If you look carefully you can see the dents from my glasses on my nose. I'm not quite back in contacts yet, but the glare was terrible under the fluorescents in the basement so I took them off. I went back to work today. I'm still not looking well and several questioned whether I should be there. The fatigue is pretty much gone - still that damned lack of focus though.
The smile (what smile you ask? look closely it's there... by comparison... yuh-huh... is so) is for David (srfutbol) who showed me his gluten-free dogfood today. How sweet is that? I have made nearly half my word goal for today and I'm going back to it. I hope you are doing the same, David. We're behind, but we can still DO this thing! Let's win NaNo! Come on!
P.S. - 9:55PM and I got in 3022 words. I made my goal tonight. If I can just keep up 3000 words a night for 10 more days I can win this thing. I really can!
Diego had a blood draw today. They put the needle in and she said, "owie." Her big sister, however, cried like she was dying. "Why are you collecting her blood?! WHY?!? AHHH NOT MY SISTER WHAAAA!" For a minute she looked like the most caring big sister...until I told her that the test might tell us why she's had such bad stomach pains and anemia - that she might have Celiac Disease like her big sister, and she pumps her fist and says "YES!!! So she can't have cake either!... er, I mean awww poor Diego."

1. A Vegetarian, Rorion Gracie, created the entire UFC MMA Mixed Martial Arts Ultimate Fighting Championships.
2. A Vegetarian, Helio Gracie, the Father of Rorion Gracie, invented GJJ Gracie Jiu-Jitsu
3. A Vegetarian, Carlos Gracie, developed BJJ Brazilian JiuJitsu.
4. A pesca-vegetarian, Royce Gracie, beat all the other meat-eaters to win the very first UFC. And he beat them when there were no weight classes, so he had to fight men 3x his size and beat them too. And to prove it wasn't a fluke, he did it again, and the vegetarian entered again and won the UFC TWICE!
The Ultimate Fighting Championships, Cage Fighting in the Octagon, Modern MMA as seen live in the UFC today, Gracie Jiujitsu, and BJJ Brazilian Jiujitsu the father of Gracie Barra. All of these were originated by Vegetarian Athletes and Fighters.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was invented by a Vegetarian. His name is Rorion Gracie. It is the origin of octagon cage fighting and modern mixed martial arts as we have come to know it today in the octagon. The vegetarian also created the practice of cage fighting in an Octagon, the octagon was also invented by the vegetarian.
You may have heard of Gracie Jiujitsu. This was invented by Rorion Gracie's father, Helio Gracie, of the Gracie Family, the forefather of Gracie Barra. Helio Gracie, the inventor of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu GJJ was also a vegetarian.
Uncle Carlos is Carlos Gracie, brother of Helio Gracie, a vegetarian and that is who developed BJJ, Brazialian Jiu Jitsu. BJJ is a must-learn technique for every MMA fighter in the UFC today, if not in the world. That is, if they want to win, the meat-eater had better learn what was invented a hundred years ago by a Vegetarian man or they won't last the ring.
Pollo-Vegetarian Royce Gracie also won the very 1st UFC #1! And the vegetarian had to fight those who weighed up to 250+ pounds! Not only did he beat all the other meat-eaters, he beat all the other meat-eaters in 1 night!
And then to prove it wasn't an accident, he did it again! A vegetarian also won UFC #2 and vegetarians have been dominant in the UFC ever since, though you may not know it just like you probably didn't know vegetarians invented it.
Meat is not good for athletes and a meat diet is deficient in nutrients, it results in tiredness, lack of endurance, failure to have any stamina, and more porous weaker muscle. Plant based muscle is packed more solid and vegetarian muscle is stronger. Meat contains estrogen. Meat is feminine. Cooking meat produces a substance called "Heterocyclic Amines", one of which is called PhIP, which is estrogenic and so all meat when cooked, especially barbequed steak is effeminizing. Not many people are aware of this. Vegetarians do not have this problem. This is why vegetarians were measured to have higher testosterone levels than men who eat meat.
Vegetarian and vegan is the best diet for athletes, men, and fighters. Roman Gladiators, the original ultimate fighters were also vegetarian. Shaolin Monks who developed kung fu were also vegetarian.
Vegetarian Mac Danzig beat all the other meat-eaters to take the belt on THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER. Danzig is not just vegetarian, he is vegan, and he was the largest, most massive muscular man on the entire show.
Vegetarian Nick Diaz also won THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER. So did Nate Diaz, also a vegetarian. The StrikeForce middleweight champion Jake Shields is a vegetarian. Heavyweight Frank Mir ate vegetarian at 280 pounds. Randy Couture beat 6 foot 8 Tim Sylvia and Couture trains on an alkaline plant-based diet. The EliteXC martial arts belt holder is a vegetarian. UFC fighter Aaron Simpson is a vegetarian. Jon Fitch ranked #2 in the world at the current time is vegetarian. Ben Saunders MMA fighter is a Vegetarian. Luke Cuomo who made it to the semi-finals and the finals on The Ultimate Fighter eats vegetarian. WEC champion Urijah Faber trains on a plant-based diet. MMA fighter Kyra Gracie is vegetarian. Ryron Gracie of the Gracie Mixed Martial Arts clan is vegetarian.
Penny Thomas, the world Brazilian Jiujitsu womens champion is vegetarian. Nicolas Gregorades of the Jiujitsu Brotherhood fighting academy is virtually all vegetarian. Shanti belha, 2-time world Brazilian Jiujitsu fighting champion is vegetarian. Ahmed El Ghandouri, Brazilian Kiujitsu Black Belt is a vegan.
Dave Meyer of the American BJJ Academy and a blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Machado--is vegetarian.
The original ultimate fighters the roman Gladiators were mainly vegetarian. Kung Fu was developed by the Shaolin Monks who were vegetarian. The very Art of Martial Arts itself was invented by Bodhidharma who was from India, and was a vegetarian.
Bellator Fighting Championships Ricardo Moreira is a vegan. Eric the Bengal Castile, in the UFC is a vegetarian. Heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson is now a vegan. StrikeForce fighter and NFL Football player and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker is a vegetarian. The Dream3 Grand Prix Fighting championship belt is owned by a vegetarian.
The TITAN Fighting Championships fight winner Jason High is a vegetarian. Vegetarians are now ranked in the top 2,3,and 5 spots in the best p4p in the world in the UFC welterweight division, meaning that vegetarians hold 66% of the top rankings in the UFC's welterweight division. Antonio McKee who established Rampage Jackson's Gym is a vegan. AKC trains vegetarian UFC fighters. Noah Hannibal "The VEGAN TANK" is a vegetarian powerlifter who beat all his other opponents and took gold in the Australian Powerlifting championships. MMA Fighter Dale Hart is a vegetarian and has an unblemished 5 and 0 record. All wins.
MMA fighter Erik Purcell is a vegetarian. The vegetarian Purcell just beat 6 foot 6 inch Aaron Skates at the Reality Fighting Championships. King of the Cage fighter Tom Kenny is vegetarian.
UFC Heavyweight contender Shane Carwin is now training vegan. Heavyweight 120kilogram Jan Muller is vegetarian. JiuJitsu champion Henry Atkins is vegan. MMA Fighter Georgi Krakhanyan is vegetarian.
Finland fighter Harri Nieminem is vegetarian. So is James WIlks, vegetarian UFC fighter from England in the UK.
And many more.

And many more. You probably didn't realize that so many UFC fighters and current belt holders and MMA champions were vegetarians, because they are often not preachy about it and don't make it known, but they have recognized the best most-athletic and muscular endurance diet for athletes and UFC fighters is plant-based vegetarian and vegan. Your cardio power shoots through the roof. You can out-last, out-hit, and out-muscle other opponents who don't know what hit them. Plus, nobody wants meat-eaters to find out that a vegetarian diet is better, that's like giving away the secret, so vegan and vegetarian fighters sometimes keep tight lipped and let meat eaters continue to post and convince all the others that meat or steak is what you need before a fight, that way their opponents will gas, get tired out, be weak and not have any strength, and once again lose do to a meat-based diet. Lowcarb is even funnier since you can actually get opponents to go around eating bacon, sausage, and piles of fat and get them loaded down, obese, and likely to fall over, that is if they even make weight. Likewise the Paleo Diet has now been found fake and scientifically wrong, proven wrong by actual Paleontologists. Turns out the original discoverer of Australopithecus, a real paleontologist revealed man's ancient ancestors were vegetarian, including Australopithecus africanus, Paranthropus boisei, Ardipithecus ramidus, all vegetarian ancestors of man that came millions of years BEFORE paleo man. Turns out the Paleo Diet was fabricated by a "gym teacher" who was not even a paleontologist and was never on even 1 archeological dig.
The Paleo Diet was ranked 24th by experts in nutrition, problem is there were just 24 in the list for review, which means The Paleo Diet came in LAST place, the worst diet of all. --Yes, the Paleo Diet was found deficient, pseudo-scientific nonsense made to appear like it was scientific, and the Paleo Diet lost and landed in last place as the worst. This is also a reason why crossfit has become the laughing-stock of the athletic and fitness world, akin to the shake-weight of fitness. Or the mullet. Crossfit fitness centers often have what's called a "puke bucket" lying around. They like to claim this as somehow being proof that their workouts of little light burpees and things is 'so tough' but really it's just because crossfit people start eating the Paleo Diet and it tastes so bad and is so horrible for fitness and athletes that they vomit it back up. All kinds of partially digested meat and so forth, right there in the gym when they work out. Didn't know this? Do a search for "Crossfit Puke Bucket" you'll see it. They even wear T-shirts bragging about puking on it in crossfit, because the paleo diet tastes so bad. Imagine how much worse it tastes on the way back up. Robb Wolf recommending sausages and things. Great for sausage-lovers probably, but not real ironmen or mma fighters or real athletes.
Crossfit is pretty much like ladies' pilates. MovNat is like having someone come over and do your housework, carrying out the trash, and mopping up the bathroom for you. In any case, the foods recommended by the gym teacher who peddled the Paleo Diet were found nutritionally deficient, and Paleo Diet foods have now been linked to colorectal cancer (cancer of the butt). This is why Paleo and Crossfit have become ridiculed as 'so silly not even a caveman did it'. Referring to the fact that the Paleo Diet told to people in the books is NOT even what paleolithic man turned out to eat. For instance, on a real paleo diet, you'd have to eat maggots in your meat, afterall, paleo man scavenged putrifying meat. Also you can't refrigerate your meat, on a paleo diet, then you'll need to keep your meat outside, in the hot sun, because paleo man originated in Africa. So on Paleo you'll need to eat luke warm rotted meat, brimming with botfy maggots in it. Oh, and you can't drink treated disinfected water, cavemen didn't have tapwater out of faucets, sorry. Nor bottled water. So if you're on paleo you'll have to drink out of some watering-hole where animals wash themselves.
Drinking feces ound delicious? If you think so, then Paleo is for you. Just don't expect girls or the ladies to be around you because unlike vegetarians, men on a Paleo Diet it's been shown to cause horrible B.O. stink and odor. Oh, and paleo man didn't have a toothbrush. So ladies, if your boyfriend ot date is paleo, look forward to low stamina, offensive Body Odor smells, cavemen didn't have showers, and getting close to a mouth full of bacteria because paleo man didn't brush their teeth.
Vegetarians do not have this problem. And last longer, were scientifically measured in tests to have More Testosterone than meat eaters, smell better, comb their hair, and have higher stamina, and endurance. And better protectors. Afterall, vegetarians invented Martial Arts, BJJ, and the UFC.

Redbridge Beer hosts a benefit dinner for the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness.
Celiac disease is a common affliction affecting about one in every 133 Americans. People with celiac disease cannot tolerate a protein called gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye. Redbridge, made by Anheuser-Busch, is the first nationally-available sorghum beer, made without wheat or barley. A gluten-free gourmet Mexican dinner was prepared by Centrico chef Aarn Sanchez, cookbook author and Food Network star.
CNN Newsroom anchor Heidi Collins, a celiac and spokesperson for the NFCA, hosted along with Alice Bast, founder and executive director of the NFCA.
I have Celiac Disease.
I "accidentally" ingested gluten this week. I should have known better. Really. Eating something questionable is not an acceptable action. Still, that's what I did. And it was stupid. On top of all the stress and grief of this month my body had ZERO resilience to any kind of exposure.
First sign - that lovely fever blister. Immune system quickly takes that first step and then spins out of control. Dizzy. Fatigued. Nauseated. Has that foothold now. Kicks of a bout of recurring epstein barr- see those swollen glands under my chin that are vaguely froglike? Yes eppstein barr. Mono. I already had my annual round of that in May - so now I'm super irritated. Let's top that off with - now that your immune system has been completely taken down for the week what could a little conjunctivitis hurt?
If I sound bitter I'm just angry at myself. I love my life and I live it in relative freedom from illness as long as I watch what I eat. I've been introduced to so many new kinds of foods and flavors that there is really no need for me to ever go outside of that and eat something "questionable"... yet here I am.
My word count is at zero for yesterday. This photo is of me on the way to my doctors office so that they can be really vague about what I should do about anything except for the conjunctivitis which is an easy prescription of eye drops.
If you know someone with Celiac Disease please take them seriously. If you care about them don't ever suggest that they just try something. It isn't a matter of a little tummy ache or GI distress. This is a disease of the immune system. Read about it. If you don't know anyone now you will within the next 1 to 5 years. 1 in every 100 people has it and 97% of them are currently undiagnosed.
If you have CFS or IBS or have been feeling unwell for years and been accused of being a hypochondriac - the latter being my plight for fifteen years prior to diagnosis - please go to your doctor and ask them to be tested for Celiac Disease. If they seem uncomfortable with that I would urge them to explore the newest reserach on Celiac.
If you have Celiac Disease - don't take chances. Each exposure to gluten could be the one that leads to future neurological disorders or non-hodgkins lymphoma or lupus or any number of other conditions that have now been related to un-treated Celiac Disease.
Celiac Disease. Look it up. Remember it. It's huge. Then - take it seriously. One of the worst side effects to the treatment of Celiac Disease - maintaining a 100% gluten free diet - is social isolation. If you know someone with Celiac Disease the best thing that you can do is EVERYTHING THEY FEEL IS NECESSARY TO PROTECT THEIR HEALTH. Jump through the hoops. Encourage and praise them for making a giant fuss about everything that passes their lips. It's a big deal. Treat it like one. Hug them and feed them products that are marked gluten-free. Don't be upset if they don't feel comfortable eating dinner at your house.
Maybe this sounds like alot. Feel free to tell me you think so. But remember - if you care about this person at all and you don't want them to develop complications that could end up killing them in the long run - it's worth the trouble isn't it? Isn't it worth the fuss?
I'm really tired and I'm going back to bed now. I'll get my pic for today at some point and hopefully will have enough energy to work on my novel tonight. Please feel free to ask me questions. I can point in a hundred directions for answers I don't have. And hopefully I haven't pissed anyone else with Celiac off. We all have different takes and feelings on living with this disease. Too bad it took me getting sick to finally say something about it here. Or maybe it's good that I have presented the last 76 days of me living my normal life with it first. *shrugs*. Yeah. Laying back down now. Later...
Author, William Davis, is a preventative cardiologist who is also diabetic. And using his glucose meter, he found that whole wheat bread spiked his sugars beyond expectations just as I was surprised to find. In fact it increased blood sugars more than table sugar did. Better to eat a Snickers bar. What set his discovery apart was that he decided to look into the composition of wheat itself and discovered that, after years of hybridization to create greater yields, wheat has changed and is now so stuffed with gluten that it is harmful to a large number of the population eating it. The tall graceful wheat of old is now a short stubby thing so that it can hold up the overloaded grain head.
To test this discovery, he goes in search of our ancestral grains and finds a woman at the Heritage Wheat Foundation who gives him Einkorn grain which he then grinds and makes into bread and compares with bread he makes from store bought whole grain flour. Testing his blood sugars after ingesting 4 ounces of both he got 110 mg/dl for the Einkorn and nothing unpleasant, but for the store bought grain he got 167 mg/dl plus 36 hours of discomfort due to his wheat sensitivity. I admire an author willing to go the distance.
Thus, he concludes the wheat of today has brought us the obesity epidemic and the dramatic rise in celiac disease and diabetes, also making the body more acidic which, as I've learned, is the cause of inflammation in the body which also encourages cancer growth. He explores the addictive properties of wheat, how it become an opiate in the brain. How it contributes to aging by creating Advanced Glycation End products (AGE) by keeping blood sugars high. So Diabetes is actually a state of accelerated aging. Also a chapter on the effects of wheat on the skin in the form of eczema and more acne for teenagers and baldness for men.
I was interested to learn about glucotoxicity which is actual damage to pancreatic insulin-producing beta cells that results from high blood sugars at just 100 mg/dl. Doctor's don't pay attention until it's 140 mg/dl.
It is not just wheat, it is also other grains, but wheat made the best story because it is the most consumed in our food supply. And because he is a practicing doctor, he has had lots of opportunity to see changes in symptoms in his patients after they did their "wheat-ectomy". And tells some compelling anecdotes about various chronic and debilitating symptoms disappearing. He also warns not to go with gluten free products because the gluten is replaced with other starches and the results can be just as bad.
In the process of convincing people to get off wheat he offers them saturated fats. Thus he is one of the few doctors/authors who gets that we've been hoodwinked about fats and that carbohydrates are to blame for those dense LDL particles that cause damage to arteries. He does warn that eating meat can contribute to AGEs forming, but this is neutralized if eaten with vegetables and if the meat is cooked at lower temperatures for shorter times.
At 230 pages this is a quick read, particularly because the doctor can write and uses humor and cultural references to add interest to the narrative. He explains the science of insulin, lipids, celiac disease and related conditions like acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome so a lot can be learned just by reading this one book alone. It is a good follow up to Good Calories, Bad Calories without wading through all the politics of why fats were demonized. I'm very glad to see it was on the NYT bestseller list for so long.
His book is persuasive enough that people might actually try reducing their wheat intake, though in my experience people are incredibly reluctant to give up bread. Most people have to really be hurting to change their diet. And I mean at their wits end and desperate. Or maybe just a teen with acne or a balding man. Just remember wheat is an opiate and after two weeks off wheat, significant differences may very well be detected, including more clear headedness as I experienced. This helps a lot if you are on the ADD spectrum. Plus I see there is now a niche for Einkorn bread. And per the Western Price Foundation research, proper preparation of grains by soaking helps a lot. Sour dough is the bread they recommend.
Will you still like me if I show you my sadness?
We hide our strong emotions. We hide them so that they don't make other people uncomfortable. In our darkest moments that we most need to be acknowledged, we stuff these feelings into a box and shove them under the bed.
Just for today, while I'm sick and tired and life isn't going my way, I'll drag this out and show you. There are things in all of our lives that even in these intimate portraits we don't share. I'm hoping that the pendulum is now headed for an upward swing. I could use a few bright days.
P.S. I already feel better than when I took this photo this afternoon, but fatigue and sadness have rendered another zero word count day for nanowrimo...
Several children exhibit sensitivities to particular foods, most of which are not grave. But, Celiac disease is a severe condition occurring due to long-standing gluten intolerance – a kind of protein present in wheat, rye and barley.

My Portfolio: Print Awareness Campaign
This print campaign – which includes a poster, postcard and booklet – was created to raise awareness about Celiac Disease, a prevalent hereditary condition that is widely unknown and undetected in America. If carriers of the disease remain undiagnosed, they can develop a host of other serious health problems as a result, some of which can be fatal.
The objective of this campaign was to visually demonstrate how commonly this disease goes undetected in America, using red acetate to illustrate the invisibility of this condition and color coordinated figures that demonstrate the human ratios of those affected by the disorder
I asked the doctor to "share" some of his photos with me. My guts - ultimately he did a biopsy to confirm Celiac disease (essentially a gluten allergy).

The glands were still really swollen this morning. I'm glad to say that effect has diminished some and they aren't as sore. I'm feeling better but still pretty exhausted. No change in word count, but I'm not writing today off yet (har har - no pun intended) as it is only 7PM. There is still time if I can just get my brain to pick a gear other than neutral. My mood is improved greatly over yesterday. Still some melancholy, but definitely better. I find it strange that swollen glands make me look like I put on 20 pounds. It's quite uncomfortable. I'm supposed to be able to wear contact lenses by Monday as well. These glasses give me such a headache...
