Meet our newest Melissa's Kitties' member, Tyrone!
He is about 2 months old and used to live in a sewer drain pipe. A good samaritan who works at the post office in Alliance, Ohio, discovered and rescued him and his two siblings and found each of them safer homes. Tyrone moved into my parents' garage on September 17.
So far, he enjoys playing and playing and playing and playing and playing and sleeping and eating and playing. He spends most of his days exploring his new surroundings. When he venture outdoors, he fearlessly races through the yard and climbs trees. In an effort to harness his attack-and-conquer approach to flowers, Mom is teaching him how to garden properly. In the evenings, he helps Dad with his woodworking projects. When Tyrone's ready to crash, he'll find and climb into whoever's lap is closest.
When we first met earlier this month, I introduced Tyrone to all sorts of music and movies and left him some good books to read once he learns how. He should be up to speed with the other Kitties any time now. A quick learner, he has already identified Art Carney, Richard Pryor, Jackie Robinson, Dave Grohl, Mandy Patinkin, and Mohammad Ali among his heroes. (We'll get to the ladies eventually, but right now he thinks girls are gross.)
When asked recently how he likes his new digs, he responded, "It's better than the sewer." That's the truth!
I came back from a long weekend at home in rainy Ohio to sunny early summer in D.C. The Kitties are so excited about this week's warm weather that Simon dug out one of his old circus bikes, perfectly fitted for nine riders.
They caused quite a few traffic jams when they took it out for a spin yesterday. I'm not sure who was charge of the brakes.
One of my favorite Christmas movies is Scrooge (1970), a musical version of the classic Charles Dickens tale. No one plays an the old miser better than Albert Finney! On Christmas Eve, Jacob Marley (Alec Ginness/ Gordon) pays Mr. Scrooge a visit to help him save his soul. Overnight, he is visited by three ghosts: The Ghost of Christmas Past (Edith Evans/The Mother Kitty), The Ghost of Christmas Present (Kenneth More/B.J.), and The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come (Paddy Stone/Simon). Remembering his happier past and seeing his bleak future, Mr. Scrooge has a miraculous change of heart: he learns the true spirit of Christmas and that sharing his wealth and his heart brings riches far better than any amount of gold. It's a good lesson for all of us.
Whenever I try packing for a trip, I always find something unexpected in my luggage. As much as I want to bring her with me, I'm afraid she'd never make it through security.
Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) was the most famous political lampoonist and caricaturist of his age – the era of King George III. He's probably best known for his engravings for the hugely successful 'Doctor Syntax' series of books, written by William Combe, which recounted the escapades of a fictional English clergyman and schoolmaster. In conjunction with other satirists such as Gillray and Cruickshank, Rowlandson also created the character of John Bull as a personification of the United Kingdom.
This original engraving of The Revd Doctor Syntax was published in January 1823 by Rudolf Ackermann (1764-1834) of 101 Strand, London – one of the leading quality publishers of the day.
Rowlandson's London house (and a little more information about Dr Syntax) is here.
This three cat hand drawn candle holder with hand poured candle wax was created using high fire stoneware ceramics and colored with various types of glazes. I melted the Soy wax and slowly poured into the hand crafted vessel and finally applied the Blueberry Muffin scent to the melted wax before it hardened.
This will lighten up any room, hallway, patio or bathroom with this very whimsical, silly cat drawings. Once the wax has been consumed, you can use the container as a succulent or cacti holder or to store any precious items.
Item Details:
• Stoneware ceramic
• Various glazes
• Soy Candle wax
• Cotton Wick
• Blueberry Muffin Scent

Nimbus was such a character and always surprising me with his antics. This is one of my quick sketches. It took only about 2 hrs. Most of my drawings take over a week.

The winner of six Oscars, including one for Best Picture, An American in Paris is a classic MGM musical everyone should see. Directed by the great Vincent Minelli, the story follows Jerry Mulligan (Gene Kelly), a struggling painter who falls in love with a young French girl named Lise (Leslie Caron). Although they spend all of their spare time together, neither knows what happens when they are apart. Jerry is spending hours preparing for his first exhibition, organized by a rich sponsor (Nina Foch) who has a crush on him. Lise, meanwhile, is engaged to a cabaret singer--a friend of her parents who cared for her during the war. Don't worry, it all turns out okay.
Amidst all this drama, of course, is some fantastic music and wonderful dancing. In one dance number, Jerry teaches the neighborhood children some English. He starts by pointing out objects on the street, moves on to singing "I Got Rhythm" with them, and then--Well, B.J.'s got it down.
Sadly, I couldn't embed the song and dance on my blog for your viewing pleasure, but you can find it on YouTube here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpxTA47DCWs&feature=youtu.be

I know it's Christmastime, but I'm a little behind in posting my Illustration Friday drawings. Haunt was the topic for the last week of October.
At the time, I had just seen Tim Burton's Frankenweenie and was completely inspired to create Frankenweenie Kitties. Then, while in San Francisco, my friend and I caught a bit of Young Frankenstein, one of our favorite movies, on TV.
So, here's a mix of both: Comet is "The Monster" (with a heart of gold). Ashes is his bride. B.J. is Dr. Frankenstein with Simon assisting as Igor and The Mother Kitty providing musical accompaniment as Frau Blucher. (Oops, I set off the horses.)
another drawing of a sphynx cat. yeah, a sphynx a day...
sorry for the scan quality and cropping, the image was too large for the scanner.
yeah, and here's the photo I used as a reference www.flickr.com/photos/redheadjokes/2908047245/
When Ashes first arrived, she made Comet quite anxious. Eventually, though, he warmed up to her and now they are great pals. Finally, something other than worry gets Comet's heart racing.

When we were little, Dad made sure that my sister and I got a proper education: We grew up watching all episodes of Monty Python's Flying Circus on PBS. So, the first and only interesting thing I could think of upon seeing this week's Illustration Friday topic, "Tall," was John Cleese exclaiming to Michael Palin, "I'll do what I like because I'm 6-foot-5, and I eat punks like you for breakfast!"
Here is our Kitty tribute to that skit. Who else but Monty Python would think to build it around archaeologists of the 1920s with an obsession slightly more important to them than digging for ancient relics?
It seems The Kitties need a tie-breaker for their contest. While the winning team is determined, you can watch the full Monty Python skit on my blog, here: melissaconnolly.blogspot.com/2012/08/tall.html.
I think Terry Jones may be the scene-stealer in this one. Enjoy!
I just finished this one recently. Tyrone made his way to the top, of course. He's a climber. This illustration was partly inspired by another piece of golden artwork that I have on my living room wall, which is made completely of fabric by local artist Jamie Langhoff. You can see it here: melissaconnolly.blogspot.com/2014/08/golden.html. Check out her website, Seeing in Fabric (www.seeinginfabric.com) to see more of her amazing work.
An enthusiastic helper, Tyrone adds some flair to Simon's latest contraption. While their project in the garage remains a mystery, this collaboration is bound for glory.
Today, The Kitties decided to throw an '80s costume party. Ashes decides to be Pee-Wee because she loves The Dance. Mother Kitty comes as Olivia in an effort to also get a workout. B.J. claims that the "B" in "B.J." stands for Billy Idol. Norman shows up as Devo because it gave him the excuse to empty the flowerpot in the other room. Gordon doesn't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career (or process anything sold, bought, or processed). Unable to pin down a defining look for Duran Duran, Simon offers to sing all of their songs, whether the kitties want to hear them or not. Meanwhile, Comet is glued to the television, as MTV is having an '80s video marathon.

Everyone who knows me finds out pretty quickly that I'm hopelessly devoted to Johnny Depp. (Is it my massive Johnny DVD Library or my fantastic ability to relate any topic of conversation to a Johnny Story?) Last year while in New York to see a play, I knew he was in town to receive an award. I made a card for him--just in case a miracle happened--to thank him for...oh so many reasons. Unfortunately, that weekend, it wasn't meant to be, so The Kitties came back home with me. To give these poor unseen kitties a glimmer of light, here it is.
For my Johnny Card, I incorporate several of his characters and films--in front, Simon climbed the water tower from What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, The Mother Kitty dressed up as Don Juan DeMarco, and Gordon, of course, tackled "Captain Jack" of The Pirates of the Caribbean For inside the card, Simon wanted to play "Sam" from Benny and Joon, The Mother KItty stole the angora sweater from Ed Wood, and Gordon is taking over investigative duties for "Ichabod Crane" in Sleepy Hollow. Thanks to "Edward Scissorhands" for all the leafy props and wintery scenery. I could have drawn more from the eclectic collection of characters, but I ran out of space and kitties. Maybe someday, I'll get lucky, thank Johnny in person, and finally hand this over.
Note: See the next image for the inside of the card.

The Mother Kitty studies The Funhouse Mirrors at every amusement park she visits. I think she's on the verge of figuring them out.
This happens every time we watch The Wizard of Oz at my sister's house. For all of you who want to sing along and practice the speech in front of your own mirror (it works for Comet), here's the real thing: youtu.be/Ak3J5DayiCk. Enjoy!
After a while away from yoga class (because I don't believe in going to class when it's a triple-digit oven outside), I started up again last week. As usual, I realize how much I've missed yoga within the first five minutes of practice--even if I feel like a creaky old lady. One of my favorite poses is Triangle.
Here, Mini demonstrates it:
- Place your back foot parallel with the back of your mat and your front foot toward the top of your mat, pointed ahead.
- Outstretch your arms, facing toward the top of your mat.
- Reach your front arm as far as you can before bending from the hip and placing your hand on your shin, ankle, or foot.
- Stretch your opposite arm toward the sky.
- Turn your gaze upward.
- Breathe.
- Use your core to lift and stretch in these opposing directions, maintaining your balance, as if between two panes of glass.
Be sure to do both sides!
Ahhh, refreshing!
Lately, most of the news is bad out there, so this week's Illustration Friday topic, peace, made me instantly think of John Lennon's iconic song, "Give Peace a Chance." But I'm actually more familiar with Sean Lennon's 1991 version, which was produced by Lenny Kravitz and performed by a slew of musicians from varied genres. The video (youtu.be/c79vlb6lBLY) was on MTV a lot at the time, and I was excited that the song was back and updated for a new generation.
How do I still remember all the lyrics so automatically? Sadly, this song–now nearly 25 years old–is still pretty accurate, but it's a good one! All together now...

Norman really loves his Halloween costume this year. No one is sure when he's planning to take it off.
Comet donned this disguise for a while after he saw Superman. He gave it up, saying it only worked 2.7% of the time. He figures he just couldn't match Christopher Reeve's charm. While that is a tall order, we know Comet never lacks in charm. So, I suggested that it was more likely the tail that gave him away. Encouraged, he's back to researching this method.
I waited a few days, but I couldn't get the song by Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer--or the dance by Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire--out of my head.
Rita Hayworth is best known for her femme fatale character in Gilda, but I knew her first as a fantastic dancer in Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire musicals. When I finally saw Gilda, I preferred her sunny side.
In You Were Never Lovelier (1942), Rita plays the second-eldest daughter of a wealthy Argentine family. Her father (Adolfe Menjou) wants his four daughters to marry in order, but Rita--having not met anyone interesting yet--is holding up the line. To speed things along, he sends her flowers and gifts from a secret admirer and plans to find her a suitable husband later.
Meanwhile, Fred Astaire shows up looking for work, and Rita--of course--falls for him. Her father does not approve! Oh, the drama!
Most musicals are the same. You know how things will end and that you'll feel all warm and fuzzy inside. But the joy is in getting there: the cheesy lines, the music, the dancing. It'll all make you smile!
See Rita and Fred's wonderful performance of "I'm Old-Fashioned" from You Were Never Lovelier on my blog here: <a href="http://melissaconnolly.blogspot.com/2010/09/im-old-fashioned.html". Fred Astaire once said that Rita was his favorite of all his dancing partners. What do you think?
Here, The Mother Kitty and B.J. give us their version of that performance.

I'm sad to report that Norman passed away last month, having succumbed to his mounting health problems. When he was just 5 weeks old, Norman joined our family—whether we wanted him or not. He knew a good thing when he saw it and chased my sister Julie as she rode her bike down a country road, minding her own business! When she heard his frantic cries for a lift, of course, she swooped him up and took him home. How could you deny this face?
Over the years, Norman shared Julie's home with fellow Kitties Comet, Ashes, B.J. and Mini, and (as you know) he didn't always get along with everybody. It's clear now that they all had steadfast camaraderie. Even Ashes, who never failed to complain at the sight of Norman, was by his side at the end.
The rough exterior, bullying, and sometimes psychotic behavior that earned Norman his name masked an inner sweetness that couldn't be denied. Who can forget his dramatic entry into our lives and the early daredevil stunt he pulled, flying off the cat tower for a dangling toy without a second thought about where he'd land? (Check out my depiction of that moment here.) Then, there are all those times he curled up next to (or on) us, sharing the warmth of his silky fur coat. All Norman wanted in life was some attention, good food, playtime with his pal Liam (my nephew), and a comfy lap to sleep on. Doesn't everybody?
Well, he got plenty of it from us in his adventurous 16 years. Norman will be sorely missed, but he'll always live on in our hearts—and for as long as I have some markers and paper. (See some photos of Norman in my blog post here: melissaconnolly.blogspot.com/2014/03/norman-1998-2014.html.
This is a late tribute to the smartest and sweetest of all gorillas. My sister and I grew up watching Koko, amazed by her capacity to learn and love. She was friendly with everyone, including cats. Here, she and Comet are enjoying the day.

Sadly, Cyd Charisse, one of my favorite ladies, passed away this week. Knowing she was in her mid-80s didn't stop me from gasping when I read the news.
I first saw her in Brigadoon, opposite Gene Kelly, when I was 10, convinced that there was nothing more beautiful than the two of them twirling among the heather in that little Scottish town. I've been hooked ever since. A mesmerizing dancer, she commands your attention with her confidence, grace, and electricity. On and off the screen, she was pure sophistication and elegance.
Be sure to catch her in some of her best musicals--Silk Stockings, Singin' in the Rain, The Band Wagon). Her dancing will make you smile. If you're already in a good mood, she'll put you in a better one. Thank you and farewell, Wonderful Cyd! I miss you.
