Long time no flower image, so here is one of the few I took quite recently with my own Christmas present (yes, I didn’t have much time to take images with it, apart from a few portraits of my nephew’s second birthday): my new Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art. For so long, I was using my beloved vintage lenses even though they lack sharpness, but they have very special characters in terms of their bokeh. However, I was always thinking about upgrading from my Helios 85mm f/1.5, but since I also didn’t have a camera body with Eye AF back then, I decided to save the money.
Since I now have the Sony A7IV which has an amazing Eye AF, the Sigma Cashback during Christmas time caught my attention. And long story short: due to the many positive reviews of this lens, I got myself a copy and I don’t regret it. Having never used Eye AF with a portrait lens before, I was extremely impressed with its performance, and apart from portraits I recently also found some time to shoot the flowers in my parents garden. Even though nothing can beat some grand and otherworldly landscapes, I still love strolling around our garden and searching for the many beautiful compositions that can be found there.
This time, the bleeding heart was blooming, but it took a few minutes until I figured out a beautiful composition. Even though I shot wide open, there were still some distractions from the surrounding plants in the frame. So I stepped back and utilized the flowers and the greenery in the foreground to create some foreground bokeh. Finally, I tried placing the bleeding hearts in the brighter bokeh areas of the illuminated meadow in the background such that they really stand out. All in all, I really like how this image turned out, not only because it’s tack sharp, but also because it has that painterly look I always strive for in my flower images. I hope you like it too!

My mom says I'm an atypical Eastern European woman because every female we know spends money on herself. My financial history from my teenage years has left me anxious about paying more when I could spend less. The last time I took this plane route was in 2019 before the world went mad, and I didn't jump for joy when Delta had a mask on the flight. And it was April. Sometimes you have this feeling as if you are missing something like a part of the body. It’s no longer there and you think it is. I remember that from speaking to a patient at NYU in 2007 or 2008. I wonder if U2 felt the same pulling this album off the shelf years later. Funny how you can make a connection with something special only after that time period is gone.

first shots with the x-pro1 and the fuji x-mount 35mm f1.4 lens. this is an upgrade from my leica m8 which is really showing it's age now...I'm not joking! I got the camera plus the 18/2 and 27/2.8 lenses for £699 which is ridiculously good value for money. first impressions are promising especially in terms of picture quality. Focussing with either autofocus or manual focus with focus peaking has been a real challenge so far. Autofocus is slowish but more of a problem is that it often misses focus. The manual focus ring on the lens doesn't have focus stops which is a real annoyance for me and it has a very long throw. So far I really don't see the point of the OVF as there is no proper rangefinder focussing mechanism as this is not a rangefinder camera, it just looks like one! And the EVF can be quite laggy. But I knew all about all of this stuff before I bought it and I'm enjoying using it nevertheless. Despite feeling a bit plasticky, the 35mm f1.4 lens is excellent and an absolute bargain at the time of purchase with a £100 cashback deal from fujifilm effectively reducing the price by 25%. Next thing to do is to get an m-mount adaptor so I can stick some of my zeiss and voigtlander lenses on it.

Een nieuw, mooi en verdomd fotogeniek stukje Haarlem. Het wijkje ligt aan het Spaarne, tussen molen De Adriaan en de spoorbrug.
Gemaakt met mijn nieuwe speeltje. Naast mijn 16-35mm en 70-200mm lenzen had ik feitelijk enkel mijn 50mm lens. Hoewel die laatste het gat tussen mijn twee zoomlenzen enigszins opving, miste ik toch het zoombereik tussen 35 en 70mm. Natuurlijk heb ik mijn oude 17-85mm lensje nog, maar de kwaliteit daarvan laat drastisch te wensen over. Toen ik zag dat Canon in de huidige winteractie €180 cashback gaf op de EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM, hoefde ik niet heel lang na te denken. Bovendien heb ik nu eindelijk een lens met macrofunctie. Geen 1x vergroting, want het is geen toegewijde macrolens, maar toch een heel respectabele 0,7x. Het zou zomaar kunnen dat dit de lens wordt die het vaakst op m'n camera zal zitten.
