I'm so sick of you having this effect on me.
I'm tired of being afraid of you.
I'm angry, hurt, betrayed.
I'm replaced and forgotten.
I'm loved.
I'm wanted and needed.
I'm healing.
I'm impatient...

“We cannot live
for ourselves alone.
Our lives are connected
by a thousand invisible threads,
and along these sympathetic fibers,
our actions run as causes
and return to us as results.”
~Herman Melville
Snapped this without having anything in mind, actually.
I don't know. I just felt blank and kind of afloat today.

The message in this book is important for everyone...perhaps ages 2 to 102.
(Should be required for every student...speaks about bullying, forgiveness, and friendship.)
Great opening quote in book:
"We cannot live only for ourselves.
A thousand fibers connect us
with our fellow men;
and among those fibers,
as sympathetic threads,
our actions run as courses,
and they come back to us as effects."
-Herman Melville
I retain a business address at a Post Office Box. That goes back a long way and I've never bothered to give it up. If I'm honest, it's just too much trouble to sort out telling the world I'm somewhere else.
While I was clearing my mail, I was reminded of a conversation I had with Jim Frazier about the price of postage. His forecast of inflation has been made real.
On reflection, and it was unavoidable here in this foyer, I was taken back to the where and when, before I needed the inconvenience of a Post Office Box.
You see, I was surrounded by drunks. Not your ordinary drunks; full-time professionals. The couple on one side were his and hers drunks.
On the other, that drunk was an older beater of a sober wife with an equally sober father. None of that stopped him from driving home so sozzled that he left his ute running and burnt down his machinery shed. I was going to say "while he slept it off". But of course, he avoided hangovers by never drying out. He was mostly harmless, except to his wife, or when he shot your dog, or bailed you up with his rifle or shotgun. The saviour in such matters was that each firearm was single shot. If you stepped behind his father, who he never shot but even if he did, you would get the upper hand pretty quickly.
Those his and hers drunks had a few neglected children. Last I heard the parents had drunk themselves to death, the boys were in prison, the elder girl who I'd helped to escape to school had broken ties, and what became of the little one is a mystery to this day. It was a minor inconvenience when the kids made off with some poultry. At least then they were fed. It was more of a problem if they broke into the house, as they did before I surrounded it with a high fence and mighty hounds. But when my mail deliveries began evaporating from my RMB, it was time to do something about it. That's the why, when and where of my adventures with a Post Office Box; oh that and the incident where my acquaintance who had advertised his location, came home and found his stud dogs had been stolen.
Is drinking a problem down on the farm? Quite possibly. I remember a fellow who would disappear to town and stay there until the drink ran out. Except it never did. His enterprising wife collected up all of the keys to the vehicles. Remember, in the bush you didn't lock the doors to your house or take the keys from the ignition of your vehicle. She hadn't bargained that he would climb into the header and drive it up the highway! Yeah, I think maybe there was a problem…
Now, of course, instead of taking the header to town, and if you can afford it, you can order your drinks on-line and have them delivered by the Post Office!

When I was in elementary school, my parents introduced me to Anne McCaffrey's Dragonrider series. I was hooked from the first book (Dragonsinger). I then read the entire series over the next few years. My parents originally only let me read Dragonsinger and Dragonsong. I found Moretta in my middle school library in 6th grade and they then let me read the rest of the series.
The reason for this background and how it relates to the photo: Every year in the fall, I get the urge to read at least one book from the Dragonrider series. The sun starts to show up at a particular angle that my mind responds to with the message: "You really want to read a Dragonrider book....". I've no idea why this happens, but it is the reason that most autumns I end up reading at least one book from the series. I know I will do so again this fall. I'm already starting to feel that pull. Weekend mornings are the worst because the sun filters in at just the right angle.
Do any of you have anything like that, or am I just really, really weird?
