The Gun Saluting Battery in Valletta, Malta, is located one level below the Upper Barrakka Gardens. The Saluting Battery served both as a defensive and ceremonial platform from where dignitaries and visiting dignitaries to the island were greeted with gun fire. It also doubled as the official public time marker for the island with the firing of three cannon at sunrise, noon and sunset.

The Saluting Battery was started in 1566 as part of the main fortification belt around the city of Valletta. The Battery sits on a strategic point guarding the Grand Harbor of Malta. It is opposite of the Fort of Saint Angelo. Together, these two armed positions could close the harbor to any enemy navies. Besides a defensive role, the Saluting Battery also played an important ceremonial role. It fired gun salutes at national and religious holidays and festivals. The battery also fired salutes to honor visiting dignitaries to the island. Further, important news such as military victories would be announced with a gun salute. After 1814 when Malta was handed over to the British Empire, the Saluting Battery became the responsibility of the British Royal Navy. The battery would be fired to celebrate the Royal birthday and births of new members of the royal family. It was this function that gave the battery its name.

Another job of the battery was to mark the hour by firing at noon and sunset. It would also signal the opening and closing of the city gates. This function continued until the start of the 20th century with the battery firing at noon so the ships in the harbor could synchronize their ships’ clocks.

The guns have a calibre of 24-pounds (14cm), weigh a rough 2.6 tonnes and have a length of 2.91m. They carry the Royal cipher of King George III. When used in active service these guns could be fitted with fore and rear sights on their second reinforce and cascable respectively. All eight guns are original pieces made by Carron Iron Works of Falkirk in Scotland or Samuel Walker & Co., iron founders of Grenoside near Sheffield. They were made between 1790 and 1810.

The first real snowfall arrived this weekend, and, while it will probably melt this week, there has been a shift in the "feel" of the season. Autumn has reached its twilight; winter will soon set in. This image as a bit like that. The sun had set and it was almost dark, yet there was still some rich hues left in the sky that only a long exposure would bring out. I worked to make that happen, and I like the rather vivid result I got after a little extra touch in pp.

Sometimes you gotta shoot close to home. This is the road that runs in front of my house. The light was quickly fading (as it does this time of year in the North), but there was still some wicked purple colors in the sky contrasted with the blue hour look. I didn't have an opportunity to go and shoot somewhere else, so I set up this shot close to home. I wanted the light trails of the passing traffic to mirror the movement in the gorgeous sky above. I knew the long epxosure would make the color sparkle, and it did. Enjoy!

I did this shot to imitate the popular look often used in "superhero" productions. I like the play of light and shadow, and the hint of mystery provided by the anonymous hood. The focus here is on the lips, with the hint of one eye shown by the lashes. This kind of shot is much easier to pull off when using the wi-fi remote shooting on my 6D and the Cascable app that gives me a lot of control over the the camera.

At other times of the year, this is the conjunction of two rivers. This time of year it is a frozen wasteland, a great expanse of white under the purple hues of twilight. Some phenomena has resulted in a little patch of unfrozen water, and this reflected the cold, cobalt blue of the sky above. This area is riddled with tracks of various animals, and we heard an owl hooting nearby, but there was no visible signs of life anywhere. Have a little shiver, turn up the heat, and enjoy the frozen world.

This shot came by grabbing a very narrow window of opportunity. I had only about 15 minutes when I noticed the deep color in the sky after sundown yesterday and saw a great shooting opprotunity. I grabbed my tripod and camera/lens combo and quickly ran out the door. The light was dropping fast, though, and I needed a longer exposure than what the camera natively allowed for. I switched on my phone and connected wirelessly to the camera and used the very cool Cascable app (see my review of it here: bit.ly/1YeYRll) to program the length of exposure I wanted (over three minutes). While the camera fired I used my phone's flash to do some light painting of the building. I went right up to it and painted over it, but then I turned to move away and the camera caught the moving light in the scene - which created the ghost. I liked the end result, though, and so I share it here.

I had an idea to combine a couple of things that I like - namely bokeh shots and splash photography. The challenge of combining these two is that it requires keeping a narrow depth of field (I'm at f/2 here) to get big bokeh highlights, but this means that nailing focus is hard. If you want to read about how I set up this shot and pulled it off, I've blogged about it here: bit.ly/1TWTxCA. I hope this little Valentine's themed image gives you a smile and some inspiration today.

Ever since we took our feeders down due to fear of spreading Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI, or avian flu), this particular mockingbird has been harassing me by perching near me and screaming in my face and by pecking at the windows in our deck door. It is obvious to me that it is complaining about the absence of a free meal.

About the photo: I have sometimes photographed birds through our double-glazed windows, but the results are never fully sharp. For this photo I had the camera on a tripod on the deck with a CamRanger 2 WiFi transceiver attached. I sat inside with the iPad app "Cascable" displaying the camera view and allowing exposure control, focusing, and camera triggering.

One of the things I do a lot of as a part of my reviews (and now photography business in general) is to do product photography. I've been doing quite a bit of work for companies recently, and it is always interesting. I recently did a showdown of a variety of inexpensive Bluetooth earbuds (you can read it here: bit.ly/2buXazT or watch it here: bit.ly/2clTl2W). I'm doing a giveway of a set of Bluetooth buds as a part of the review - so check it out. I used fixed, daylight temp softboxes here and used the WiFi functionality on the 6D to remotely control the camera and take the shots. A new version of the Cascable app that I use to control cameras is out and well worth a look!

Hi everyone. This is a self-portrait I put together yesterday as the title image for a new series I will kicking off on Monday at my YouTube channel (bit.ly/1LLoHLe) called "Ask the Photographer". It will be dedicated to answering more complex questions about photography and gear. The first episode is about the relationship between aperture and autofocus, and why it is a big deal that some new cameras can AF at f/8. Check it out on Monday. I used a green screen for this shot along with a wireless capture controlling a 6D via wi-fi. I used a Tamron 85mm f/1.8 VC for the portrat (@ f/2). I then used the Zeiss Milvus 1.4/50mm to shoot the "book bokeh" in my library to use as the backdrop. I composited the two together after removing the green screen. This image was featured in Flickr's Explore on May 28th, 2016 at position #68

The historic canon at middle north battery Simonstown was fired once on Nov 11 at 11.00 in remembrance of the fallen.

9 Inch RIFLED MUZZLE LOADING (RML) GUN

MIDDLE NORTH BATTERY SIMON’S TOWN

The gun was designed in 1865 as a broadside gun for ironclad ships and harbour seafront defence. A total of 190 were made. The gun was last fired in 1903.. This gun was first mounted in Halifax Nova Scotia until 1878, then at Bermuda until 1881 and then at Sheerness England until 1885. It was mounted at Middle North Battery Simon's Town in 1896 where it still exists. The gun, carriage, slide and mounting were restored in the East Dockyard Gun Shop in 1984

9 inch bore(228.6mm) gun manufactured in 1855/1856. Muzzle loading gun. Barrel is rifled with 6 grooves, the only gun manufactured with this number of grooves. 9 inch shells had 6 rectangular lead protrusions that engaged with the barrel grooves to impart spin and thus stabilise the shell during flight.

Cast steel gun barrel (Mk1) with wrought iron forged breech piece, cascable and trunnion, supported on fabricated steel gun carriage, slide and mounting.

High end Zeiss lenses like the new Milvus 85mm f/1.4 are always wicked portrait lenses. Great bokeh and drawing, intense resolution and contrast, and amazing Zeiss color. One challenge - they are manual focus. So trying to pull off this self portrait at 85mm f/1.4, manually focused on a full frame body, wasn't easy. But I was the subject available, so, here's one of my favorites from the series. Maybe the challenge of pulling it off is what is making me look so grumpy! Check out a lot more great Milvus shots in this gallery here: bit.ly/23xSiOi

Those of you that are portrait photographers can probably relate when I say that there is something oddly intimate about photographing and then processing an image of someone. I'm often struck by it, particularly when it is someone that I know. Today's high resolution lenses and camera sensors render ever pore, every imperfection. I've sometimes been struck by a moment of melancholy as I process a portrait of a friend and realize that the signs of aging that I overlook in everyday life are there. It is strange, too, to process this image. I was going for a very intent, direct look right into the camera. No warmth in the photo, just intensity, as that suited the type of lighting and mood I was shooting for. It is somewhat strange to look so closely into your own eyes, and draw conclusions about yourself. The piercing nature of this shot affects me...and maybe you can relate to something that I've shared, too.

I've got two big reasons to be smiling, here. First is the beautiful lens that I'm using to capture this image (via the Cascable app over wi-fi). I've loved using the the Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 (You can watch my final review here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vL1-CjHplsU or read here: bit.ly/1s7diNQ), and, unlike most of the gear that I review, I am seriously considering adding it to my own kit. The second reason I have to smile is the awesome Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 ART that I'm holding. If you shoot crop sensor cameras and don't mind a bigger lens, then watch for me review of the Sigma at the end of the week! Both of these lenses are something to smile about!

The COVID-19 situation has my emotions running all over the place. Mostly I’m sad... but I go through periods of incredulity, anger, denial and worry. I don’t feel that the people where I live are taking this seriously enough. I worry that the people who I love and care for are in harms way and there is nothing I can do about it other than wash my hands and keep my distance as best I can. The distance makes me feel lonely in a way. I love people. I love helping people. I love talking to people. And though my family is close the distance from others is already getting to me a little. I felt that an introspective self-portrait was in order today. Stay safe and stay healthy everyone.

This is lit with a strip box tilted at a 45 degree angle just out of frame camera left only 18-24 inches from my face. It is mounted to a White Lightning Ultra 600 from Paul C Buff triggered with Pocket Wizards. There are white vertical blinds out of frame camera right reflecting back into the shadow areas. Contrast was increased, the overall look darkened a touch and a subtle warm/cool colour grade done in CaptureOne Pro. Very light spotting done in Photoshop.

Camera is a Fujifilm X-T3. Lens is the Fuji XF 18-55 zoom. Used Cascable from my phone as a remote.

Blomefield design

Thomas Blomefield became Inspector of Artillery, in 1780. Between 1782 and 1785 his department carried out a general reproof of ordnance, he rejected nearly half of them. In 1787 cast iron guns of Blomefield's own design were made. He made three significant alterations to the Armstrong design. Firstly, the breech was made more rounded, eliminating the prominent mouldings. Secondly, the first reinforce was made almost cylindrical, the second reinforce was strongly tapered and the chase strengthened. Thirdly, a ring was added to the cascable which allowed free movement of the breech ropes, used to restrict the gun's recoil aboard ship. This free movement allowed the gun to be trained at an angle to the side of the ship and still have effective recoil restraint.
