The Wood Carving History of the Town
Carved from three trees by Eddie Freeman from Ross these unusual sculptures depict the history of the town
Carved 4 little erasers last night... I used four 10 cents erasers instead of the expensive carving block.
Also came up with this card design which i promptly 'manufactured' and gave to my close friends today! :)

Emerging from the void, a yellow-margined moray breaths, each inhale carving the shadow.
Captured tight with a Nikon 105mm and close-up lens,
this is not aggression, but proximity —
the quiet tension of being very close
Two photos blended together of these beautiful carvings which are either side of the North Entrance to Beverley Minster,
Hopi Kachina doll representing "Mudhead" (Koyemsi). Kachina dolls are carved from Cottonwood root, but in this case the head is formed from clay. For more info, see kachina.us/mudhead.htm. For group 2016: one photo each day (30/366)

Inspired by carvings in the choir stalls at the Dom St. Petri in Bremen, Germany, are these hand carved window panels done in 350 year old re-purposed TEAK from old farmhouses in Java and Sulawesi.
Zakopane in the Sierras.
I am the last one to ever call myself a photographer... especially in the company of so many very talented artisans on this site. I am a picture taker, and no more... But... I am quite proud of this particular photo, not only for the work done in preparing this marvelous carving for the Project, but for the result of the photo. No flash used here. Late afternoon light, in fact a setting sun.... bouncing off the snow on the ground. It appears to my untrained eye, that the light is almost emanating from within the wood. No alteration to the color in the shot. The teak is magnificent, and I love the shadows from the natural sunlight. Cropped slightly, but not much.... PR vonB
Profile Of Carving of Native American
Great Spirit Prayer
Great Spirit, Great Spirit, My Grandfather,
All over the earth the faces of living things are all alike. . .
Look upon these faces of children without number
And with children in their arms,
That they may face the winds and
Walk the good road to the day of quiet. . .
There is no death. . .
Only a change of worlds. . .
Only a change of worlds.

Maori carving design is predominantly made up of human figures. Next in importance is the manaia which seems to be also a human figure in most cases.
As with naturalistic figures, grotesque human figures occur both in the round and in relief carving. There are many theories as to why the Maori so distorted the human figure. The simplest explanation is that the carver used his artistic licence to fit his basic design, the human figure, into the space available to him in a satisfying way. Archey points out that the human figure in its natural shape does not satisfactorily fit a broad slab of timber, such as the Maori used in house building.
that's enough write up for me, should anybody being interested in the intriguing world of Maori Carvings :

ODC 25 Sept - 1 Oct: All Things Wooden.
One of several carvings made by my pupils under the instruction of a professional called Jonathon Clunies-Ross.
Some of the parents thought this sort of thing to be rubbish (as it isn't plastic and shiny or Branded) and therefore their children couldn't take it home. So when I retired I collected up those and they decorate my greenhouse.
The pine ones don't seem to get woodworm, like the ones made of Deal/Fir
Adam Milliron popped by the other day to take some shots of our studios & process.
Here, continuing to carve the "COMMUNITY" block, which is currently available for pre-order. More info at this link:

Keshava Temple, Somanathapura, Karnataka, India.
This is an awesome temple with an enormous amount of intricate carvings that seem endless. Subjects of these carvings seem as vast as their sheer numbers. The sculptures ranged from images of peasants to warriors to noblemen. Since it is a Vishnu temple, the nine avatars of Vishnu and the stories from Mahabharata are prominently displayed. It is a perfect place to get lost in time and be proud of our humanity that continuously sought something great!

The Marinid Madrasa, built in the mid 14th century by the "Black Sultan" Abu al-Hassan, in the old city of Salé in Morocco. Madrasas are religious educational institutions complete with small cells upstairs for housing students. The rectangular courtyard of this madrasa consists of elaborately carved galleries supported by zellij-tiled columns surrounding a central fountain. This is one of the lateral gallery walls (the long walls to either side as you are facing the wall with the mihrab niche). The Marinid fashion for "décor couvrant" can be seen in the intricate stucco and cedar wood carvings that leave no space undecorated. On the right, a blind pointed cedar arch surrounds twin blind round outrepassé arches with an epigraphic border. The upper left features blind lambrequin arches atop a carved stucco sebka ("net") motif, with the cursive epigraphic border again separating the main elements. Every available surface is carved with sebka, darj wa ktaf ("step and shoulder"), geometric, and floral designs. Although the decoration is omnipresent, the overall effect is not visually overwhelming or chaotic; the linear borders separating the elements and the contrast between dark cedar and light stucco give a sense of division and balance to the overall design.
