We quite like the crazy assembly of pipes in our kitchen that link the new boiler to the gas and water supply and various appliances. Not sure that our landlady will agree though!

You may recall that two days ago I mentioned my Law of Not Turning On The Central Heating Until 4 October.
erm.. Did I mention that I break it every year..?
My central heating boiler has decided that it has had enough of safe living, preferring instead to adopt a risk taking, heat exchanger melting, cash sapping, self-destructive life. In other words, I think my boiler is suicidal.
I don't think it feels this way because I'm neglectful: I give it regular professional check-ups, watch over it and give it extra water if it needs a drink.
Lately though its thirst has grown. I don't know where this water goes - I've checked all around the house for any little accidents it might have had but can't find any.
Not sure who to call: a dowser, a life-coach or a plumber.
Surrey House is a Grade I listed building, designed by George Skipper as the headquarters for The Norwich Union Life Insurance Society, now Aviva.
The main hall incorporates over 15 types of marble, originally destined for Westminster Cathedral. The hall has a spectacular glass-domed ceiling, of around 11m in diameter.
What appears to be a swinging pendulum suspended from the ceiling is in fact a system to waft warm air in winter and cool air in summer. Disguised as a marble fountain, it sucked the outside air through a screen, passing through radiators and electric fans, where the heat could be varied in temperature. This was then deflected by a brass pendant and pumped through the hall.
It's a frosty morning and the warm air coming from my central heating boiler is condensing in the cold air.

The Public Health Service Hospital (PHSH) is located in the Presidio of San Francisco. It has been rehabilitated into luxury condos housing in 2010, and it is now called "Presidio Landmark Apartments".

Despite the best efforts of a Catholic education, a well meaning colleague and any number of doorstep conversations with evangelical Christians, I've long been fairly comfortable with my atheism.
The latest chapter in my central heating saga offers evidence that maybe, just maybe, there is a God. And he hates me.
*sighs*
A leak in a vent pipe appeared inch perfectly to, drop by drop, fill the circuit box on the side of this pump with water causing a short circuit.
I'm sure the Latter Day Saints would tell me that it's in atonement for some transgression and that they would help me to pray for redemption (and in fairness, then probably help me fix the pump because they're basically nice people). The Witnesses would probably tell me that God's presence could be seen in my having the foresight to keep the old pump, and my old workmate Casey would have told me that the fault was a challenge and God's gift was my ability to swap out the pump with the old one.
Maybe deep down I subscribe to the inevitability theory - shit happens, and sometimes you just have to get in there and wipe!

This is Wayne! The British Gas engineer sent to fix my boiler! He speedily diagnosed the fault and set about rectifying it. Never losing concentration despite me hovering around with my camera!
After changing the thermocouple between the ignition switch and the pilot light, all is now working correctly!

A hypocaust is an ancient Roman system of central heating. The word literally means "heat from below", from the Greek hypo meaning below or underneath, and kaiein, to burn or light a fire. This one is in Bath's Roman Baths Museum.

So, in response to my email last night, the builder (whose subcontractor fitted our boiler last year) rang this morning at 8 am to say a plumber/heating engineer would call at 9am. He duly did, and quickly discovered that we have no oil left, which is why the central heating cut out! Oops - a bit embarrassing! So, the digital fuel level reader is headed for the bin, and it will be visual/dip inspections from now on - lesson learnt. I rang Watson's to order a tank full at 9.20am, and by 1.20pm, they had delivered it - excellent service. The boiler still won't light, as there's probably an air-lock in the pipe, but we'll get the heating chappie back in due course, to service the boiler and sort that out. Meanwhile, we've got a new grate, more logs from the village store, and a fire all set to light this evening.
