...in analog memories

---

Sunset has come and the little (well, you know...) boy has returned from playing with some of his favorite toys.

Secretary is off for some days to explore the world.

True and investigative journalism, the attempt to bring the truth to light, was and is always necessary. But it is also always under pressure and seems to be so these days in a frightening and increasing way. This still life is a small (and somewhat naïve) tribute of the Secretary...

Although Edna is a young dragon (young for a dragon, of course), she has already experienced a lot and knows a lot to tell. In the right setting, she quickly starts chatting. You can be sure that everything she tells you has happened. And exactly like this - or at least similarly. And if not, then it could at least have happened. And exactly like this - or at least similarly...

In the silence and seclusion of his small room in a small guesthouse with only (and for this season last) guest, Secretary sorts out the events and memories of the day, feeling almost like a monk in his monastic cell...

Eine kleine Hommage an John le Carré (Bemerkung: Einer von le Carré‘s bekanntesten Romanen ist "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy" (deutsch: Dame, König Ass, Spion))

Interesting seems to be going on at the neighboring table...

A little homage to John le Carré (Note: One of le Carré’s most famous novels is "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy")

The UHER CR 210 stereo is a 4-track cassette recorder of the UHER-Werke Munich and was probably produced from 1974-1979. With a stately weight of 2kg not exactly manufactured in lightweight construction, it was thanks to professional features and functions such as Auto Reverse not only a device for (well-heeled) private users, but was also used in the professional field, such as for reports and interviews, as well as by authorities and intelligence services. The users included, for example, the Ministry for State Security (Ministerium für Staaatssicherheit, MfS) - better known as the State Security Service (Staatssicherheitsdienst, Stasi) - of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). Secretary once called two devices from this particular pre-owner his own, but they had been significantly modified and were quite worn out. This specimen, purchased second-hand, probably had a wholly civilian past life.

He no longer had a choice.

Endlessly, it seemed to him, he had pondered, written, pondered, changed, discarded everything and started again. He had lost most of his friends, they had been shocked by his thoughts, they seemed too hard and too radical, he himself had become increasingly quirky and also somewhat embarrassing. Some of them also saw their own skins swimming away if he was successful. But no one would admit that, of course, in fact they would all deny it. Wonderful friends they had been; just lucky he was rid of them. He had also broken with his family (those petty bourgeois spitballs!). He was the one who had broken with them, he attached great importance to that.

In a few moments, he would adjust the microphone, start the recording, do a speech test, listen to the result, perhaps correct it a little and try again. He knew about the power of language, of the spoken and heard word. It was important to him not just to say the right thing. His sonorous, even charismatic voice should also play its part.

He would visit the bathroom again. Then he would finally sit down, take a sip of water and breathe deeply. Then he would switch the recorder to record and...

First came bewilderment, then rage - sheer, cold rage. He finally silenced the receiver with a punch. It wouldn't have taken much and he would have swept the apparatus off the table with a wave of his arm.

It should have been the first news, perhaps even the only one. He had wanted to enjoy listening to everything on the foreign radio, in his long previously chosen place of escape in this banana republic (although did any country deserve this description more than the one he had left less than two days ago?) He had wanted to enjoy listening to everything and personally preserve it for later generations, all relaxed over his favorite whisky. But nothing had come of it, not a single word. Just the usual, irrelevant mishmash of puffed-up trivialities.

The authorities, he had realized immediately after he had regained some composure, had suppressed the reporting, as they did with everything else that was really important. But it wouldn't be possible to keep this up for long. In a few hours at the latest, perhaps in the next news program, it would come, it would HAVE to come and then dominate the headlines of the newspapers and all the TV channels as well, no question about it. And the news tickers of the agencies would carry it all over the world.

One thought never occurred to him in his grandiosity: that he might have made a mistake and the bomb might simply not have detonated.

My Dad's back then state of the art 'music box'. We had an original jukebox in the basement, but it got destroyed by a fire.

This oak monster though is still intact - and functioning I guess.

Nigel (previously 'the stone dead man') suffer sometimes from acute low blood sugar and if he doesn't eat within minutes, he faints.

The little girls however are still under the impression that he's dead and throws him a party as planned. As one should apparently.

Becky: Who still uses a cassette recorder? *Dances merrily.*

Aja: Sindy of course! I'm glad we could figure out how to pop in the cassette tape correctly. This 'Donna Summers' lady rock!

Becky: We should probably say something nice about the dead man. It's his party after all.

Aja: Is he a 'Paul' or a 'Ken' you think? So we can address him I mean. Like; tis Paul was a brave man who liked striped tees.

Nigel: Oow, my head! *Sitting up.*

Both girls: Eeeeek!!

Nigel: Donna Summer? Neat.

Becky: He's a zombie!

Aja: Kill him!

*********************************

Don't worry, they didn't kill him of course. They're too little. Besides, Nigel didn't crave their brains, only a biscuit. Not very zombielike.

Philips Cassette recorder Type 3302 from 1964. The original cassette recorders were only really suitable as dictaphones. They did not have the frequency range to record music properly. However, they quickly got better and in 1966, EMI and Philips began issuing pre-recorded stereo cassettes. I've never used a Dictaphone, I always use my finger like everyone else :-)

Hailing from 1977, this was the infamous computer that you could kill by writing the wrong value to the wrong part of memory (it'd kill the video circuitry).

BeoSound Century CD/Tape/Tuner

Manfactured: 1993 - 2004

Designer: David Lewis

If you want superior sound, but not the size, and a full array of functions but without the complication - then take a look at the BeoSound Century. Designed by David Lewis, it has a very slim depth and brings together CD, tape and FM radio into a slim-line form that can stand by itself or hang from a wall. Everything is operated by buttons that light up to guide you quickly through the various playing options.

BeoSound Century is a clever combination of excellent performance and ease-of-use. This system is known in fact by two different names - BeoSound Century in Europe and BeoSound 2000 in North America. With everything built in, this is the perfect stereo for those who with a limited space as it's only 11cm deep. It's for those who don't want Beolink® capabilities and can be equipped with a handle with a built-in active antenna making it very portable. The speakers use the active construction as that of all BeoLab speakers. In the late nineties the Century was released in a special limited series with polished aluminium instead of the black plastic on the CD holder. This became so popular that it became the standard! There are two different stands available: a wall stand and a special table stand. The unit may also be controlled by the optional Beo4 remote control.

Deep bass

BeoSound Century integrates a powerful sound reproduction system: two active loudspeakers with electronic crossover network and Adaptive Bass Linearisation, for the optimum relationship between bass reproduction and sound pressure level. The very small two-way bass reflex loudspeakers comprise a net volume of only 1,1 litres, but the large front grille gives room for fairly large woofer membrane diameters.

Bass and treble have separate power amplifiers, which means that they can be tailored to compensate for one another's shortcomings and deliver a sound spectrum as close to reality as possible. On top of that, BeoSound Century can play at high volume, but cuts out before it has an opportunity to burn out its units.

The fine art of control of BeoSound Century

The backlit push buttons of the BeoSound Century are cast in opalescent plastic, painted black on the inside and the text is then burnt away with a laser. The light of a diode behind each button is muted for even distribution, and the button is hinged in four places. A sturdy and relatively inexpensive construction, but it takes just a bit more work!

Operation of BeoSound Century

How do you make operation easy when there are 26 buttons to push? On BeoSound Century, only the buttons you need for the specific function will light up and guide you step by step through operations.

BeoSound Century was awarded the Danish Design Centre's IP Prize in 1994.

Wall Bracket for BeoSound Century

This replacement wall mount is designed to give mounting flexibility now that Bang & Olufsen now longer offer a solution. The HiFi simply hooks onto the bracket without the need for securing screws. Powder coated in matt black.

Oh man, such a vivid flashback: this is exactly the model my father bought. Home movies were not ever his bag; so aside from recording my weird babbling I'm not sure what his purpose was. You can tell from those DIN connectors that this is a straight rebadge of the European Philips model.
