An HDR, long exposure, landscape image of Seljalandsfoss in Southern Iceland, on a very wet and windy day.

This was a very tricky image to get as a result of the conditions that day. Keeping water off the filters from the rain and spray was almost impossible. I have done many edits on this image trying to find the right one and I have settled on this and finally decided to upload it now. I wish the sun had been out this day to light up the falls but it was not to be.

Predjama Castle, built in Gothic Style during the Renaissance, in the mouth of a large cave in the Karst Region of Slovenia. The geologic term karst—limestone full of cavernous dissolutions—is derived from the name of this region. The largest cave in Europe—Postojna, a few km down the road—is the day’s destination.

Handel: Un pensiero nemico di pace, from Trionfo del Tempo. Amanda Forsythe & Voices of Music

Un pensiero nemico di pace

fece il Tempo volubile edace

e con l’ali la falce gli diè.

Nacque un altro leggiadro pensiero

per negare si rigido impero

onde il Tempo, più Tempo non è.

—Benedetto Pamphili

A thought, the enemy of peace

Caused fleeting Time to be greedily devoured

And lent him his wings and scythe.

Then another, lighter thought occurs,

to deny the rigid rule,

Then Time itself is no more.

UP No. 5687 is getting an overhaul and change out of its old 4,400 hp 7FDL16 prime mover. Sadly, in a place that once built and rebuilt steam locomotives, this unit is the last locomotive to be overhauled at Burnham before UP closed up the place on February 14, 2016.

The new World Trade Center (WTC) Transportation Hub or Oculus is the design of Santiago Calatrava with an interior the exceeds the cavernous Grand Central Station on 42nd Street. The post 9-11 World Trade Center site is more of a cacophony of designs, whereas the original World Trade Center had a design theme. Certainly the strangest design is Calatrava’s Transportation Hub which can evoke awe to some and to other well as I’ve stated before, it appears to be a cross between a porcupine and a stegosaurus. - [ ] #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotoweek @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace - [ ] #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamrac @tiffen #usaprimeshot @nycurbanism @nybucketlist @nycprimeshot @911memorial @_wtcofficial #oculusnyc

Bolsover Castle, located in Derbyshire, England, has a fascinating history that spans several centuries. Here are some key points:

Medieval Origins:

The castle was founded in the late 11th century by William Peveril, one of William the Conqueror’s knights.

It served as a royal residence during the 12th century under King Henry II and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine.

However, by the mid-14th century, it fell into neglect.

The Little Castle:

In 1612, Sir Charles Cavendish began constructing the “Little Castle” as a retreat from his main seat at Welbeck.

Designed to resemble a Norman great tower, it stands on a promontory with panoramic views.

The interiors, completed by Charles’s son William Cavendish, feature luxurious state rooms, exquisite fireplaces, and colorful murals.

Terrace Range and Royal Visitors:

William Cavendish added the Terrace Range, which overlooks the Vale of Scarsdale.

In 1634, Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria visited Bolsover Castle, where Ben Jonson’s masque “Love’s Welcome” was performed in the Fountain Garden.

Civil War and Restoration:

During the English Civil War, William Cavendish fought for the Royalists but was defeated.

After exile, he returned with his second wife, Margaret, and restored the estate.

The state apartment in the Terrace Range and the cavernous Riding House Range were part of their restoration efforts.

Today, Bolsover Castle remains an extraordinary blend of medieval, Jacobean, and romantic architectural styles, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich past123. If you ever get a chance, consider exploring its remarkable interiors and enjoying the scenic views! 🏰🌟

Monstrosities don't come much more monsterous than this 40 metre high stainless steel monument to Chenggis Khan about 50 Km from Ulaanbaatar. Our guide proudly said that ten years ago there was nothing here. I though there still is nothing here, but I bit my tongue.

The stair leading up to the monument were broken and dangerous, I walked up the grassy slope to the right. Inside the monument the ground floor is a cavernous echo chamber where a band was performing music so deafening I had to go outside until they stopped.

It's possible to go up to stand on a platform on top of the horse's head. The stairway was norrow and had no hand rail. Going up was difficult, coming down was dangerous because so many people were pushing and shoving to get out of the claustrophobic stairs.

This was a wasted day when there was so much more to see in this amazing country. On the upside, we ate a lovely lunch in the restaurant.

Resting on the bridge pillars of the old Great Central route into the much-missed and cavernous Nottingham Victoria station is the relatively new (and rather less substantial) bridge that was purpose built to carry the Nottingham Tramway System over Nottingham Midland station.

Sadly no trams were passing overhead as DB Cargo Tug, unit 60039 'Dove Holes', rolls into platform 3 with a clear road hauling the 12.20pm Toton Sidings - Boston steel 'pig pens' (6E02).

Only the second train-snapping day out this year, courtesy of a visit back to the East Midlands to see family. After recent trips in the car it was nice to let the train take the strain for the first time in over a year. As can be seen from the platforms, while passenger numbers are on the increase, volumes are still well below pre-pandemic levels.

Tafoni results from cavernous weathering, most common along coasts where salts aid in etching holes in rock. Here, at Pebble Beach, where the beach is composed of granules and pebbles instead of sand-sized grains, waves have splashed granules/pebbles into the tafoni.

Being invited inside a large aviary at Parrots In Paradise (an exotic bird sanctuary) was a delight. I'd never been that close to parrots of that size and I was so excited, at first I almost forgot I had my camera in hand. I had just started taking pictures of this Macaw when, with a lift of his/her head, I was suddenly looking into that cavernous mouth. It reminded me of a performer reaching that high note. The sea is my poetry.

I admit I was alittle nervous venturing back to this spot where I nearly got wiped out by a wave a few months ago.

But alas the temptation was too great to stay away.

I was very careful, and waited till the tide had completely gone out. That makes getting the shot I want harder as much fewer waves break over the rocks. I was patient enough to at least capture a few larger waves coming in. Wonderful to watch their creeping appearance in the distance, grow large and larger before splashing over the rocks and cascading in little waterfalls before swirling around in the cavernous sea.

Will catch up with everyone tonight. x

Inside the cavernous St. Peters Basilica it is challenging to take quality photographs. Tripods are not permitted. Here I had a fellow traveler hold me as I stood still and looked almost directly straight up into the dome from beneath. I was afraid of vertigo and falling.

Lighting is a challenge because flash is not permitted and would be useless anyway because of the immenseness of the space. I tried to bracket some shots but this is a single.

This is a low tide only cave at Cape Cove Oregon. The cave is actually not all that big, its the distortion of the lens that is giving the cavernous effect. I love shooting inside beach caves because the light falls into the caves in such interesting ways. Here the light fall off presents such an interesting contrast to the scene. Metaphorical perhaps?

The Rosh HaNikra grottoes are cavernous tunnels formed by sea action on the soft chalk rock. The total length is some 200 meters. They branch off in various directions with some interconnecting segments.

A block north of Heritage Square on the east side of downtown is the old Coconino County Courthouse. Built when Coconino first became a county, this building has served as the political hub since 1895. Despite its importance in administering the second-largest county of the United States, it was "shoved aside" to a random city block during planning, as the grid for downtown had not considered institutional buildings, but was still "by far the most elaborate structure in Flagstaff".  It is an example of Romanesque Revival architecture, but the "small-town version", featuring "heavy masonry construction, cavernous window and door openings, an impressive square tower, [and] round-arched windows that reflect the Roman architecture of Europe", with the arched entryway "probably its most distinguishing architectural feature".  In 1956, a modern International Style addition to the building was added, which was contentious from the start not only in style but also for clashing in style with the rest of the city; it was replaced. During the colonial era in Africa, occupied by European nations, there were two Somalias. One located in what is known as the "Horn of Africa" and belonging to Italy, the so-called Italian Somalia. To the north of it, France colonized a small territory known as French Somalia, which when it gained independence from France was renamed Yibuti in French or Djibouti in Arabic. It is a little-known country, despite the great beauty and diversity of its landscapes. Plenty of desert, volcanic landscapes, slightly mountainous areas, landscapes of ancient volcanic lava flows mixed with arid or desert areas, extinct volcanoes, lakes like Lake Assal, the saltiest lake in the world, located 155 meters below sea level. Or an enormous variety of marine landscapes, mixed with volcanic landscapes and white sand beaches. Being such a small country, the variety of landscapes is immense; it's like a tiny representation of the entire planet concentrated in a small place. In the south of the country lies the Grand Bara Desert, a mixture of desert and extremely arid areas. The Grand Bara Desert was formed from the remains of dry lakebeds that were once lakes, and is now completely arid plains in central and southern Djibouti. In the south of the Grand Bara Desert lies the Goba'ad region and the Grand Bara Depression. The Goba'ad is a plain with narrow "wadi," the Arabic term used to refer to dry channels or ephemeral rivers that only have water during the two or three months of intense rainfall, typical of desert areas. In the south of the Grand Bara Desert, this occurs from late June to September... after which... the rain stops. Rainfall is scarce in Djibouti, and the interior of the country is very hot and dry, so most of the territory is desert or semi-desert. The Goba'ad is located between the Hanle Plain and Lake Abbe, the saltiest lake in the world. The Goba'ad plain and the arid depression of the Grand Bara separate the volcanic zone in this region from the arid zone. The volcanic part of the landscape is formed by extinct lava flows that flowed through these areas from the now-extinct northern volcanoes in past millennia. This clearly defines and clearly distinguishes both the arid and volcanic zones. During the rainy season, water flows across the divide between the two separate zones, or else it follows the path formed by the extinct volcanic lava flows, eroding them and transforming them into an increasingly smooth surface. In contrast, in the arid zone, the clay that makes up this area is poorly drained and sometimes water accumulates during the rainy season, giving rise to the ephemeral growth of some scattered grass or bushes... and very little else... rather little... little...

Nujabes was a Japanese musician and DJ, well-known in his country but somewhat less so abroad due to his short discography and his untimely death. His name was Jun Seba, a first and last name he combined, written in reverse order in Japanese, to create his own anagram: Nujabes. His music had a touch of melancholy and nostalgia. What I value most about him is his enormous ability and creativity to blend musical genres as distant as hip hop and jazz. I also liked the "character" Nujabes, especially his reflections on creativity and love. One of Nujabes's best-known songs is titled "Aruarian." This word has no translation into any language, nor is it officially recognized by the linguistic institutions that regulate the different languages of each country. However, it is included in so-called "urban dictionaries." The word was coined and invented by Nujabes in relation to his reflections on love. The word has a meaning that goes far beyond what is conventionally known as "love." The meaning of "Aruarian" is that of a very deep, almost instinctive connection with another person. A "cavernous love" that one feels for someone without any reason, logic, or motive. Once, reading an interview with Nujabes in a Japanese music magazine, I was surprised to read what he felt when he walked through Shibuya, a well-known area of Tokyo that is always crowded with people, bustling with activity, and fast metropolitan highways. He explained that when he walked through Shibuya, he felt like he was walking through a desert where there was nothing and no one. I suppose everyone who lives in large metropolises has experienced this feeling at some point: feeling surrounded by so many people and yet feeling so alone and misunderstood in life. From today on, these hundreds of square kilometers of the Grand Bara Desert will be called the Little Nujabes Desert. I don't think any Djiboutian would be bothered by a symbolic change of name for this small patch of desert, where there is nothing and no one. So Nujabes can continue wandering alone through these desert places in search of a "cavernous" and profound love, and sleep and rest forever. I'm not going to ask Google Maps to include this name on its satellite map... It's enough for me that it's called this way, in a unique and symbolic way for me... the "Little Nujabes Desert." In 2010, right in the Shibuya area of Tokyo, on one of its fast-moving metropolitan highways, Nujabes had a very serious traffic accident, dying at the age of 36... losing his life, his search for Aruarian, his walks through the Shibuya desert... and forever losing an entire life yet to be lived.

The Jubilee Line extension, built in the late 90s, produced some of the most brilliant modern public transport architecture around. Possibly the most interesting is the cavernous lower hall of the Jubilee Line at Westminster. There is nothing pretty or elegant about it, it is simply testament to concrete as brute force, shaped and braced to hold back mother earth itself. Brutalist it may be but you only have to stop and look around you when you walk across this space to know it is something special. Personally I love it. The structure in the photo is one of the many lateral braces that stretch across the expanse of the hall holding the walls in place.

I loved science, and yet I had discovered a whole other realm of reality, one that could not be accessed by formulas or equations but by stripping oneself of “self” and entering the dark, cavernous mystery of the human heart. The laboratory of knowledge was now not only in the world of science but in the world of the soul. To find God without, one must find God within.

Even without walls and a roof, the place felt cavernous. Essentially just a frame, I still found it all incredibly interesting- thoughts of what would be filling my head. This early on in the adventure, I think Michael and I were very aware that we may well have already been seen. When that's the case, the first 10 minutes are usually a rush of trying to get the most 'important' shots first.

The C-5M Super Galaxy is a strategic transport aircraft and is the largest aircraft in the US Force inventory. Its primary mission is to transport cargo and personnel for the Department of Defense.

The C-5M has a large, visor-like door at the nose that opens upwards, creating a large opening for cargo loading.

This nose door, along with the standard aft cargo door, allows for drive-through loading, meaning cargo can be moved in and out of the aircraft from both ends simultaneously. This feature is crucial for the C-5M's role as a strategic airlifter, enabling it to quickly load and unload large amounts of cargo, including oversized items.

The C-5M can also "kneel" (lower its suspension) to make it easier to load and unload cargo, especially when using ramps or other ground-based loading equipment.

The C-5M is a massive aircraft, and the nose opening is large enough to accommodate vehicles and other large equipment.

Like a lot of places in Southern Germany Bad Friedrichshall grew rich on salt mining. Indeed, places ending with "hall" regularly indicate the presence of former salt mines.

While for most places, salt mining is a thing of the past, Bad Friedrichshall still has an operational salt mine. During the summer - on weekends and public holidays, it's also open to visitors. Some of the cavernous places in the mines have been converted to other uses. One of them is an underground chapel - complete with a church pulpit and a shrine plus some illuminated structures of salt. It's quite magnificent. Unfortunately, I could not quite capture the vastness of the place with the camera.
