Catfish days fireworks at North Island Park in Wilmington, IL

Had a great outing at Sandy Ridge Reservation Metro Park this morning tagging along with a seriously good wildlife photographer. As soon as we entered the marsh he pointed out this GBH who had speared a large catfish. The heron flipped the fish in its mouth and swallowed it whole. Still a neophyte, I missed that shot - my friend didn't. Livin' and learnin'.

Tiny Bristle-nose Catfish (& guppies) in our aquarium.

I took a little drive, stopping at a small boat access to a lake. I was just in time to catch a Great Blue Heron flying into shore with, what turned out to be, a catfish.

Had to shoot from the van but got some good shots before he swallowed it and flew away.

Part of what turned out to be a banner day of railfanning was the NS 9356 leading this westbound stack train on the UP. With so many of these units getting rebuilt, repainted, stored, and/or scrapped, dare I say that these "original" NS Catfish are becoming rare? At least in these parts, I'm not seeing nearly as many as I had in the past. Shoot 'em while you can!

Bad day to be this catfish...

This is a photograph of a male anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) in breeding plumage captured as it tossed its fresh catch. The anhinga was having some difficulty accommodating the catfish just right and in so doing put on quite the show as it tried to swallow its meal. This photograph was made at Shark Valley, Everglades National Park.
