The Marampa mine is a brownfield haematite iron ore mine located approximately 150km north-east of Freetown in Sierra Leone, West Africa. 100% owned by London Mining, the project includes a 319km² exploration licence that borders the Marampa mining lease, which was mined extensively between 1933 and 1975 by the Development Corporation of Sierra Leone (DELCO). The property was acquired by London Mining in 2006.

Full development of the project began on 11 February 2010 on receiving final parliamentary approval. The project will also include an $80m tailings reprocessing development operation that is expected to result in an output of 1.5Mtpa by 2011. The $85m operation will be expanded in a phased manner to 3Mtpa before production from the primary resource begins. Primary resource mining will increase production to between 5Mtpa and 8Mtpa upon completion of the project, by the end of 2013. Decision on the expansion remains pending in a pre-feasibility study that is scheduled for completion by the end of 2010.

The development will initially be fast tracked into production before expanding to a larger scale, thereby achieving short-term cashflow. The mine has historically operated at a peak production of 2.5Mtpa before it was suspended owing to low iron ore prices in the 1960s.

The runaway garden

6 February 2011 Leave a Comment

The last two weeks have thrown wild extremes of weather at us – wind (read that as howling gales), rain (read that as downpours) and sun (read as, well that round heat generator in the sky). Nothing new you might think for someone living in the Wellington region. But oh no, combine all three and you get a tropical climate like one I’ve never experienced here before.

The garden is of course loving the wet and warmth. Just one week back at work and the kitchen garden has become a runaway leaving me way behind. Things are growing like crazy and it’s hard to keep up. Things are green and lush in unnatural ways for this time of year.

I’m determined to tame it’s exuberance today – or at least get rid of the masses of weeds, harvest the beans and tie up the sweetpeas and put canes in for that third sowing of peas. I can feel the pain in my legs just thinking about all that bending and stretching. But no gain without pain eh?

The cloud

5 February 2011 Leave a Comment

I wandered up from the kitchen garden on Tuesday night and saw this cloud hanging over the hill behind. It was visualisation of what I was feeling. High above that cloud my in-laws were in their plane to Auckland. After weeks of cohabitation we are back to our pack – two of us and two hounds.

It’s fascinating that when I tell people that I’ve had my in-laws to stay. Their eyes roll up and give that grin which says “oh poor you”. It’s sharp knocked off their face when I tell them it’s been great. Lots of fun and wonderful to have had the extra help. I’d go as far as to say that parental cohabitation is a much underrated thing. Or perhaps I’m just still basking in the afterglow of finishing most of my summer chores.

After an extended summer break it’s all go again in the Domestic Executive office. Getting back into the swing of work has not been hard, it’s just the balancing act between domestic and executive has started all over again. Gone are the days of the laundry mysteriously going from the washing machine to the line to the ironing board and back into my closet with me having to do a thing. Back are the days when I have to wear a watch and carry my phone so I don’t miss the commuter run.

I miss the banter, the background noise of the kettle working overtime. The team work in the garden and the kitchen. I miss the long conversations over meals on the veranda and having dog walking companions. The void has created a temporary cloud – the one that points it’s finger at you and says “what do you expect if you move to the other side of the world?”.

Fair point. Cruel but true.

All new, er …. sort of

5 February 2011 4 Comments

I’ve had the drains up here at Domestic Executive HQ. The plumbing was looking a little rotten in places, there were leaks and all manner of gremlins lurking. To flush out the waterworks I have upgraded all the software and put on a new outfit.

I have grand plans but for now I wanted to get the new look up and running before getting too ambitious. That’s code for when I get time I’ll carry on tinkering but for now we’ll make do with what we’ve got.

A quick word for those less tech savvy about finding your way around from the home page:

BIG PICTURES: the rotating big pictures on the front page are some of my favourite pictures and for now they link to a selection of posts e.g. bassets, photography, daily snap. In time they’ll link to my photography galleries.

LITTLE PICTURES: these are the latest posts and you just click on the photo to take you there.

TWITTER FEEDS: these are the micro blog posts of both Martin and I posted on Twitter. Daily thoughts and links we find interesting. Don’t forget to follow if you’re a twitterer yourself.

You can of course use the navigation menus in the usual way. If you want to make it easy on yourself and get the latest posts direct you subscribe through your RSS, Twitter and Facebook from the top bar on the home page.

Hope you like the freshen up. Would love to know what you think. Any complaints see my alter-ego!

Holiday routines

31 January 2011 1 Comment

Kiwi’s tend to binge on holidays. When I started work here in New Zealand I was shocked by the fact that over 50% of people in my department hadn’t had any significant time off work for more than a year. They took just the public statutory holidays and their annual leave entitlement was being squirreled away for a long break which would generally be for a long winter trip overseas or a long holiday at home over the summer. For years it was always my policy to have a holiday every 3 months and not to return from one break without having the next booked or planned for. The thought of not taking a holiday for months on end is not something I could ever contemplate.

Now I am self employed taking a holiday has a whole new perspective – no work means no pay. So whilst I have the option to take more or longer holidays it has to be balanced out with filling the coffers. So last night as I watched the sun dip down behind the hill I sat on the step and mentally worked out my rough cashflow possibilities and the next time I could feasibly take my next break. Today I started back to work after my kiwiesque style long holiday but the first thing I did was mark out in my diary when my next break would be. And then I got stuck in.

Temptation

30 January 2011 1 Comment

For all the chucking out that has gone on in the last week I have a confession to make. When I popped into the Salvation Army Shop to arrange collection of out bits and bobs I saw a massive basket in good nick for only $7. It was the perfect shape and size for loading up goodies from the kitchen garden. I couldn’t resist. It’s served us well so I don’t feel too bad but it does seem a little at odds with my clear out policy. The basket is deeper than the trug which means that it has a marginally better chance of keeping Fortnum’s snout out of the bounty. The temptation is pretty strong though and he can’t help himself but to rest his chin and sniff a while. He is no reformed character though and can’t be trusted where fresh veggies are concerned.

Waste not

28 January 2011 3 Comments

The last week of my “holidays” has been a flurry of activity as my in-laws and I have ploughed our way through the summer projects list. The biggest, scariest and dirtiest of projects has been the source of continued procrastination but with help on hand there was no reason to put it off any longer. This week we’ve cleared, cleaned and reorganised the barn. I finally got around to organising collection of goods for the charity shop; completed a deep clean of cobwebs, mouse droppings and other unmentionable growths; and finally set some boundaries so that everything in the barn had to have a purposeful use with a rightful place.

No more hanging onto stuff in case I might possibly make use of it at some undetermined time in future. No more ditching tools, wheelbarrows and sacks of grain in the first available space. No more tripping over bits of wood, wheelbarrows, bamboo canes and skidding on compost fallen on the floor. I’m proud to say my barn is now a show case of organisation in the true tradition of Shakers who I have long admired for their productivity, design and flair. Tools have hooks, paraphernalia has been consigned to shelves and cupboards and most importantly, all my vegetable growing gear has a new home – a potting bench of mammoth proportions made from a left over workbench and bits of landscaping timber.

I was reflecting on the sorting out the barn whilst walking out with the dogs this morning, in particular and how much effort we’d put in to re-using and recycling when my eye was caught by something bright in the Hutt River. As I got closer I could finally see that what was sitting in the middle was a yellow wheelbarrow. It looks a pretty serviceable barrow too, likely better than the one I have. I contemplated whether to wade out and bring it home. Tempting as it might have been I wasn’t brave enough to face my in-laws who would have most definitely frowned upon me bring more “waste” materials to live in our barn. Shame really, I thought that it was a rather fetching colour. Clearly, whoever dumped it has no conscience nor taste.

A view to sigh for

27 January 2011 3 Comments

I like nothing better at the end of a summer’s day to be able to kick back on the veranda and watch the sun go down. I’ve been reading up on photography at the edges of the day and last night was a perfect night to get out the tripod and put in a little practice. Instead I was dragging along a couple of recalcitrant basset hounds along the back lane in an effort to keep their exercise regime (and mine) up to scratch. It didn’t stop the sunset being a blaze of fire and glory and we managed to catch the best of the view before it dipped behind the hill and we turned for home.

Butter wouldn’t melt. Yeah Right!

26 January 2011 3 Comments

Taking a month off work to crack the summer jobs just isn’t long enough. I have at least another month’s work to do and only a few days left to do it in. Mental note to self to win lotto to be able to take whole of summer off next year. With the frustration of the rains of the weekend banished from my mind we’ve been back building, sorting, creating, weeding and occasionally taking a moment to enjoy the view.

Once I start work I hate to stop. Not because of my work ethic but I find these days is if I stop for long and sit down my body seizes up and like my temperamental lawn mower it is a bugger of a job to get going again. I think Fortnum and I have more in common than I really care to admit.

The golden evening sunshine is one of my favourite parts of the day. After dinner is eaten and the kitchen closed there is nothing better than taking a wander down the garden to just relax. Now we have our new benches the kitchen garden is a destination to sit awhile. The bassets can’t understand this human behaviour after all they’ve spent all day trailing me up and down the garden and faced with a choice of settling on the sofa or trailing me again it’s a tough choice.

They sit at the top of the steps for a while and contemplate the pros and cons before usually deciding they’d better follow. In Fortnum’s case that choice is getting easier and easier since the kitchen garden has become his own personal salad bar.

Lush

The kitchen garden is packed with goodies. Everywhere you turn there is something good to eat. I love my backyard pantry but unlike the one filled with tins of food this one has it’s own mind and can catch you out if you don’t have your wits about you. After the rains everything has blossomed and shines brightly in a way it didn’t on my meagre hose watering. So much to learn but nature is of the hard knocks school and isn’t that forgiving. Every day I see something and think – now what the heck do I do with that now. I trudge back and read my shelf of gardening books and give it a go. With fingers crossed all the time gardening can be a tricky business.
