The Association of California School Administrators’ (ACSA) Student Services and Special Education Council and Fagen Friedman & Fulfrost LLP (F3) are partnering to show that Every Child Counts and to take a moment to Celebrate Success by sponsoring a statewide art contest for all K-12 public education students.

 

Winning pieces will be on display during the “Every Child Counts...Celebrate Success” Symposium being held January 12-14, 2011 at the Portola Hotel & Spa in Monterey, CA. The winning drawings will be used to make note cards, which will be made available at the Symposium for all attendees. Following the “Every Child Counts...Celebrate Success” Symposium, the winning pieces will be on display in the ACSA Sacramento office.

Winning entries:

 

Two students from each of the following grade categories will be selected: Grades K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8, 9-12.

 

The winning entries will be chosen by the “Every Child Counts...Celebrate Success” Symposium Planning Committee. The Planning Committee members are Maureen Burness, Symposium Chair, Folsom Cordova USD; Sherman Garnett, Student Services and Special Education Council President, San Bernardino COE; Tim Calkins, Director, Special Education, Shasta UHSD; Steve Collins, SELPA Director, West Contra Costa USD; Nancy Maxson, Coordinator, Health Services, Ventura USD; Jane Mills, Director, Child Welfare/Attendance, Palm Springs USD; and Jerry Hime, CEC-CASE Liaison.

 

Each “Every Child Counts...Celebrate Success” winner will receive a $250 savings bond sponsored by Fagen Friedman & Fulfrost. Art contest winners will be announced in the December issue of ACSA’s EdCal newspaper. A congratulatory letter will also be mailed to the student at the address specified on the entry.

Contest theme & rules:

 

Students should create a work of art that visually captures the essence of success—unique to their own perspectives—in a celebratory fashion. Entrants will be critiqued on theme, execution, and creativity.

 

* Drawings must be solely the original work of the student entrant; Plagiarized drawings will be immediately disqualified without any opportunity for resubmission;

* Entrants must submit only one drawing;

* Decisions of the judges are final; and

* All entries become property of ACSA and F3 and will not be returned.

 

Paper to be used for the drawings must be no smaller than 8.5” x 11” and no larger than 11” x 17”. Composition may be vertical or horizontal in orientation. Artists may use any colorful medium that includes markers, paints, pastels, colored pencils, or crayons. Pencil drawings shall also be acceptable.

 

Include with each entry on a separate piece of paper the students full name, age, grade, name of school/school district, principal/ teacher’s name, and contact number for the principal/teacher. Any submittal that is not made in accordance with these instructions shall be immediately disqualified without any opportunity for resubmission.

Contest eligibility:

 

All California public education students, grades K-12.

Contest Dates:

 

The contest will officially begin on August 1, 2010 and end on October 22, 2010. Entries must be postmarked no later than October 22, 2010.

Submitting entries:

 

All “Every Child Counts...Celebrate Success” art contest entries must be submitted to the following address:

Entries may be mailed or hand delivered. ACSA and F3 do not assume responsibility for lost, late, misdirected, and illegible entries, all of which shall be disqualified.

Criteria for Judging:

 

Entries will be judged on originality and creativity used to capture and depict the contest themes of Every Student Counts and Celebrate Success.

 

Disclaimer:

 

Upon submittal, all entries shall become the property of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) and will not be returned. The Association reserves the right to display the student art at the “Every Child Counts...Celebrate Success” Symposium to be held at the Portola Hotel & Spa and in the ACSA Sacramento office. Award winners will be notified by December 15, 2010. The likelihood of winning depends upon the quality of all other entries as judged by the criteria stated above. Prizes are nontransferable. All prizes will be awarded. Competition is void where prohibited or restricted by law. Winners will be solely responsible for any federal, state, or local taxes.

 

Drawings must be original, not in the public domain, and must not infringe or violate any law or the legal or equitable right of any person or entity, nor contain material that infringes or violates any personal property rights of others or that constitutes defamation, invasion of privacy, an infringement of the intellectual property rights of any third person, or is otherwise unlawful. By submitting a drawing, each student acknowledges his or her understanding of and compliance with these rules. ACSA and F3 reserve the right to disqualify any entry deemed inappropriate at their discretion. ACSA and F3 shall not be responsible for any violation or infringement of the law, or infringement on the personal or intellectual property rights of any third party, by entrant and entrant shall agree to indemnify ACSA and F3 in the event of any such infringement or violation of entrant in connection with this contest.

 

Within 10 days of the date specified in the notification, winners and their parents/guardians, will be required to execute an affidavit of originality, eligibility, and compliance with rules, a release of liability, and a grant of promotional rights, or the prize will be awarded to an alternate winner. Winners must provide a street address where ACSA and F3 can mail the winners a publicity release, affidavit of eligibility, and, if applicable, a tax form.

 

All drawings and all rights to their reproduction become the property of ACSA and F3. They may use, edit, and excerpt these entries for promotional or any other purpose, including placing them online without attribution or compensation, additional or otherwise. ACSA and F3 reserve the right to use scholarship winners’ names and hometowns in any advertising or promotional materials relating to this competition without further notification, permission, or compensation to the winners, except where prohibited by law.

This spring quarter event honors the year's outstanding students. Awards include Departmental Awards, Student Services Awards, Leadership Award, Distinguished Alumni Awards, and Ellen Pinto Finalists.

TCC traditionally celebrates the end of the school year with a Aloha Festival. The new Campus Commons provides a great space to enjoy a day of music, dancing, crafts, food and sunshine!
