Part of the czech national library, this is one of the most beautiful library halls in the world, a must-see for all book-lovers, one of my strongest emotional shocks from a city with so much beauty everywhere!
"The baroque library was first opened in 1722 as a part of the Jesuit university based in Klementinum. It houses over 20,000 volumes of mostly foreign theological literature.
The interior of the baroque library has remained intact since the 18th century. The hall is decorated with ceiling frescoes by Jan Hiebl depicting allegorical motifs of education, and portraits of Jesuit saints, patrons of the university and prominent representatives of this order. At the head of the hall is a portrait of Emperor Joseph II., who arranged for the books from abolished monastic libraries to be sent to Klementinum. Also remarkable is the collection of geographical and astronomical globes in the center of the library. These are mainly works of the Jesuits. Among the globes are also astronomical clocks, constructed mainly by Jan Klein.
In 1777, the library was declared by Empress Maria Theresa as Public and University Library"
View of the city and the Church of St James 😊 in Kutná Hora 🇨🇿 It's located in the very heart of the medieval town 😊 One day trip really worth it and we could see almost everything 😍 I really recommend the visit there 😃
extraordinary library hall, even if the ceiling attracts more attention here than the books(which, for many of them, look like they were not actual books, but binders of some kind...)
" Baroque Theological Hall - established in the years 1671 - 1679 according to a project of architect Giovanni Dominik Orsi, who also made the ceiling’s stucco decorations. There are about 18 000 books in the Baroque libraries focused on theology, there are also wooden carved cartouches with pictures and inscriptions above the racks indicating the type of literature in the respective department. This is the first librarian gadget. Ceiling frescoes by Siard Nosecký, which date back to the 18th century, depict the people’s attitudes towards books; Latin inscriptions are quotations from the Bible. There is an interesting exhibit in the Theological Hall, and it is the so called compilation wheel, which is a desk to be used in compiling texts. There were books placed on the wheel’s racks, and a special mechanism prevented the books from falling down, and kept them in place.
There are earth and astronomical globes on both sides of the hall.
The interior was restored in the years 1993 - 1994"
These one-of-a-kind multi-turretted gothic towers preside, with their own subtle asymmetry, over a feast of dazzling baroque facades adorning all sides of the Square.
Would Jan Hus, the austere spearhead and martyr of Bohemian reformation, standing pensively at the center of it all, approve of the brash consumerism on display all around him, throughout the glittering stalls of the Christmas market?
this building took 600 years to build, which makes its harmonious grandeur all the more impressive. The 2 towers of the west facade (to the right) are from the 19th-20th century
