Carousels have been around for centuries with the first known use for cavalry training in the Middle East in the 12th century. The first non machine-powered carousels had stationary figures for riding. The advent of steam power allowed for more creative overhead crank mechanisms for up and down or galloping movement of the figures. The Golden Age of carousels in this country came between the 1890s and 1920s when they were a popular amusement ride. The very first ones were steam powered driven by a steam engine located at a small distance from the ride and attached by a long conveyer belt. The distance served to cut down on the smoke and soot from fueling the steam engine. The first permanent carousel located near Pittsfield was steam driven and operated in Berkshire Park.
