saint Lawrence River, the new Champlain Bridge will change the urban look of Montreal and become a new symbol for the metropolis. Conceived in keeping with sustainable development practices, the project will lead the way in modern engineering and urban integration.
The new bridge will have a useful lifespan of 125 years.
A challenging 42-month timeline has been established for construction of the new bridge. This presents a great engineering challenge, particularly since it coincides with other major roadwork, including work on the current Champlain Bridge, the Turcot Interchange and the Bonaventure Expressway. Both in terms of the work itself and communication and traffic management, Signature on the Saint Lawrence is relying on substantial coordination and cooperation between the teams handling these major projects to minimize their impact on citizens. Similarly, significant effort is going into planning construction activities to enable and facilitate the work of the hundreds of workers who will maintain the flow day after day over the entire worksite of the new Champlain Bridge corridor.
To meet the challenging timeline, the decision was made to maximize the prefabrication of concrete and steel parts and assemble some on site and some off-site. For this purpose, a total of five jetties (three for the new Champlain Bridge and two for the new Île-des-Sœurs bridge) will be created during the preparatory phase of work (June to November 2015). They will also allow for dry construction of various parts of the bridge and serve as docks for mooring the many vessels to be used on the Saint Lawrence River.
