… in the late Winter afternoon light. On the jetty is Cadwaladers, Cardiff’s most popular ice cream parlour. The brick building in the background is the Victorian Pierhead Centre, masking most of the sleek Contemporary Senedd Building, home of the Welsh Parliament.

Opened in November 2004 - just 33 months after construction had begun - the Millennium Centre is an imposing structure faced with metal, glass and Welsh slate.

A major venue for the performing arts, the centre houses the 1,900-seat Donald Gordon Theatre, the Weston Studio, rehearsals studios and several spaces to eat, drink, relax and watch free entertainment.

With the life of Transport for Wales’ class 150 Sprinters now almost at an end, this shot catches unit 150254 gracing Cardiff Central's platform 6 with the 7.41pm service to Rhymney (2R52) one Monday evening last October. A few late-travelling commuters are waiting to board.

Cardiff Walks. The Scott Monument in Roath Park Lake, Cardiff, commemorating Captain R F Scott, who sailed from Cardiff on his way to the Antarctic on an ill-fated expedition to reach the South Pole. The ship for the expedition that started in 1910 and ended in tragedy in March 2012 was in the 'Terra Nova', although the wind vane on top of the tower is in the shape of the 'Discovery', the ship used on Scott's voyages in 1901-1904.

This photo was taken at about 2040 (as the clock shows) on 3 August 2021, not long before sunset.

Roath Park, Cardiff, 31 January and 3 February 2021. A black-headed gull in its winter guise stands at the edge of the lake in the hope of a piece of bread or other offering from one of the many people who stroll around.

Cardiff Bay is a redeveloped waterfront area which is the former Cardiff docks.

In the early 20th century Cardiff was one of the largest coal exporting ports in the world. It was also home at that time to a great mix of some 50 different nationalities from around the world until the coal industry fell into steep decline.

The church building in this image is known as the Norwegian Church. A lutheran church, it was originally built in 1868 by the Norwegian Seaman's Mission as a spiritual home for the thousands of Scandinavian sailors who worked in Cardiff during its coal exporting boom times.

The church has a connection to the famous author Roald Dahl who was born in Cardiff to Norwegian parents, he was baptised in the Norwegian Church in 1869. The church is now an Arts Centre and Cafe Bar.

Cardiff is the capital city of Wales and located in southeast Wales on the coast of the Bristol Channel.

Roath Park, Cardiff, 31 January and 3 February 2021. This is a black-headed gull, named as such for its summer plumage, but here it is 'dressed' for winter. The forks of its black tail look rather odd from this angle.
