Nestled in the heart of Mueang Phuket District, Chaithararam
Temple—commonly known as Wat Chalong—is the largest and most revered Buddhist temple on the island. Just a couple of days before we left to return to Bangkok and a late afternoon trip took me to Chalong Bay. The island in the distance is Koh Lon. This sheltered bay seems to be a favourite harbour for the many fishing vessels operated by the locals.
This is my last shot from my Phuket series. Our lengthy summer away from home ended a couple of days after this when we drove home to Bangkok, more than 650 miles. Such was the restrictions in place at the time that we elected to drive the whole distance in one go. It was the further distance I have ever driven in a day.

Wat Chalong (วัดฉลอง) is considered the most revered of the 29 Buddhist temples on the island. It built in its current location some 10 kilometers south of Phuket Town in 1837. Some remains of older structures have been found but it is unknown exactly how old they are. One portion of “ancient wall” is just inside of the main arch at the entrance. The temple gained royal status in 1846 and was formally named Wat Chaiyathararam (วัดไชยธาราราม).
On the right there is a massive brick kiln in the grounds of Wat Chalong- I burst crackers here with locals and set off fireworks, as a way to thank the Buddha.
Known for its stunning architecture and sacred relics, Wat Chalong is a lesser known religious site in Phuket.
This is not the most popular attraction in Phuket, but if you have some extra time, it's worth seeing. This is not the most busy spot in the resort island, but it can still see large crowds during peak times and during peak travel season.

When we visited Wat Chalong in Phuket we were lucky enough to see this newlywed couple having their wedding photos taken. I think the wedding was elsewhere because we didn't see any of the rest of the party.
The most important of the 29 buddhist temples of Phuket is Wat Chalong (Thai: วัดฉลอง) or formally Wat Chaiyathararam (Thai: วัดไชยธาราราม), located in the Chalong Subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District. It is dedicated to two highly venerable monks, Luang Pho Chaem (หลวงพ่อแช่ม) and Luang Pho Chuang (หลวงพ่อช่วง), who led the citizens of Chalong Subdistrict fighting against the Chinese rebellion in 1876 and with their knowledge of herbal medicine helped the injured.

Phuket is a paradise of idyllic beaches and luxury resorts. But aside from dreamy vistas and plush amenities, it's an island packed with culture and adventure.
There are 29 Buddhist temples in Phuket, many of which are ornately adorned with a mix of Chinese dragons, statues of Buddha and even depictions of Hindu deities. Wat Chalong is the largest and most celebrated temple in Phuket because the tallest building within the temple grounds, the Pagoda, houses a bone fragment of the Lord Buddha.
Wat Chalong is Phuket's most important temple is because of its dedication to Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, two monks who helped heal those who had been injured in the fight against the Chinese Coolie Rebellion in 1876.

Wat Chalong is the largest and most important temple of the almost thirty Buddhist temples scattered throughout the island of Phuket. Here is the Grand Pagoda which holds a piece of the bone of His Lord Buddha.
A wonderful and almost surreal pink cloud over Phuket's Chalong bay early this morning and for once I wish I had brought a big stopper with me, the ambient light was quite lovely.

If you’re planning a trip to Phuket, don’t miss out on Wat Chalong (Wat Chaithararam) — the island’s largest and most important Buddhist temple. I recently visited and was amazed by the stunning architecture, peaceful atmosphere, and deep cultural significance.
The complex has four main buildings, including a tall chedi that houses a sacred relic of the Buddha. Inside, you’ll find detailed murals and golden statues that reflect the life of Buddha. I also learned about the Buddha posture for each day of the week — mine’s Wednesday, with Buddha standing and holding an alms bowl, symbolizing compassion.
There’s also a hall featuring statues of the revered monks Luang Pho Cham, Luang Pho Chuang, and Luang Pho Kleum. If your wish comes true, there’s even a tradition of thanking the Buddha by burning firecrackers. Just remember: dress modestly, follow the rules, and be respectful. A visit here is truly worth it.
