As Neowise started to head for the horizon at about midnight, The Big Dipper took over in the dark sky above. This was taken with the Pitstone Windmill in Buckinghamshire, England in the foreground. The mill is owned by The National Trust and dates back to the 17th century. This gem in the Chiltern countryside is the oldest dated windmill in Britain.
Rhinoceros: since 1973 the population has recovered well and increased to 544 animals around the turn of the century. To ensure the survival of the endangered species in case of epidemics animals are translocated annually from Chitwan to the Bardia National Park and the Sukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve since 1986. However, the population has repeatedly been jeopardized by poaching: in 2002 alone, poachers killed 37 individuals in order to saw off and sell their valuable horns.[6] Chitwan has the largest population of Indian rhinoceros in Nepal, estimated at 605 individuals out of 645 in total in the country.

The Roman bridge of Córdoba is a bridge in the Historic centre of Córdoba, Andalusia, southern Spain, originally built in the early 1st century BC across the Guadalquivir river, though it has been reconstructed at various times since. It is also known locally as the Old Bridge as for two thousand years, until the construction of the San Rafael Bridge in the mid-twentieth century, it was the city's only bridge across the river.
Most of the present structure dates from the Arabs reconstruction in the 8th century.
** From Fountains Abbey it is only a short walk along the river to the Studley Royal water gardens . The gardens were designed by John Aislabie in the early seventeenth century, they are a fine example of a Georgian water gardens
The Temple of Piety seen in the centre of the image is one of the many neo-classical buildings in Studley Royal.
a bit more background
In the early 18th-century John Aislabie had great plans to impress visitors to his Yorkshire estate and so turned the wild and wooded valley of the river Skell into one of England’s most spectacular Georgian water gardens.
John Aislabie inherited the Studley Royal estate in 1693. He was a socially and politically ambitious man and became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1718. Disaster struck his career in 1720 due to his part in the South Sea Bubble financial scandal and he was expelled from Parliament. It was then that John returned to Yorkshire and devoted himself to creating this ground-breaking garden. Inspired by the work of the great French landscape gardeners, the two gifted amateurs created the Water Garden with its formal, geometric design and extraordinary vistas; including the much photographed Temple of Piety. You can also find classical statues, follies and garden buildings carefully positioned within the landscape to discover and enjoy.
Amazingly the garden you see today is little changed from the one that would have impressed Aislabie’s visitors 200 years ago.

One of Savannah’s most beloved attractions is Forsyth Park. Among the park’s abundant greenery is the dense urban forest of gnarled live oaks draped with Spanish moss. The old Oak trees are as iconic to the city of Savannah as its man-made historic treasures.
Since the early 19th century, Savannah planted out trees in its streets and squares to provide shade in the summer and beauty the year round, earning it the title of “The Forest City.” Today, its arching live oaks, swathed with picturesquely gothic drapes of Spanish moss, are one of the city’s most charming and typical sights.

Standing tall in front of the awe-inspiring Kailasa Temple at Ellora, the Victory Pillar (Dhwajastambha) is more than just an architectural element—it is a symbol of spiritual conquest and imperial devotion. Carved from a single rock in the 8th century under the patronage of Rashtrakuta king Krishna I, the Kailasa Temple is one of the greatest monolithic structures in the world. The Victory Pillar marks the sacred threshold to this grand temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, celebrating not just military victories, but also the triumph of dharma (righteousness) over chaos.

As well as having any number of delightful shades and colours, Dewhurst's Sylko have an equally wonderful range of names to accompany them. As I embarked on my "Embroider my World" project, I think I fell in love with the names of the Sylko colours as much as the colours themselves. This lovely shade of dusky pink is called "Biskara", named after Biskra, the capital city of Biskra Province in Algeria.
When it was my birthday last year, a very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions. She also gave me three follow up tins of similar delightful gifts for Christmas.
Those wonderful gifts are what has inspired me to create this series of "Embroider my World" images featuring my vintage bobbin collection. In this case my Dewhurst's Sylko Biskara reel of cotton which dates from between 1938 and 1954 sits atop some creamy ecru lace which has gained its colour after more than one and half centuries of life, as it is from the 1850s. The spool is accessorised by two Victorian glass bead tassels, sparking in the morning light, and an Art Deco pearl and rhinestone appliqué.
Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills. The mill’s position next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal meant that raw cotton could be shipped in by boats from Liverpool. Finished goods would then be sent back the same way ready for distribution. Coal to power the machine’s steam engines was also delivered by barge. In 1897 Dewhurst’s was bought by the English Sewing Cotton Co. It continued to produce Sylko, one of the mill’s most famous products. It was produced in over 500 colours and sold throughout the world. Sylko cottons are still available at haberdashers today.
St Govan’s 13th century Chapel is one of three points of photographic interest (the Green Bridge of Wales and Elegug stacks being the other two) accessible only at weekends as the only route in is through the Ministry of Defence’s Castlemartin gunnery range
The chapel sits precariously on a cliff-lined cove on the site of a holy well once frequented by pilgrims.
The church of Saint Dunat, located near the village of Kornić on the island of Krk, is believed to date from the 12th century, although there are speculations that it was built earlier. The church was heavily damaged in an explosion in 1945, after which it was reconstructed.
I composed this photograph while walking through a residential area in Palm Desert, California. It is, I believe, an example of Mid-century Modern architecture, quite common in this area.
Mid-century modern was originally considered a collection of homes built after World War II, rather than a specific style. However, "mid-century modern" now often denotes a particular building or decorating style, characterized by clean lines, minimal decoration, and a connection with nature. It features a wide, low house footprint with large, open spaces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and an emphasis on bringing the outdoors in.
Time travel, is it possible? As far as I am concerned it certainly is. This street was constructed in the 17th Century in the town of Saint Andrews. The only thing that has changed is the height of the trees and the road surface over the years.

Not far from the Postojna Cave there is also Predjama Castle and we visited it too :)
Predjama Castle is a Renaissance castle built under a vertical rock over a hundred meters high, within a cave mouth in south-central Slovenia, in the historical region of Inner Carniola. It is located in the village of Predjama and the largest cave castle in the world. The castle was originally built into a large cave in the 12th century, covering its entrance. Its traces are visible deep inside the cave and they are part of the some castle rooms. Later - around 1570 - the castle was expanded to its current form. The parts of the cave used by the castle are connected to an extensive system of cave corridors, most of which are located below the castle. In times of threat from external invasions, the local population took refuge there with their property and livestock. The cave under the castle was created as a result of the waters of the Lokva River flowing towards the Adriatic Sea and it's the home of a colony of bats. Part of the cave is "dead", which means that no further karst phenomena are progressing in it, which is the result of human activity - the use of these parts of the cave for residential and storage purposes, as well as the digging of passages, tunnels, shafts and adits between them. Currently, the castle, together with a several hundred-meter section of the cave, is open to tourists and can be visited with a guide.

The Fifteenth Century Bookshop is an incredible building at the top of Lewes High Street. The bookshop is housed in a fascinating, 15th Century, beamed building. The outside has recently undergone a sensitive renovation, in keeping with the traditions of its history.

Last week I posted a photo of the outside of this house at Avoncroft Museum of Buildings. The inside has been presented as it could have been when first built in the 16th Century.
The house, called The Town House at the museum, was originally in Bromsgrove. It was demolished in 1962 and eventually reconstructed at the museum, opening to the public in 1967.
