The Katsura is a deciduous tree with red or green flowers on different trees. These tiny red flowers indicate a male tree. My husband chose this for planting.

Katsura (Japanese elm, Cercidiphyllum japonicum) is a deciduous tree native to Japan and China. It often grows in clumps as seen in the photo.
Sanctuary forests of Shintou shrines often preserve original vegetations before development. Katsura is supposed to be a member of the original vegetation in this area.
Nakaya Oomiya Suwa Shrine (中谷大宮諏訪神社) is the main Shintou shrine of Otari village. The shrine was completed in 1619. It is one of thousands Suwa shrines found all over Japan.
The headquarters of Suwa shrines is located in Suwa city to the south in the same tectonic depression of Fossa Magna.
Tiny leaf from a Katsura tree. Yes, we planted it when we moved here before questioning if native. But it does absorb air pollutants, perhaps. And the tree nursery sold and planted it along with many native cedars and sequoias.
The tiny red "flaming flowers", and new little leaves, on a huge, old Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum). Katsura is native to China & Japan, but hardy here in the Northeastern U.S. Gorgeous throughout the year - with these tiny red flaming flowers in the Spring, heart-shaped green leaves in the Summer and brilliant orange/pink/red leaves in the Autumn that smell of "burnt brown sugar and cotton candy." Katsura is not a common tree here but that's beginning to change. :)

Katsurabaum : Der Japanische Kuchenbaum (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) oder jap. 桂, Katsura, auch Japanischer Katsurabaum, Lebkuchenbaum oder einfach, jedoch nicht eindeutig, Kuchenbaum genannt, ist eine Baumart aus der nur zwei Arten zählenden Gattung Kuchenbäume (Cercidiphyllum). Der Name Kuchenbaum stammt vom Geruch des Laubs vor und nach dem Fallen im Herbst. Insbesondere bei feuchtem Wetter riechen die Blätter nach frischem Gebäck, Karamell oder Lebkuchen. Nein, es ist kein verspäteter Aprilscherz, es handelt sich tatsächlich um den Kuchenbaum.
Kuchenbäume (bot. Cercidiphyllum) sind botanische Raritäten. Es sind Relikte aus der Vorzeit und als lebende Fossile die letzten und einzigen Vertreter ihrer Art, die schon vor Millionen Jahren auf der Erde existierte.
Bekannt sind sie als Katsurabäume.
Die deutsche Bezeichnung erhielten die Grüngehölze wegen ihres schönen Duftes im Herbst. Dann verströmen die welken Blätter einen angenehmen Duft nach Karamell oder
Lebkuchen.
Die sommergrünen Laubbäume der Gattung Cercidiphyllum kommen heute noch wild in zwei Arealen in Asien vor. Kuchenbäume werden dort bis zu 45 Meter hoch. Ihr helles Holz ist für Furniere geschätzt. In Europa sowie in weiteren Zonen mit gemäßigtem Klima erfreut sich vor allem der Japanische Kuchenbaum (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) mit seinen Varietäten großer Beliebtheit. Er schmückt als Ziergehölz Parkanlagen und Gärten.
Kuchenbäume sind in vielerlei Hinsicht auffällige Gehölzpflanzen. Die Blätter duften und sind eine herrliche Augenweide. Das Laub treibt nach den Blüten im Frühjahr aus. Die Blätter sind anfangs bronzefarben bis violett. Im Laufe des Sommers nehmen sie eine grüne bis blau-grüne Farbe an und wechseln im Herbst zu einem leuchtenden Orangerot.

Tiny heart-shaped Katsura leaf, fallen prematurely, before becoming "caramelized." Setting it afloat in the deep blue birdbath seemed to be the best way to highlight its fading beauty.
