Today I had the opportunity to talk and counsel an old friend through career paths in their life- where they were going and what they wanted to do (which was actually what I get to do as a career). It gave me the opportunity to re-think and re-trace the steps that I took to get to where I am now, and often that opens cans of good and bad memories.

I absolutely, absolutely, hands-down love my company and love the job that I get to do for them. I love the people that I get to work for and work with, and if I am blessed enough to do this until the day that I retire then I will be the happiest person alive… but it wasn’t always this easy or this enjoyable.

I’ve worked with some great and some not so great people like I’m sure we all have. The Director that brought me up here to Dallas was a wonderful person to know, but a very, very difficult person to work for. They carry a reputation throughout the organization for being one of the hardest people to work for, and though I learned a lot of things from that person, more than I ever thought I would- it came at a price.

The price literally was nearly my sanity and my life. There were days where I felt cornered and trapped into this position, and there didn’t seem a way out. Every moment of my being was a ball of stress, and I was blessed to find pockets and moments of reprieve- God it was such a horrible stressful life to live and I still get sickened just remembering those times… but this soundtrack was one of those moments of reprieve.

This is one of the most beautiful soundtracks I’ve discovered. I was turned onto it years ago and used to journal to it over and over. It is beautiful, uplifting, haunting, and sad. But in the end… it is hopeful and brought me so much healing. There is one track that I used to play over and over in those stressful days- it would bring a moment of joy and sun into my day, and I remember how much I just wanted to be happy and not stressed- and that song brought that to me.

Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing, even the worst of the worst, because I learned from them and it makes me appreciate everything I now have and get to do. A career path takes an investment of time and energy- and it’s never going to be easy… but then no journey worth taking is every going to be easy!!

Sodalite is the deep blue mineral in these rocks. It is quite rare, used mainly as an ornamental stone and in jewellery. This locality in Bancroft produces some of the finest specimens of sodalite in the world.

But it is this young lady, seen here and in other pictures of this set, that I want to introduce. Her name is Moire Wadleigh; she was 21 years old and an undergraduate geology student at Carleton University in Ottawa when this picture was taken in June of 1979. Moire was my assistant during that summer. And what a great assistant she was; hard working, meticulous, enthusiastic, full of life and with a great sense of humour.

One day she asked me what I thought could be a good career path for her. In the late 1970's, the word "environment" was just becoming fashionable as a subject that mankind should be concerned about and I suggested that Environmental Geochemistry could provide her with an interesting and challenging future. She went on to do a Masters in environmental geochemistry at the University of Ottawa and a Ph.D. at McMaster University in Hamilton, specializing in stable isotopes, and continued her career as a professor of Environmental Sciences at Memorial University in St. John's Newfoundland. She was well underway to becoming a brilliant star in her field when it all came to a premature end with her untimely death in November 2004, the sad outcome of a lengthy illness. She was 47. I was profoundly distressed by this loss of a dear friend and former colleague. To her memory, I would like to dedicate two albums of photographs, one on Melville Peninsula and the other on Baffin Island where we worked together in 1978 and 1979 respectively.

This was back in the Internet hey day, just before the second crash. Yes, there was one before that. A coworker and I wrote a quiz for CareerPath.com and it made the news in Salon Magazine. It also made the Wall Street Journal. Knowing it would happen, we took it down when LucasFilm wrote us a cease and desist.
