It's Saturday morning, November 1, 2008... the last days of this election campaign, some are feeling worn out and are concerned to say they just can't give anymore... then there is an event like today that was so different, so refreshing and invigorating... Danny Devito, Rhea Perlman and Jon "Bowzer" Bauman toured Southeast Florida venues, encouraging people to vote early for Barack Obama, for people to get out the early vote for Barack Obama and to get out the vote on election day itself for Barack Obama. What was really amazing was that Devito, Perlman and Bowzer ended their events by actually driving people to the polls to vote if they had identified themselves as not having voted yet. So, after leaving the Cocowood Lakes Clubhouse, the carpool rock-n-rolled all the way to the early voting polls at the Public Library on Hagan Ranch Road in Delray Beach.
Standing at 4' 1", Danny DeVito is ten feet tall in my book. He is an actor, director and producer, that we all may best know him from his character, Louie De Palma, on the TV series, "Taxi". You've also seen him in wonderful films like, "Romancing the Stone", "The Jewel of the Nile", "Ruthless People", "Throw Mama From the Train", "War of the Roses", "Other People's Money", "Tin Men", "Twins", "Junior", "Batman Returns", "Renaissance Man", "The Rainmaker", "The Big Kahuna" and his appearnaces on Saturday Night Live. Right now Danny plays the character Frank Reynolds, in the hysterical sitcom "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" on FX which once you take a look at, you'll have so much fun that you'll be hooked. Danny DeVito is also an outspoken Democrat and supporter of the OneVoice Movement, a non-profit organization that strives to empower moderate Israelis and Palestinians to take a more assertive role in resolving their conflict.
Rhea Perlman, an active and outspoken Democrat, has received ten Emmy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series "Cheers", winning the Emmy four times. She starred in the sitcom "Pearl" and was featured in the TV drama "Kate Brasher". Rhea played Jacqueline Kennedy in the TV film "How to Marry a Billionaire: A Christmas Tale", the character Honey in the hilarious film "Canadian Bacon", the grumpy shopkeeper in "Packin It In" and she also played opposite her real-life husband Danny DeVito in the film "Matilda". Right now you can see Rhea Perlman in the role of Bertha in the West End of London, in the comedy "Boeing Boeing".
Jon "Bowzer" Bauman was a recognizable member of the group Sha Na Na, singing barritone as he taunted the audiences while flexing his muscles. Bauman currently tours extensively with his group, Bowzer and the Stingrays, performing at fairs, amusement parks, cruise ships and conventions all over the world. They currently headline "Bowzer's Ultimate Doo-Wop Party."
Talk about inspirational... this event was so out of the ordinary and so special because these incredible celebrities took so much of their time and made so much of an effort to convince undecided voters to get up and go with them to the polls and cast their vote for Barack Obama.

THE PERKS OF DRIVING A NEAR-ZERO-EMISSION CAR: Carpool lane for solo drivers on natural gas
HUSBAND, WIFE COMMUTERS SAY IT 'MAKES TOTAL SENSE'
By Matt Nauman
Stickers are in the mail to allow solo drivers in hybrids to use carpool lanes, the DMV says. When they join carpoolers, hybrid owners will find Gretchen King and Dan Ryan are already there.
The wife and husband who live in Redwood Estates both drive a Honda Civic GX, a car powered by natural gas that's allowed in the carpool lane with only one person in the car.
As she drives each day from the Santa Cruz Mountains to her job at a high-tech company in Mountain View, King asks herself: ``How come I don't see more of these cars? If you're commuting every day during commute hours, in an urban area, it makes total sense to me.''
What some would see as impediments to driving a natural-gas vehicle don't bother King and Ryan, who works for the city of Palo Alto.
Yes, their Civic GX models cost more than gas-burning Civics.
And, yes, they have to plan their trips because the cars have about a 220-mile range and only about two dozen open-to-the public fueling stations exist in the greater Bay Area.
But the cars work perfectly for their commute schedules, and
they love doing something positive for the environment -- and getting to drive solo in the carpool lane, of course.
``It's weird, but I felt guilty,'' King said. ``Here we paid $20,000 for a car, yet you feel guilty driving in the carpool lane as a solo driver even though it has got this green engine. Now I'm past that.''
Ryan said the couple once thought about getting an electric car, but that didn't seem practical considering their home in the mountains.
So he started researching natural-gas cars. They're popular with government fleets, taxi companies and the like, but haven't caught on in a big way with consumers. Toyota, Ford and Chrysler all once sold vehicles in the United States powered by natural gas. Now, only Honda and General Motors do.
Last year, Ryan heard that San Francisco Honda had bought
about a dozen used natural-gas Civics. He tried one, and bought one in August 2004, but that's not the whole story.
The dealership let him test-drive one on a business trip to Sacramento. ``It was a nightmare,'' he said, laughing at the memory.
He went equipped with a map of filling stations, but a buddy persuaded him to go to Tahoe after the work day, Ryan said. About 11 p.m., he was back in Sacramento and needed a refill. The first stop, at a UPS facility, had a broken phone line so the operator couldn't authorize the pump to operate. At a second stop, in Davis,
the pump was broken.
``Are you kidding me?'' Ryan remembers thinking. ``What are the odds?''
So he wound up staying in a hotel in Davis. The next morning, a very apologetic person at PG&E -- the utility lets consumers and fleet
customers buy gas at its facilities -- gave him a free tankful.
Despite that -- and Ryan and King say that is the only time they've had trouble getting fuel -- Ryan loved being able to drive in the carpool lane, and that convinced him to buy a Civic GX.
King drove the car and loved its carpool-lane access, too, so it became her car.
In April, Ryan bought another Civic GX, a new 2004 model. That one is white, but he painted a green, white and orange Irish flag on its roof
and added a flame emblem to the stickers on the rear quarter panels that let authorities know of its carpool-lane access.
Only once has King been stopped by the police for driving alone in the carpool lane. She explained it all to the officer, who wasn't aware of
the access allowed vehicles burning compressed natural gas.
According to Honda, the advent of rapidly rising gasoline prices is causing some consumers to find out about the Civic GX.
The company has sold 500 to 1,000 of the cars every year since it went on sale in 1998, said Steve Ellis, American Honda's manager of
alternative-fuel and fuel-cell-vehicle marketing.
Honda has just begun a marketing effort to increase sales of the cars to consumers. Much of the campaign centers around Phill, a homerefueling unit that can be connected to a homeowner's natural-gas line. It's now available through 17 Honda dealers in California, including Honda of Stevens Creek in San Jose. Honda also markets three hybrid models, but Ellis said the natural-gas Civic is a cleaner car. ``When you hear the term near-zero-emission vehicle, this is it.''
Natural gas is ``a vast North American resource,'' Ellis said. About 95 percent of all natural gas used in North America comes from domestic sources, he said. The vehicle also qualifies for a federal tax deduction.
Public utilities, like PG&E, and private companies offer fueling stations. And, recently, natural gas has become cheaper than gasoline.
Ryan said he and King are paying $1.84 for the equivalent of a gallon of gasoline at PG&E and $1.94 a gallon from Pinnacle, a private supplier. This week, AAA of Northern California reported that a gallon of regular unleaded gas is selling for $2.78 in the San Jose area.
There are some issues to consider, the couple said. First, the Civic GX costs more than the gasoline version. The cheapest gas-burning 2005 Civic DX sedan is $13,775. The most expensive version costs slightly more than $20,000. The natural-gas GX is $21,425 to $22,275.
The hybrid Civic is $20,415 to $21,565.
Getting fuel can require some planning. Ryan and King know the locations of most of the stations in the South Bay and on the Peninsula. The California Natural Gas Vehicle Coalition's Web site (www.cngvc.org) has maps and station hours. Brian Stokes, manager of PG&E's Clean Air Transportation Program, described the natural-gas transportation infrastructure as ``skeletal,'' but improving.
Perhaps 10,000 to 15,000 natural-gas vehicles are in service in Northern California, he said. PG&E has about 1,000 customers who get fuel
from their service facilities.
The utility itself has 900 natural-gas vehicles in its 13,000-unit fleet, including more than 100 Civic GX models. Stokes said vehicle quality has been outstanding. ``The engine will run and run.''
A family makes their way between the hundreds of floating houses on Tonle Sap. The entire village moves back and forth by several kilometers ever year as the lake rises and falls with the seasons. This particular father has just picked up his children from school and is heading back home for the evening. The father paddles in back using the help of his daughter to guide the craft back home again. Family structures in Cambodia are almost universally in disarray. Almost every family lost a loved one during the tyranny of the Khmer Rouge. Younger families have to fear the plague of landmines as most of the country has not yet been de-mined. Ironically a life on a lake might keep this family safer than a life spent living on land despite the risk of drowning. (Photo by Scott Edwards)
this puppy. he drove carpool with me for 2.5 hours this afternoon, and in the process met a police officer, a large man in a hoodie and a cap, an elderly man with a scraggly beard and a cane, a nursing home nurse, a man in a wheelchair, two rabbis, lucy's entire hebrew school class, and various others. he rode in an elevator, sat in my lap for 20 minutes during a meeting, pooped on the lawn outside of my grandmother's nursing home, and entertained the carpool. then, he slept. right there in that spot once we got home. now, he's being dragged out for a walk by his people. not me, i'm setting the table for pulled buffalo chicken, baked potatoes, and roasted carrots. gingersnaps for dessert.
i've been out almost all day. had some productive meetings, and one productive phone call. am wearing my favorite jeans. it's 48 degrees here, and the sun was warming. all in all, an excellent day.

January 2010 – Tying rebar at the new Wapato Creek Bridge.
Work started in August 2009 on this project to extend the Puget Sound HOV system into Pierce County. Crews are widening the freeway in the median to accommodate HOV lanes, or carpool lanes, in both directions of I-5 from Port of Tacoma Road to the King County line.

August 2010 - WSDOT has started paving new carpool lanes on I-5 that will help ease congestion this fall in Pierce County.
The stimulus-funded construction project is 70 percent complete and is on schedule and on budget. Since the project began in August 2009, crews have completed widening in the median and outside shoulders, built new I-5 bridges and installed high-performance barrier in the median.
The new HOV lanes are scheduled to open to traffic in October.
Cold rainy morning on my way to work. The sun glasses don't really make things darker as they're polarized lenses, so they actually bring out the details. It's like wearing an Unsharp Mask realt-time filter.
