Exhibition Review - Cathy Haynes, Nancy Holt, Hannah Lees, Zoë Paul, Claire Potter: 'Overlay' White Rainbow, London till 20th September 2016.

“There, all snarled up in a mesh,

smothering and sowing,

- an invoking."

- Drenched Co.

Comment: "To me this exhibition is about matrices i.e. the environments or materials within which something develops, is cast or shaped. Here, there is everywhere evidence, of the Great Goddess, a medium between nature and humanity, guiding not the shaping of matter, but its resurrection. And these matrices, these 'situations', are especially embedded in Nancy Holt's multiplicity of images, in Cathy Haynes' forest of words and months, in Hannah Lees' tablets and altarpiece, in Zoë Paul's staging and Claire Potter's script. Subtle and fabulous. " - JayZee

CHRONOVISOR: ARCHIVE

South Kiosk, London

15 May-20 June 2014

Installation photo courtesy the artists and South Kiosk © 2014.

It shows works by Mirko Smerdel (prints on wall, far left and right), Cathy Haynes (5 images, centre of wall), Rowena Harris (concrete sculptures), Patrick Hough (video), Johann Arens (floor vinyl).

The Chronovisor was a viewing machine whose eye could apparently travel through time, displaying images and footage of different moments throughout history. It was allegedly created in the 1960s by the Venetian Roman Catholic priest Father Pellegrino Ernetti who worked alongside twelve supposedly world famous scientists. Ernetti described how, crowded around their invention, the group watched speeches by Mussolini and Napoleon, scenes from ancient Rome, even the last days of Christ. However he slipped away from the public eye when it was suggested that their photo of Christ on the cross was a reversed image of a postcard from the Santuario dell'Amore Misericordioso. Somewhere in the Vatican could exist an archive of results and research material that might offer clues to the existence and/or mechanics of the Chronovisor.

Having attempted to construct an interpretation of Ernetti's machine in a previous exhibition, South Kiosk now returns to the thematic of the Chronovisor to explore time and artifice through an archive made up of problematic evidence.

Point of Divergence One: before breakfast conversations

Published on the occasion of before breakfast we talked about the furthest visible point before it all disappeared 27 June - 26 July, 2014 at Tenderpixel, London.

Point of Divergence acts as an open space to share research material and ideas, unfolding the themes of the exhibition.

Within, the pages provide space for artists to revisit research and expand from a point in which the trajectory diverged, giving potentiality for a new trajectory and a tapping into lost fertile ground. Alongside is a conversation between the members of Tenderpixel and Tenderbooks (Borbála Soós, Stella Sideli, Lucia Garavaglia and Rowena Harris, respectively) which alludes to the diverse exhibition research.

Functioning much like placing a word within a circular form to see more clearly it’s anagrams, the design of the publication is fluid, dynamic and changeable. Resonating around a share interest, the artist’s work is stirred together to created a mixing pot in which a new trajectory for the development of new work may develop.

Included within is the exhibition hand-out.
